Is it fair to ban players from your game even if they haven't joined your game yet?

This morning, while I was playing a nice, peaceful game of Tower of Hell, someone joined my server and started spamming very mean-spirited and derogatory messages. I don’t want that person or any other person like that to play my game and make the people who will enjoy my game quit because of the toxic community.

However, if feel like this would be unfair, especially if the player didn’t even join my game yet, and the player might have changed since and realized the actions the player did were dumb and unnecessary. I would also be stopping potential new players from enjoying my game, but I won’t implement this feature until my game has a steady playerbase.

I was thinking about making a blacklist that stores all the player ids that I want to ban from a game, and whenever a player with an id on the blacklist joins, they immediately get kicked.

I will make a poll to see what everyone’s opinion is.

Is is a good idea to ban players from you game even if they haven’t joined it yet?

How will you even know that someone will break the rules first? :joy:

People don’t change when their actions go unpunished. If they will be toxic in tower of hell, then there is no reason why they would decide to not be toxic in your game. Your game’s community won’t be improved by allowing them in, might as well prevent them from causing harm to the community.

The only time I pre-emptively ban someone from my game is if I am the target of toxic behavior in another game while playing online. And in that case, it has to be an extreme action that would prompt me to do so.

I just don’t want that type of behavior spreading in my game and games community (not that I have one).
Otherwise, if it’s something that is “reasonable” then I would just wait until they break the rules and take action then.

I guess it is fair to ban someone if they have a reputation of toxic behavior and spamming and exploiting and such.

You should make it so they get like warnings and a kick from the server and if they repeat it too much then you could ban them.

That wouldn’t be fair to the player who joined your game, especially if they didn’t break any rules you expected.

True but what if scam bots just leave like they do now?

Even though that could cause an account theft, Roblox just purposely bans them.

IMO only for severe actions, or actions that are likely to be repeated across games (eg known/serial exploiter)

It’s also a good idea for groups with multiple interlinked games to crossban like that, due to, well, the games being strongly connected

Some scam bots do not get banned sadly though.

While you are well within your rights to do such a thing, I personally wouldn’t. Not in this sense.

When I’m not working on Notoriety, I find myself playing shooter games such as Arsenal, Phantom Forces etc. These games are no strangers to having toxic players.

Banning someone from my game cause they were toxic to me in another seems rather petty, kinda. I often give them the benefit of a doubt that they were just having a bad day. But the fact this is not happening in my game does not make it my business to deal with in the first place. I’d rather just use Roblox’s report system if they chat reportable content.

Of course, you can still ban them if you want, but if you want my two cents, if you are going to ban someone from your game for toxicity, at least don’t make it permanent. Children and teens can change and mature a lot given enough time. Permabans don’t leave any option for someone to redeem their behavior, and that can actually make them even worse. There are far greater reasons for handing out permabans.

True but a alternative to not perm bans is give them warnings because Children might misunderstand a temp-ban and might think its a perm-ban.

Or just kick them because of the toxcity.

I think this is where Roblox as a website comes in. If he was being toxic and rude and mean or whatever constently or even once. Just Report him dont ban him from your game let Roblox take action.

No!! Don’t ban those players, most of them a completely innocent, and they wouldn’t like not being able to play the game. How can these guys say it’s a good idea to not let a new player join.
Of course you can make a ‘email’ system to all player to have them literally tell you which players are offending the others.

What if they join your game, they bring their friend, their friend meets with another person in that game, they become friends and meet in real life and fall in love, they have a baby who grows up into the scientist who will create the best invention for humanity.

You gotta think about others and not just yourself. If you ban him due to short term feelings of awkwardness you risk altering a timeline that could possibly help humanity.

I doubt this would ever happen. Banning someone beforehand based on toxicity is in my opinion the right choice. The chances of your situation are very very unlikely and with everything going on currently, I am pretty sure this would be encouraged not to take place. Besides that, would you like toxic players running around your game destroying your fanbase, community, and game that took hours of hard work to complete? The points you made were somewhat valid however your situation has a very low likelihood and in the end it is better to help prevent toxicity to spread in your game.

This is roblox not a dating site.

I don’t think it’s really fair to ban someone from your game even though they never played it. You could put some extra surveillance on these players and try finding a fair reason to ban them.
