Is there any way to rename the bones in a rig and retain the use of existing animations?

I made my first rig and didn’t put much care into naming the bones as I was just testing animating it, but it ended up turning out better than I thought and now I think I’m going to use it. Only problem is the bone names are annoying to have to use since I plan to use the same animations for multiple rigs.

When I try to rename the bones, they obviously disappear from the animator and become unusable. I have tried renaming the bones on each keyframe, but this still does not work. Is there any way this can be done? Had a search online but nothing relevant came up.
