Important questions about building on Roblox

I think the dev forum is definitely the right place for my billion dollar questions. It is worth a billion dollars because over the course of my years of developing I would say it is the most secretive and gatekept topic I have ever seen maybe even in the course of my entire life. Not just on Roblox but Roblox Staff themselves don’t even provide enough tutorials for this. So here it is.

  1. Where do you learn how to build maps?

  2. How do you learn how to build maps?

  3. Which platform do most builders for Roblox games build on? Blender? Roblox? Paid Software?

  4. Can anyone provide details for my example that I am about to use?

Example Map: “Industrial Complex”

How would you construct all of these parts in Roblox? Is it even possible to make a map with this level of detail?

Thank you anyone who decides to contribute to this topic. It will help everyone out there who wants to learn this.

Nah, how to market a game has to be more gatekept lol.

Experienced Roblox builders learn how to build maps from their own experience and do research on the topic of map design. For me, I just practiced and practiced.

Similar to my above response, but there are a few topics on the Developer Forum regarding map design that can help you.

How to Design a Map

How to Design a House

How to Design a PVP Map

Map Design Guidelines

Most builders will use Roblox Studio for their work, but most experienced ones will use a combination of Studio, Blender, and texturing software like Substance Painter.

I’m not 100% sure on what you mean by this.

It’s definitely possible. When looking at such a complex mess of steel and concrete, it’s important to blockout your work before focusing on the details. This will allow you to get all that complexity out of your mind when you start.

True.

Bro is practicing dark magic

These were about as helpful as talking to the walls. At least the walls were kind enough to spare my brain cells.

Good deal.

I don’t know mate for some people who practice the same dark magic as you it might be… you never actually answered the billion dollar questions. Myself… like a million other people… can’t just learn how to build maps from a visual design of something. Seeing someone actually do it step by step allows me to understand how to do it… and of course coding has so many ways of achieving this… therefore I learned coding relatively easily. I’ve been good at coding for years. When it comes to building sophisticated maps… like so many others I want to be able to do it… but there’s no good resources to learn it step by step.

Edit: I honestly think someone with years of building experience on Roblox that knows how to make even just a detailed House and provides everyone a step by step tutorial could easily wake up one day with easy money. Fast money. We’re talking $1000’s off of ad revenue. Has to actually be a really quality tutorial though and made from an already popular yt channel otherwise it probably won’t achieve such numbers.

basically as @Crazedbrick1 said, it’s quite literally just raw practice.

it helps to see stuff from different perspectives and on how others do it, a great resource that I’ve always liked that was recommended to me was Model Creator. I mean this is just an example but even youtubers and like speed-build videos can help.

tbh it’s really not a billion dollar question, nor is it really that gatekept. it’s like when people ask, “what is the secret to learning x skill”. the answer you’ll see for most, if not everything would be practice.

start off simple, build a house or something. then practice that. there’s a ton of topics on the forums on how to get better at building. the best tip i can give is references. if I could repeat references 1,000,000 times to my younger self just to get it in my head, I would.

best of luck :+1:

Yeah like I said I don’t know what planet you live on but I and millions of other people live on a planet where we need step by step instructions on how to complete something otherwise we don’t know where to start. You can’t just start out of thin air. The speed builds are good… always nice that you can slow down videos and try to follow along with it.

I think this is the closest thing you can get to quality tutorials. Thanks for trying your best to help. This topic is far from solved though. I think someone might just end up winning the lottery off of a freaking dev topic. Crazy to think that nobody has really done it yet but yeah once someone makes a slow, non speed build tutorial for a sophisticated map that actually looks incredible I think they will become rich and famous. Pretty logical for me to think that too… there just isn’t much out there on this subject.

yes, you are correct. if i showed you how my builds looked like when i started, it would literally look like an abomination. you start off bad, and always progress and better your skills.

yeah just wanted to say that you’re also right that there isn’t much out there on the subject because to be fair there’s not much to it other than… try, then try again. if you’re talking map design and such then don’t go searching on devforums though.
