Hello everybody, I hope that you are all well in these strange times.
I’m here to make my introduction, I have been here for about a year actively seeking knowledge but have only felt that now is the right time to introduce myself into the community.
My name is Guy, 31 years of age, from England.
I have a beautiful wife (who’s age she would prefer I didn’t mention) and a son aged 5.
My current full-time occupation is ‘Infanteer’ in the British Army, (This means front line Soldier).
I have spent 11 years, traveling all around the world in strange and exotic locations.
After being a keen MMORPG player over many, many years, old school and new, my son started to play Roblox a few years ago and always wanted me to play with him. As an adult, it was hard for me to get enthusiastic about some of the games he would play. This was until we both discovered World Zero Alpha. It was ‘Alpha’ but already showcased what the Roblox platform was capable of. This stirred some excitement in me.
At the same time as my son and I found out about this amazing game, I was deep into the third year of my self-development journey. I have devoured books upon books about business, Leadership, strategy, money, marketing, and habits.
The question that was most frequently asked in all these books was about ‘Your Passion in life’, and at this point, it was obvious to me that my destiny was not to be a soldier forever.
Go back to January last year, I begin researching, and consuming every bit of content I could get my hands on, books, GDC, researching why the most successful games in the MMORPG category were that way.
This opened my mind up to so much and excited me so much. The passion and energy I had found from this was intoxicating. I knew there and then that I had to make a game and Roblox was the platform I’d use to do it. Whatever it would take, however long it would take, whoever I had to become (Providing I could make it fit with my core values).
That’s when I changed my mindset from just being a Soldier to a part-time game developer as well.
Compared to this, nothing was ever so easy and provided so much enjoyment for me. Being ambushed several times in Afghanistan did not provide me with half of the excitement and genuine enthusiasm that building, learning, and trying to solve problems on the Roblox platform has.
I planed, and my house became awash with about 10 large blue boards with all my beautiful mind style design all over the place. This sent my wife up the wall, as you can imagine.
March time 2020 and the UK is sent into full-time lockdown, for me, this is the opportunity to make the most of the extra time at home. I took full advantage, built a schedule, and got to work.
Months would go by with small amounts of progress here and there, learning all the while a million ways not to do something.
Then @Crythem Rpg kit 2.0 came out. This was an amazing resource for a new developer like myself to learn, use, and grow the kit to make the game of my dreams.
The plans were set and the base of the game was premade, (The Minecraft story inspired that decision).
Over the next few months, I was in and out of work, and every spare second was spent learning, developing, and spending all of my spare money on hiring professionals to help.
If you have got this far then I salute you. That leads me to now, the game is out in its Alpha state.
I read this book recently called, ‘The lean startup’ and it went in-depth about why you should release the Alpha state in its raw form and then build the community from there. So that is exactly what I’m doing. Slow, steady, and methodically advertising, engaging with the small community I’ve amassed since the 26th of December 2020.
In what was possibly the worse year of many lives, I have managed to have the best year of my life.
There are 10,000 hours more work to do to make this a game that is worth people spending money on
and about a couple of thousand worth of investment left so that we can achieve the full, multi-platform release but I will never stop until I am a full-time game developer with a small team who are much smarter than me.
That’s my story, thanks for taking the time to read about my absolute joy. Thank you to Roblox for making a game engine with such usability that empowers a person like me to make a go of making my passion a realistic means of earning a living.
Hope you all have the best year and some exciting updates coming to the engine this year.
Oh, and I’d love for you to test my game and let me know any bugs or just wish to support.
