Marking a solution in a Bug Report doesn't close it internally/update the indicator

I’m not sure if this is a bug, or missing feature, or me not waiting long enough for something to happen, but…

Around a month ago, I did a prune of all my bug reports and “Solved” all the ones that never got a response, but stopped occurring regardless. Today, I checked one of those old reports, as they had received a like (I dunno actually, the tab was just open for some reason), and I found this odd quirk:

The post has a “Locked” icon, I’ve set the solution as a message stating it no longer occurs, yet the new-fangled “Bug Report Status Indicator” thingy (how long ago has it been since it was added?) says the report is still “Open”.

This makes me think that somewhere, on some mile-long TODO list of one of the Roblox engine teams, my report is taking up valuable real estate, when there’s no reason for it to be there!

Repro steps:

  • Open a Bug Report by posting to #bug-reports
  • Make a reply and mark it as the solution
  • Wait for the bot to close the thread after 14 days
  • ‘Vóí’lá’!

I would also like to mention that there are cons to closing the report upon the solution being marked, mostly that there have been multiple occasions where I have witnessed someone figure out some idiosyncratic way of avoiding the bug and then… marking the Solution as that workaround, so I suppose that that might also need to be taken into consideration, but also, this specific report has been closed and dead as that one Mars rover for almost a month, so there’s really no reason for it to say it’s “Open”.

EDIT: Okay, well, I typed up an edit to include the downside Hooksmith mentioned, as I realized that in posthaste, then my internet chose the exact moment I clicked the “Save Edit” button to freeze for 5 seconds as I watched the “Hooksmith is typing” thing at the bottom of the post appear and realized I had been seconds too late, but thanks for clarifying anyway

It’s not currently intended to change the status. There are some complications here like:

  • users sometimes mark solution haphazardly, even if issue is not actually solved
  • if user unmarks solution, it is unclear what the status should be in certain cases (e.g. open → solved → open makes sense, but in progress → solved → ??? is less clear depending on context, etc.)

We’ll tackle this some time but for now only internal staff can change the status, not the user themselves.
