Introducing Blocked Words: Enhanced Moderation for Safer Communities

Hi Creators,

We’re introducing Blocked Words, a new feature designed to give you greater control over your community spaces. This is a direct result of your valuable feedback, and it’s an important step in our continuous effort to cultivate a more civil and safe environment within Communities. You can learn more about our commitment here.

Blocked Words lets you filter out unwanted words or phrases from your Walls and Forums (Forums are currently in early access, with general availability coming soon!). While Roblox’s Community Standards still apply, this tool helps you tackle specific issues in your community—things like reducing toxicity, catching spam, or simply curating discussions.

You’ll find it under a new Content Moderation section in Community Settings.

How It Works

Blocked Words allows you to set a customizable list of keywords or phrases. Any posts or comments made within your community containing these specified keywords will be automatically hidden or blocked from others.

Community owners and permitted members can add, edit, or remove keywords at any time. Users who post messages containing Blocked Words will still see their own post on Forums (which are in early access), but it will be hidden from the rest of your community; for Walls, those posts are prevented from being posted entirely.

Key Features

Here’s how Blocked Words gives you control:

  • Exact Matching: By default, if you add “fruit,” it will only filter that exact word, not variations like “fruits” or “fruity.”
  • Partial Matching with Asterisks: Use an asterisk (*) for partial matches. For example, noob will hide posts containing words like “noob,” “supernoob,” or “noobmonger.”
  • Bulk Add: You can add up to 50 keywords at once by separating each keyword or phrase with a comma.
  • Capacity: Your active list can contain up to 1,000 keywords at any given time.
  • Permissions: By default, only owners can manage Blocked Words. However, you can grant “View” and “Manage Blocked Words” role permissions to other members.

Important Information

Please keep the following in mind:

  • How Blocked Posts Appear: While users on Forums (early access) will still see their own posts with blocked words, they will be hidden from others. Wall posts containing blocked words will be prevented from being posted entirely.
  • Owners Are Exempt: Your posts won’t be hidden by your own Blocked Words filters, allowing you to communicate rules to your community freely.
  • New Posts Only: This feature applies to new content and doesn’t retroactively filter older posts.
  • Not a Replacement for Roblox’s Filters (and Current Scope): This feature is an additional tool to help you manage your community and applies to new posts on Walls and Forums only. All content will continue to be held to the same content standards as described in our Community Standards.
  • A Direct Tool for Healthy Communities: This feature is designed to directly help you maintain healthy, civil, and on-topic communities.

What’s Next

We are committed to continually enhancing our moderation capabilities to help you maintain healthier, more positive communities. We’re actively exploring additional moderation features to provide you with greater control and flexibility, including new tools like customizable account verification levels for joining communities.

Thank you for your partnership in making Roblox communities safe and thriving!

This is is a great update! Probably a good way blocking “*roblox.com/*” to block all advertisments and ban the people who intentionally bypass it. There should maybe be a seperate report button for users to report content to group moderators aswell

Unless i didn’t read it correctly, i believe only the owner can bypass the filter. People with the “Delete community wall posts” permission should be able to bypass the filter aswell

In my opinion, there should be a toggle for each blocked word/phrase to let the user know or not. Either shadow block their post or not

I’m all for additional moderation tools, this seems like a fantastic addition!

In regards to the “*” wildcard, I know similar moderation tools such as AutoMod on Discord support Regex, are there any plans to support that here? (I think the * deals with most of the use cases that Regex could offer, but I’m curious if this would be available for more specific use cases).

As well, are there any plans to offer more control over the responses that are given out to these moderation rules, for example, blocking a user from posting for X minutes, being able to control when a post just gets blocked outright, or if it is simply hidden from the poster.

All in all, great additions, thank you!

EDIT: Nevermind, apparently we can’t filter anything important because the moderation tool is getting moderated, that’s completely unacceptable.

Fantastic! This is good against scam and spam!

However, is it possible for this feature to function within the experiences themselves? Such as bypasses unrecognized by Roblox moderation at the moment for early solutions?

Plus, will there be a way to know if your post is blocked due to blocked words?

I just tested it and if you try to type a blocked word in a group wall. This warning pops up:

For forum posts it won’t tell you i believe

Is there a chance that this is ever coming to TextChatService?

Does this mean you guys are going to loosen up on what words get censored? I’m kinda sick of normal household words getting hashtagged because your system thinks they’re inappropriate.

glizzy mentioned in official roblox post

(just admit you have bad moderation. we don’t mind)

I guess I sillymaxxed too hard.

Jokes aside, this is going to be really useful for getting rid of spam in group walls. We have our own little spam problem with !apply

EDIT: please dont pass this through the text filter, kinda defeats the point of having a word filter if we cant include words that get filtered by Roblox.

  • Create a group running some sort of scam
  • Block posts that criticize or point out the scam, spam fake compliment posts
  • Never get in trouble

So excited for the same thing that happens on so many different platforms.

Please have moderation training in place to spot these sort of things!

No way I lived to see the official Roblox Developer Relations team say “skibidi,” “glizzy,” and “maxxing.”

Also can I ask why this is moderated if no one will see it and it’s used as a moderation tool??

I am confused… I’m not allowed to ban this phrase? Isn’t this counter-intuitive?

Focus on fixing the current filter. It doesn’t work for people older than 17. We should be treated like adults. It’s insanity that I have to verify my ID only to get censored when I say “Hi”.

Voice filter is a the same way. I get banned for breathing sometimes.

With that being said, could we have an ability to deactivate hyperlinks (except for approved HRs) in communities to prevent stuff like this?

Good addition, still not running a community on this platform for as long as you make it ‘our’ responsibility as it just gives bad actors another vector of attack to moderation troll - that’s just way too much power for integrating forums into the very same space where developers/teams publish their games to, making it VERY attractive for bad actors to game the system.

Edit:
This post here explains why we will never be appropriately equipped to deal with moderation trolls.

Bro what is this. You can’t ban phrases because of moderation is crazy. Why is there moderation at all?

So you give us a filter to ban phrases but at the same time limit the filter to only good words, meaning any words that moderation doesn’t like we can’t filter.

So we are unable to filter some words and the moderation only picks up the bad phrases when trying to filter them, what on earth.

I figure because this custom filter is visible to other users on the platform (i.e. group moderators), it has to go through the general text filter first. Same reason you can’t search on the website for swear words.

If the filter blocks you from adding it though, it should also block all other users from posting it. Should be redundant for you to add it. Keyword “should”.
