New In-game GUI Design

“Streamlined”/“modern” UI design would not work for most ROBLOX games – as pretty as it looks on its own, it doesn’t play well with other UI. The purpose of a default interface is to fit the bill with the majority of the instances it’s used in, so something that would require every game that didn’t have a similar interface to redesign the CoreGui is not a good fit for a default.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the features have to be scrapped, but even after saying that, I don’t think most of them would fit into ROBLOX games well.

  • While a neat concept, notifications in the topbar wouldn’t fit on phone screens, and maybe even tablet screens if the notification text is long enough

  • The switching between stat name and value in the topbar for the leaderboard makes the same mistake CA did with Rome Total War 2’s unit cards. The reason that information is placed there is so it can be seen at a glance without having to spend time looking for your position on the leaderboard. Rotating this information around defeats the purpose of displaying it in the first place – instead of being able to see it at a glance you have to sit there and wait for it to rotate to the item you want to see

  • Hooking up the inventory and leaderboard to be transparent until you hover over them would just be annoying. If I opened the leaderboard it’s because I want to see its contents – I don’t want to have to hover over it too. For the inventory, I want to be able to glance down at the bottom of my screen to see what I have available and then use the number keys to quickly equip tools – not lug my mouse down to the bottom of my screen to show what I can equip when I need it elsewhere on the screen to target enemies. Neither of these can be done in first person either where the mouse is locked to the center of the screen.

  • I like the background color of the frame their name is displayed on being their teamcolor – the big background makes it very easy to see which team players are on, but for games without teams, there would be too much emphasis on the username’s predetermined color when it’s really not important.

  • Completely on board with making the default health bar easier to reference – way too small and hidden right now

Freaked is a great designer, known him for a while. I prefer his website mockups for ROBLOX.

Personally never liked Freaked’s design; they always looked nice in a sort of “wow wouldn’t that be cool in the future” way, but they never appealed in a practical sense.

The key thing I like about this UI is that health bar. The current one is the absolute worst.

I also like what they did with chat, however the font choice is atrocious. E V E R Y N A M E I S S P A C E D O U T . Makes it harder to read/ identify names. I’ll go off on a rant with this; words have an identifiable “face” to them. You don’t need to identify every letter in a word in order to tell what the word is; the shape of the collection of letters can be good enough to hit off those clues.

school, library, flake

Same applies to names

The full caps + spaced bold font completely gets rid of that identity.

the leaderboard is also way too god damn hectic. I’ve come to realize that additional boxes/ rectangles in that general area makes the experience far worse. One big flat semi transparent box and a hover over highlight (maybe semi-highlighting the ones next to the selection) would just feel better.

I also like the idea of notifications appearing in the top bar. I hate it when they overlap stuff in the bottom right

I really like the notifications appearing in the top bar. Great way to help fill up all of the empty space it has.

Eh the top bar is even larger than the current monstrosity

I’d prefer to be able to hide the Gui completely, it is junk, we should be able to make our own coregui.
