How to pass the Emote Threshold (Dynamic Heads)

Ever wanted to publish a head to the catalog, only to be stopped by an error like this?

For weeks, this error ruined my plans. I had assigned all the bones, and the face moves as it should. I tried everything to fix this, and just now found out why it this number is so low.

The Head in question

The head I wanted to upload was this anime-styled head. I mapped many of the FACS poses, and yet it couldn’t be verified. FACS Poses Reference | Documentation - Roblox Creator Hub

What DOESN'T affect it

Here’s what I tried that DIDN’T work:

  • Adding more FACS poses
  • Moving the bones more (it CAN sometimes work; it depends on the head. In my case, moving the bones more would move the face oddly.
  • Adding a texture (while it DOES relate to the solution, it’s not the sole helper here.) Dynamic Head Did not Pass Threshold
The Solution

To find how to beat the system, we first must understand how the verification process works.

  1. When uploading a head, it first looks for the 17 Basic FACS poses.
  2. Once it has those, when verifying for upload, the system takes multiple screenshots of the head. The final two pictures determine if the head passes the emote test.

  3. The system then compares the differences in colors of pixels on the image. The more pixels that are different, the higher the emote threshold is.

That being said, in order to pass the emote threshold test, the colors between the two poses must change more. I discovered this by testing the same head with a marbled texture, and that verified successfully. (Forgive the horrifying nature of it.)

To improve your threshold, add shading to your texture, as well as different colors (ie. eyes & mouth.)

Adding a texture to a head can be the difference between a head’s FAC poses validating or not. Thank you for explaining this so concisely and well formatted.

Again if you are having problems with a dynamic head not changing enough when emoting, try adding a texture!

Wow, that’s a ridiculous way to decide whether or not you’ve passed the threshold. Thanks, now I know what the issue with my head was
