Guys, please help me out and give me your opinions on this. Thank you very much.
Backstory: For about 1-2 months, I have been learning the basics of scripting. After finishing Alvinblox’s tutorial on beginner’s scripting I’m gonna watch thedevking’s scripting tutorials and understand all basics and advanced scripting concepts. However, I decided that I want to learn more aspects to development besides scripting. I wanted to learn building. That’s when I started asking some developers on what they used to build (I also asked them how they learnt to build) some of them said roblox studio, while others suggested blender. After learning a bit about blender, I was in a dilemma. Should I use blender or roblox studio to build, which one should I learn?
That’s when I decided to ask you guys cause most of you are way more experienced than me at building.
Here are some questions I hope you can answer:
Should I use blender or roblox studio? (May you also suggest some tutorials)
Are there other alternatives that I should use? (Like Maya)
What is so good about blender that Roblox studio doesn’t have?
That’s all. Sorry for the long lines of words. I really want to know the best option out there. Thank you once again.
Blender is great if you want to make really detailed builds, but you need a lot of time and dedication to do so. I personally don’t know how to use Blender, but I have a friend who makes beautiful builds with them and he often says that Blender builds are some of the most time-consuming things that he has ever done. Remember that importing meshes from Blender also takes time and sizing them also takes time, though it may seem negligible compared to the total time you would spend on actually sculpting the object.
Roblox’s own CSG is great for lower-poly builds since it’s both less complicated and you can do them on the spot, meaning sizing and positioning etc is much easier. Only disadvantages are that it will absolutely screw up unions that consist of many parts (just try to union 50 cylinders together and you’ll get what I mean; Studio either crashes or you get an extremely deformed thing) and that when compared to Blender, they are certainly much less detailed.
If you want to make something that contributes a significant part of your game, such as a main building that your players will very frequently use, you could try to use Blender to make it and its interior. If you’re talking about the trivial details like trees or signboards that don’t matter much to your game, I’d say Roblox CSG works perfectly fine. It all depends on how detailed you want to make something.
Blender takes time to get used to, but its far more advanced than roblox studio. It allows you to make more designs in general such as curvy hairs that you wouldn’t be able to do in roblox studio. Overall, Blender is a very sufficient tool to make 3d models and it’s in a higher era of developing.
Thank you for the detailed response, I will probably try to use both and see which one I like. May I ask how you learnt to use Roblox studio for building? Thanks.
I really reccomend blender, I like to use it and Blender 2.8 made it even better. I didn’t use many other 3D software, but I reccomend Maya for animating. In blender you can make your own meshes and in studio not. But you should learn studio and blender both. Blender is good for low poly and advanced models. I think you should give it a try.
Blender is very good option if you want to make assets for your games. But if you want to make houses or very complex buildings you may try to build with roblox studio first and then go to blender. Like I said if you can also build some small assets like trees or guns for your game with roblox studio but blender with provide a good look to your games.
Have fun building . Good luck
Practice makes perfect I’d say. I’m not 100% proficient at making unions and I typically avoid making many of them at once because a collection of parts may sometimes be more efficient than a huge union. It honestly comes down to tinkering with the features Studio provides and seeing the kind of builds that can come out. Roblox’s CSG involves a lot of trial and error too; reposition your parts until you get them perfectly aligned and you’ll end up with a wonderful model, though it obviously takes time too depending on the complexity of your build.
As for Blender, I can’t really provide any form of testament because I never really used it myself. Feel free to try it out for yourself and see which one suits you better. Of course, have a brief look at tutorials and try to learn the basic functions that each provide, and experiment modelling random things yourself. Both methods take time to learn before you become proficient, and there are plenty of people out there who use both Roblox CSG and Blender equally as proficient.
