Finally. No more unoriginal low quality cash grab garbage.
About time Roblox did something about the low quality games that have plagued the platform for years and gave the platform a bad image
sounds okay for me, i guess. I am not really a fan, but to stop copy games that is ok.
I love the ‘idea’ behind this, but I don’t love ‘this’.
I feel there is too much potential for false positives.
It also feels like just another thing I have to over stress about, making sure my images or text is not too close to someone else’s work.
Its just too restrictive.
Hi all,
Thanks for your questions — we’ve answered some of the most common ones in the body of the post.
Hope this helps!
Hi @ChiefWildin - thanks for your question. None of the images you highlight will face reduced discoverability as they are distinguishable to users. If a creator uses the same thumbnail - that would cause reduced discoverability and they will know from their creator dashboard. We added some FAQs to the post, please take a look. Thanks again.
Thanks for the concise and timely FAQ, this answered all of my concerns. I’m really excited about this change, keep it up.
While this has pros and is with good intentions, I can’t help but be concerned about new experiences not getting seen because of some similar gameplay to something else even though it might be a completely new take on it or different maps etc.
It already is difficult to get noticed, as it is and also another thing I thought of is this kind of thing could lead to your game maybe not being shown due to say like for example I make an actual FPS game based on world War 2 or something but, I don’t actually include imagery/icons/symbols that would be considered bad etc.
Could roblox because it’s ww2 say nope, we won’t push that out.
I say this because I’m wanting to litely remake an old PC ww2 fps game, (not COD) obviously I wouldn’t copy it 1:1 and leave out certain things.
This project is actually something I started back in 2013 when i first joined but stopped in 2016 but now restarted and remaking stuff and want to make
With that said this update while good, it concerns me, because its not just that but other types of games, because its kinda hard to be completely unique on Roblox.
Definitely too restricted, on an already restricted platform.
I appreciate the additional details. It sounds to me like you guys have a good grasp on our concerns here, and I do think that if executed properly this can be a really good thing for everybody (minus the bad actors, but they don’t count anyways lol). I still feel a bit skeptical about “models and human reviews” since asset moderation has shown over the years that it is a difficult thing to avoid false positives with, but I suppose that’s the nature of the problem.
The post says that derivatives and sequels to the creator’s own works are fine, so since these all appear to be from the same group based on your screenshot, they shouldn’t be affected.
im willing to bet the system isnt as naive as your portraying,
and while it is a valid concern if that weren’t true, id also argue its not impossible for FPS games to use different icons, in your own example rivals stands out visually for being an evolution of the ‘first person perspective’ icons and Energy assault stands out visually for having an older style icon in a ‘3rd person perspective’
What a great feature, my game Pirate Tycoon doesn’t have the warning on the overview page and yet you killed it from 50+ concurrent players down to 4 overnight… Yippie!!
Hope this doesn’t impact smaller creators like myself negatively, especially since I haven’t even released my game.
So we can, in fact, patent thumbnails, titles, descriptions and placefiles. As long as we are the first.
If Steam doesn’t need this, surely Roblox doesn’t either. I don’t trust this system.
Not a solution to all the quality issues present on ROBLOX but this is a good start.
If you search up basically any game you will see there are a ton of bots that scrape and reupload game thumbnails/descriptions with a teleport to some ultra-low-quality copy-and-paste obby or tycoon.
Ideally they’d just ban these people outright from the platform. They contribute nothing and need to go. But it’s understandable that they may use alts hiding behind VPNs to dodge moderation efforts, with plausible deniability in that we can’t prove the person all the obby money is being funneled to is the same person creating all of these fake games.
Honestly if done right this is a good change. It’s actually interesting to see Roblox start to care a little bit about the quality of their platform. Let’s continue waiting to see if they improve the fundamental lack of fidelity of the engine.
