Is using (edited) free models a bad idea?

Hello insert your name here,
Is my way way of building good, or not?
I usually do this when I am building:

Use a free model for reference, then I delete the free model

OR

  1. Take a free model off of the toolbox
  2. Scan it for viruses with the Ro-Defender plugin
  3. Edit the parts (alot!) and write my own scripts in it, so it doesn’t look like a free model anymore

Is this a good way to build? From my personal experience I haven’t had any problems with it.

Any feedback would be appreciated!!

If you’re working for someone I highly recommend you don’t just edit the free models, this will most likely result in you getting fired very fast. I personally don’t thing there’s anything wrong with using a free model as a reference as some of them are quiet fantastic, just try not to directly copy them, put your own twist on the builds. Generally you can find better references for builds on the internet. Personally I only use the toolbox for some textures, in the rare event I find a good one I am willing to use, and for sounds. Free models can be convenient references because they are in studio with you but I like to use the internet for my sources so I don’t end up directly copying the reference, you have to challenge yourself in order to get better.

Hi, @DevfourmRealArvin.

If you are working for someone, I suggest doing the first option over the second.

I mean it’s not the best, but it’s okay. The best way of building, in my opinion, is to build completely from imagination or to use a photo reference.

It’s an ok method, but I would suggest using photos for references. As others mentioned, if you are working for someone, do not do the second method.

or simply erase blue data and large amounts of (“fire, sparkles, Unions”) that may contain.
But that does not mean that by taking away everything that it contains it will be yours, it will still belong to the creator of that, it is better to build an exact copy that is built by you.

I personally dont use blender so sometimes I use some meshes that are too hard to make on roblox studio.

But about free models which contain scripts are something way different.
If you are going to use free models allways check for viruses on scripts and check if the creator of the model isnt sketchy and/or strange.

Be careful.

Also about the plugins. They can also be hurtfull so be careful.

Using a model for reference is completely okay considering it saves a lot of time. Even i have done it myself. However the second option is not a great idea especially when you work for someone. Its easy to tell if it’s a free model and the originality and effort can be questioned if you do the second option. In my opinion, the first option is still better, since you yourself spent the effort to do it, and it will make your builds feel more complete. Originality of the work you do is what differentiates you from other people, hence i would personally not do option 2.

Wouldn’t be a problem I think, since you only use the model as inspiration.

.

When working for someone that also pays you I wouldn’t do that. If it is just for your personal projects it is your own choice (sometimes I also do that in personal games).

Not really actually just report who make the free model That have viruses and
I choose number 2

I’d suggest using a photo for reference or using your imagination. Using free models for reference is alright, but I feel like you learn a little more referring to an image.

Hey there!

In this situation, I suggest using free models to help you LEARN how to build/script, but I do not suggest building with them, as sometimes it can still look like a FM. I do believe it is good to take inspiration from the more well-known ones.

Once you’ve learned how to build script a good amount, I would move away from using free models and start to learn on your own, use your own mind.

Anyway, I hope this helps with your question, have a good day!

Hello! When using references, I suggest using a picture as reference rather than someone’s already created model here on roblox. Here is a software I use that I suggest for you : https://www.pureref.com/

i am think that the free models using inside games is preety bad.
if you want to build for game i am think that you should make your assets/models inside blender.
here is tutorials about blender:

Why? Many popular games use free models. It’s not really a bad idea. And on top of that the model is edited. It is ok guess

I have a really old game of mine from 2013…

Free Model Spotlight? Nope! A frickin' BOMB cannon tower!

Free Model Table & Chairs? Nope, revisualized, resized, moved around!

image

Free Model Tree? Nope! Epic Neon Trees That Change Based On Game State!

image

Free Model Campfire? Not anymore!

image

Free Model Light? Well... kinda... but colorchanged!

image

Free Model Lightning Sword? Now it's a lightning bow!

No, I think it’s a great idea! Why reinvent the wheel when you can just polish the edges a little bit, and put your own cool twist on people’s creations! That’s the beauty of Roblox! I can’t make a bomb throwing cannon tower… But that FM spotlight sure did turn into a nice one!

Edit: Also, everybody, do keep in mind that’s what they are there for! It’s not stealing, or bad in any form! People put their creations up to share with others, and let others use them. That’s the whole point! You’re using the Toolbox how it was intended!

I mean free models are not used in popular big games, but if your practicing building and that, the toolbox is there for a reason! You can always improve other peoples creations with your own skills.

I agree with @BCbuds
