Ok so? It would be increased of what, like 3 seconds?
I seen the before and after images. For games that do not use Terrain voxels, you can use ViewportFrames as a workaround, as ViewportFrames can be used to replicate the old Roblox look and as a bonus, renders smoother, because it does not take into account dynamic lighting or skybox information.
Sure, you would have to replicate player models, parts, and animations, but it would help to improve performance, especially if you are rendering the scene only on that frame.
When the new materials are released, will these materials be rendered into ViewportFrames, or will the old material textures be preserved?
Also, is there going to be a property for Terrain called UseLegacyMaterialShaders
? This would also help developers adapt to these changes for Terrain. Mine only uses the Water terrain, so at least I have nothing to worry about.
Why? I think this is a bad choice. It really wouldn’t hurt to put a button to switch back to the legacy terrain.
I, and many others do NOT want this update shoved down our throats.
I’m working on a 2016 Roblox Client Simulation and these texture changes will completely make my Simulation inaccurate. This change will affect other Old Roblox simulations like RETROBLOX or Super Nostalgia Zone.
The new textures should go alongside the legacy textures instead of a flat-out replacement, in my opinion.
A good solution to this would be to have the more optimized textures show up in the game in replacement of the old textures, but just on cellular devices. This would allow for download times to remain the same, even though they did say that they would be adding more materials in the previous post regarding this.
A 2 year old would’ve done a better job.
A lot of the materials look either too clean or too dirty. I don’t want to add a billion more parts with decals or extra textures if I want them to look the way I want.
This update is forcing this awful “specific” artstyle on all games, which is a horrible idea. Old textures looked much more reusable and simple, allowing developers to add extra textures or other tricks if they want to spice them up or improve them a bit.
I was going to mention how it’d also not bother anyone downloading the Roblox App, Roblox Player on PC/Mac, etc. However I felt it wasn’t necessary. I agree with you it’s rather rediculous them being so concerned with an additional few megabytes of download, and also a few extra seconds!
especially too plasticy. roblox is trying to age up the platform, why do all of these look like plastic???
I just like how you ignored the feedback replies just to reply to the neutral ones. You’re all doing such a great job.
In how I see it, this has some okay textures but, most of them are completely terrible! In my defense it seems like ROBLOX has taken a step down for it’s new textures that just don’t fit in with it anymore,
It’s not a great way to start fresh with new texture’s considering the fact that most developer’s dislike this idea. And most builder’s will need to deal with the new change forced upon them so everything would need either replaced by tons of texture’s or someway replace the texture’s in the client.
I’m upset about this in my way, if they were atleast looked back to the old and new, maybe you’ve figured someway to make it better in my opinion.
But seems like it was start from scratch, sorry about this but I’m just disapproving of the terrible texture’s, they don’t even look good, but I guess most builder’s will have to fix everything after this has been implemented.
“modernize”, you say. The new textures don’t even have depth and curves in them like the old ones did, looks like a step back for me.
I think wood and brick is one of the worst case scenarios here

New:
I think the older wood texture looks much more polished and better. Better off adding the new wood as a seperate material.
Several other materials are also way too smooth, like concrete.

While I don’t support them completely replacing the old materials, some of your examples were a little nonsensical. They can easily be remedied by switching the color hue or just choosing another material altogether.
Though, I do understand your frustration on their blatant disregard on old materials and how much work you have to do now. Sorry you have to go through that now…
This is a very poor decision when it comes to removing the original materials. People literally rely on how the original materials work. Nobody wants to redo their entire game’s builds.
Additionally, you cannot modify a game that completely relies on basic materials. Are you expecting us to use textures? Textures can be heavily performant and literally take 5 textures instances to completely cover a base part. Even with these textures, it is not the same as PBR textures. PBR is currently restricted to only meshparts and does not tile despite Roblox claiming they would implement it a few months after June 2020(it’s been a year…)
Lastly, this update sucks. It brings more bad than good. This ruins even more classic games and those that go for a said classic look. I like the idea of new materials, but adding new materials is most definitely not liked. If anything give the developers the ability to make their own materials before releasing this update.
New materials look great. Instead of replacing old ones OR having a legacy mode, the new ones should be seperate from the older ones, or have an extra button in the choose material menu to choose from the old “pallette”, so developers using the older ones can use the new materials alongside it.
Other than that, they look great!
Edit: Instead of having choose older materials, they could just be added to the list, for the same reason.
This also applys with the old ones.
yup, but the new materials put alot more detail into their roughness and normal maps that won’t show with the old lighting settings.
Developers - those who thrive and have brought ROBLOX to the point where it is now:
“Looks good, but we’d desire the option to swap between old and new materials.”
Response:
“afTeR a LOt oF cOnsiDerAtiOn, wE hAve dEciDed tHat wE aRe gOinG tO coMplEteLy rEpLaCe tHe oLd maTeriAls wiTh thE imProVeD oNes”
Could’ve met in the middle here and, rather than keeping the old or solely the new, have the option for both, similar to all different lighting technologies. I believe ‘Compatibility’ replacing ‘Legacy’ was done for a reason…?
PS. the more options, the more variety and freedom you have to build and express yourself when creating a game ahem* ‘experience’.
You’re using the old build. The newer one has a completely new wood texture.
