If it was legally right, you wouldn’t have things like Digital Millennial Copyright Act…
No, copying maps isn’t allowed. Magnet Simulator was taken down once for this reason.
Legally, if they aren’t using any direct assets, they can get away with it on Roblox afaik. A few Roblox games used recreation of CSGO maps for a long time. If it’s a recreation, it’s bit of a gray area. If it’s 1:1 replica, then I could see some legal trouble possible.
It’s against DMCA if the map is exactly the same, the original creator of the map can file a DMCA complaint form and get your game taken down. It’s not really a Roblox rule, more of an United States law.
I can see that if it’s exact. I still believe it’s a gray area if no direct assets are being used. (aka, up to the staff member reviewing the DMCA claim)
Anyways, best practice would be to make your own map, take inspiration from others, but make enough changes to where it’s unique.
It’s very unlikely he can copy the map brick by brick down to the exact sizes of the parts. However, you can use a map for inspiration and it can look similar, just change it up a bit so it’s different. You wouldn’t want to have the same map anyways, it helps you stand out.
Hello there,
Taking assets from other games is obviously not allowed.
Every game asset, in basically any game, is protected by It’s own individual law.
That’s why copyright exists, so it is basically taking a whole game, then slapping it into a place, and publishing it to Roblox, and maybe even earning money for that.
Contact the game maker individually to get the permission to use their assets on Roblox, or remake the game, by changing basically everything, but keeping the game concept. Just like the owner of Robot64 did for example, which is originally supposed to be Super Mario 64, just with a whole different storyline, and with different characters, textures and maps, and even a different name.
I hope this kind of helped as well.
Sincerely,
CrashFacts
My take on the situation is that you are allowed to take inspiration from another map if you build it on your own and don’t completely take the concept. But if you take the map or make it exactly like the one you’re using as an example, it would most likely not be allowed.
Assuming you don’t rip any assets (meshes, textures) and create everything yourself, then yes, it is allowed. I think there’s a general misconception in this thread, as few people seem to realize that you explicitly said,
“I build it myself, but I basically remake it to look exactly alike or almost similar)”
Okay, thank you. I have decided that I will try to stay away from remaking maps the same way, but I will still get some inspiration from maps in other games.
What gives you the reason to say that? Of course not.
If they don’t give you permission then it counts as copyright infringement. I’m frustrated on how you thought this was allowed.
I think as long as you built it by yourself there wouldn’t be a problem
Stealing ideas is not copyright infringement, so DMCA could not be used here
Only if you have the rights from the creator to do that. Cmon you should know this.
That’s not what he’s asking. He’s asking if it’s ok to recreate maps people have made in the past with his own assets, which is completely fine (legally at least). Give him the benefit of the doubt… I don’t see any harm in modernising classic Roblox maps.
If you read the entire post again, the OP mentions recreating maps from different games. While modernizing Roblox maps may be ok, not everyone in the game dev business will be.
It is legal, but it isn’t really. Many maps (Every FNaF map has been copied into roblox (Not too many details)) also CSGO and no one got in truble.
Its not okay to plagiarize. I don’t think this is even a question.
Ooooh, did someone say “hot topic?”
Rolve has a history of doing the same thing—recreating maps and assets, that is—in games that are clones of Valve’s (I mean, seriously: Rolve as a name is literally the Ro-version of Valve?). To my knowledge, they have also imported entire assets from Valve titles into their own games; there was a medium article on this very subject a while back. Stealing assets directly by importing them is likely against the rules, but seeing how Roblox has actually included Rolve games in events points towards recreation of maps being okay by Roblox’s standards.
That being said, a DMCA takedown request from whichever company made the game you’re borrowing from would basically guarantee your game being taken down.
Based on this, do what you want but be wary of the consequences. It’s no one’s fault if it gets taken down.
Inspiration yes, copying no…
