Long shadows on large/tall objects have odd rendering glitches up close at a certain distance

My game contains tall mountains and I noticed that long shadows in sunrises & sunsets for tall things like terrain mountains have odd visual artifacts where a large non-antialiased unlit shadow “hole” will appear, snapping to the player’s position as they move around. After you get far enough, the shadow completely vanishes. This can break immersion in games with day & night cycles.

Expected behavior

Usually, the shadow would stay intact with no oddities apart from the usual shadow render distance limit.
