That’s not the thing, it’s that we are limited by 60 being the max range. This post is about raising that limit to 240.
Thank you for trying to help tough.

They are trying to suppress a feature that everybody wants, just because Roblox Engineers refuse to add this doesn’t mean this topic is “no longer relevant”.
Yeah roblox really needs to invest in the light range. For an example, in my game some things need to have far light distances. but sadly roblox has the light limitation.
I don’t know how this hasn’t been added yet tbh…
This happened to me before, Necrobumping feedbackers are just looking to punish people for some reason. I only trust hakai and kazumi for making valid feedback messages. The best part is that if you disagree with action taken, Hakai will actually respond to you about it and possibly get it sorted.
If the post is really long and relevant to the topic, I’d actually appeal it and see what they say (with roblox support, not devforum mods) out of spite.
I know a lot of people would have a heart attack scrolling through this list of feature requests…
https://devforum.roblox.com/t/whats-a-feature-you-want-added-to-roblox/2622128/97?u=timefrenzied
I’d rather they say “yeah we’re not doing this,” or “we are looking into this internally,” or even “this can happen, but we don’t know when,” EVEN “f your idea this sucks!!!” It could take 10 years for all I care, but no response at all? Really? There’s no way they haven’t seen atleast one of these.
Roblox engineers definitely did not forget about this, but the fact “New Light Grid” being postponed to 2025 doesnt sound like a good sign, esp bc there’s no good estimate
If this does not improve light range, performance and everything, I don’t know what will.
Infact, I’m also struggling from lighting cutoff past around 620 studs. This ruins immersion for a game about driving a highway at night. I know this is most likely Future → Voxel transition (which gets clear at lower graphics quality), but its not very nice when all the light information disappears past 620 studs. I’ll include the PointLight spam I have to use to extend lights, and this further reduces immersion.
This post is still relevant up to this date, even though it got picked up by staff at least more than once. It shows how demanded this feature is by developers. There are some changes to the lighting being done with each update, but no idea if this is part of new light grid.
I understand the difficulties of this change, but its also about time to do something about it. We can’t just sit back and keep using old technologies.
a dev has given us a q&a on the new unified lighting:
Q: When will extended light ranges and attenuation be available? A: These two features will come later this year after the full release of Unified Lighting.
This is great to hear, range limits increasing will come later this year!!!
only took them like a decade lmao
knowing roblox, theyll probably increase it by only 10 and try to justify locking it behind an ID-wall by saying you could create inappropriate patterns with it. after what they did with editable images/meshes i wont get my hopes up until its fully released
wth are you on about?? making issues out of nothing, it’s an issue with the voxel lighting implementation right now
its a conspiracy. roblox has a supernatural ability to disappoint everyone by announcing something that people want, only for it to be extremely limited / underwhelming. like the editable meshes for example, everyone loved this update until they made a limit of 8 meshes + you need to forfeit your ID to them to just use it because people could create inappropriate meshes or images. because roblox is all about limitations, they will probably only increase the max light range by a useless margin and because technically if you arrange spotlights in the right way, you could spell bad words out of it. since roblox wants every excuse they can to harvest as much of your data as they can they will make you verify your ID just to increase the range of a spotlight from 60 to a new maximum of 70.
been following this post for years now… 4 entirely different games have had areas of the map reworked/rebuilt once we realized the light limitations. its so stupidly simple its frustrating. im never letting go of this thread. nearly 500 posts on here and basically nothing from Roblox aside from trying to deny people from posting about it by saying its irreverent…(i just found out about the Q&A but still, 7 years???) this is so disappointing. i hope that every time i get a notification from this thread that its someone from the dev team shedding any light(no pun intended) onto this topic, and every time im met with nothing but disappointment.
I was gonna say something to this but I could not think of anything to say that would reflect my frustration.
Now that it’s confirmed that increased light ranges is on Roblox’s roadmap for lighting improvements and most likely is coming at late 2025, I hope that the increased light ranges won’t be too low, would appear smoothly, and with no major performance degradation. It’s a pity that we are getting increased light ranges as a priority in favor of the new Voxel Lighting Grid technology being deprioritized, I was looking for both to get at least this year
yeah pretty annoying and limited
The only features so far they have put behind ID verification have been things where it poses a very reasonable risk of being abused by malicious people. Unless you can name some features aside from EditableMesh/Image that it didn’t make sense for them to apply it to?
Bumping this myself too. Its one of the things I desire MOST in Roblox Studio and by far and I see absolutely no reason to keep gatekeeping it from the playerbase. Or in this case, the devbase?
bump… i remember like a year ago to get around this issue i scaled my entire game down to half size and while it did make the light range higher it still looked awful anyways
Bump. it’s been 7+ years and Roblox still hasn’t done anything.
here to bump this topic some more, Its very frustrating to light up an open world game I’m working on and every game I make I have to make a custom lighting chunk rendering system because when you have too many lights the roblox rendering system makes some lights start glitching out, its more processing i have to place on the client which takes a hit in my games performance.
