the previous logo, which was introduced in 2017 and updated to be monochrome in 2018, uses gill sans, the current logo uses Gotham though
It using gotham font now
Sad they’ll change logos each approximately 1 year.
Using Gotham and Arial in scripts for example through Enum.Font will automatically refer to replacement fonts? And what is the reason for this decision? These fonts are quite popular and there is still a difference between them and similar ones. Gotham and Arial are bolder and simply changing them to others will make a big difference.
Update: I saw the answer to the question about Enum. However, the question is open - why remove them?
How does this Builder Font License apply to on-platform content that’s re-shared off-platform? For example, an experience’s thumbnail or screenshots/video from an experience containing said font.
I’m assuming that this only applies for newly created content, but what about when an experiment’s thumbnail is shared of social media for the purposes of advertising? Should this font only be used in-experience? If this isn’t allowed, I don’t feel that it’s a good idea to allow developers to use it in their experiences in the first place.
As you see here, Gotham and Montserrat are completelly different.
I saw modules for custom fonts anyways.
But yeah, custom fonts would be great.
I feel I have sufficient options that I don’t care about the font deprecation, but I would like to know why they’re being removed - is it the boring “license costs money” reason?
Clearer terms on whether or not you can use Builder for off-platform Roblox experience related marketing material is necessary.
most of my game’s ui relies on gotham and arial. This potentially might break my game.
Yet another change that can ruin many peoples games springing up from out of nowhere with no prompting, just so Roblox can save an extremely small sum of money by not paying licensing fees. Typical. Lemme go over what I think some of the replies in support of this will be like.
- “B-b-but Roblox need the money and they shouldn’t be wasting it on stuff like fonts!!!”
Fonts, while definitely expensive to license, aren’t THAT expensive compared to what Roblox makes and puts into the site and client on a daily basis. Even the most expensive ones. I think we have bigger things to worry about than some words on a screen if this is based purely on cutting costs.
Also, let’s remind ourselves that Roblox are constantly pumping tons of money into features that realistically won’t earn them money at all (e.g. that calling thing they did a few months back). They absolutely have the capital and reasons to keep the old fonts. They just chose not to, for some reason.
- It’s just a font. Why does it matter?
It matters because they’ve been the main choices for so long. People have created entire UI systems that rely on the specific look and style of Gotham and Arial, and removing them will at best slightly ruin the style the game has, and at worst could have the potential to completely bork games visually. I don’t doubt that it’ll happen to at least one game out there.
- I think the fonts look cool, and they don’t impact my games
Cool! I agree, the fonts look nice. But not everyone can say that their games aren’t impacted by this. Even if slightly minor.
There’s no reason to remove the old fonts. If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it. It’s as simple as that.
I recently ported my older experience with hundreds of GUIs to use Gotham. I am not really pleased with this considering the replacement font is nowhere near the similarity of Gotham.
New font? Cool.
People will have to get used to new font (and people won’t like the change ig)
Also, the removal of Gotham and Arial is stupid. Why Roblox wants to remove 2 fonts that are free to use and replace them with skinnier version???
(Roblox needs to give us better features, not the font changes)
Cool… but what’s the point of removing the other fonts, I for one like Ariel font, I guess for any UI I’ll be making it in Photoshop and importing it as an image, that may not be the best but at least I’ll have more freedom
I understand the possibility of licensing issues being the reason behind removing Gotham, but I’m seeking out the chance that FigTree on Google Fonts be uploaded to the platform as it’s replacement.
It’s the closest font I’ve seen to date to Gotham, and I’ve been hoping for it to be used on the platform in the future
Here’s an image I created for comparison reference
I’d be much more fine with this than whatever they decided to choose. It’s at least close to what Gotham is.
While I think this is great, I dislike the fact that we are being forced to change it. Having it be a new font without having to deprecate Arial and Gotham would definitely give some more options. I would be more open to this if there was more customization to the font other than just how thick the text is. But currently, I have mixed feelings about this.
Very informative, thanks for the video
New font, cool, blah blah… BUT SINCE WHEN HAVE WE BEEN ABLE TO INSTALL OTHER FONTS
What was wrong with Gotham and Arial?
