How many builds have you even looked at?
look at this one for instance
So consider that not everyone can use Blender or cannot afford to hire somebody who can. Where’s the regard for older games and builds that can’t even be updated any longer?
Yes, I agree, CSG is inefficient. The point here is not “is my game efficient”, it is, “can I get visual parity with before the new materials without a ridiculous cost in performance that really shouldn’t be there”.
Have you ever tried caching 500 mb on a pc or phone? Have you ever downloaded half a gigabite? No.
I don’t post here often, but this is definitely something that needs to be addressed. I agree with what seems to be an overwhelming majority of devs. Most issues have already been mentioned by others, but here’s what I think.
A lot of the new materials do look wrong, especially in certain settings. This push for realism makes a lot of places look awful, someone mentioned it looking like gelatine. A lot of materials lose their detail, like concrete for example, not to mention the problems with the new sand or grass. I thought Roblox was all about “powering imagination”. Well, in this case this is quite the opposite. Some old materials had a very specific look to them, that people were using is plenty of ways, often other than intended, sand being a great example, brought up by several people already. The new ones often don’t provide any clear replacements and will damage the “classic roblox” look in many older games, as well as some newer ones that are specifically aiming for that style.
Forced change is a bad step in Roblox-Dev relations. No one likes being forced to do anything, that’s for sure. People who want to keep their current style now need to spend hours or days (or more, depending on the extend) to edit their places so they look right again. Some of them will likely have to redo entire assets because they will be incompatible. A solid amount of devs will be likely to quit, for various reasons related to this, be it the uncertainty of Roblox as a development platform, lack of regard for developer feedback or something else.
No one asked for a complete replacement of old materials. There were plenty of people who wanted new materials to work with, to expand their capabilities. Instead everyone has to suddenly switch to a different set of materials.
I’ve been seeing some posts telling others how their places look better with new materials, despite what they say. In my opinion, it’s the author who knows how things should look in their own creation. They may look to others for feedback, but ultimately how something turns out depends on their idea and how they pictured it in their head.
You cannot assume that I haven’t downloaded more than half a gigabyte. I have downloaded 20 Gigabytes worth of files and finished within half an hour.
The fatal flaw with this update is that parts couldn’t keep their original uses.
If roblox wants to role out this update they must make it so the new materials can for fill their original uses in most cases. Devs are happy as long as the new materials fill their old roles. However this update did not account for that and as such many devs are angry.
Foil is a great example because if pushed to the new version it wouldn’t change old builds in a major manor as it retains all its propitiates. Smooth, wavy and reflective.
Examples of how their attributes have changed
Material,
Old attributes
New attributes.
Concrete,
rough and paintlike while also being concrete.
More realistic, smooth, unable to be used as course paint.
Grass, rough and dense making it viable for many organic uses.
Grass, smooth, fits in better with the terrain.
Slate, Rough while also being organic, like rough tree bark, rocks or flesh.
Smooth, uh? works well with meshs I guess
Granite smooth, polished, elegant floors and otherworldly environments.
Rough, wtf is going on here it’s lost all it’s charm and looks like basic rock (we already have the newer materials for this role, we got like 3 materials that just look like basic rock)
And the list goes on.
ignoring the wack glitch with diamond plate
You can see how the propitiates of diamond plate and plastic remain the same while granite changes
Along with that too many of the new materials share the same propitiates.
Go on I dare you to tell me which rock like material is which, most of them look the same.
Each of these have distinct features which make them special and useful in many many different locations
If you want a successful update it’s going to be need reworked from the ground up using a different design philosophy
Who at roblox looked at these textures and said to themselves “oh yeah this is next level, PUSHED”
You didn’t even wait for the proof before you said there’s not…
Amazing! Every game ive made will now look weird and you guys cant even make some option just to allow people to have the old materials! Thanks roblox.
Adding custom anything is a performance cost because the client has to render that. It’s the same reason why using textures is not a reasonable solution.
I’m not someone who’s actually benchmarked this, so I’ll leave explaining that to the people who know what they’re talking about, but what I do know is that a lot of developers DO agree that it has a performance issue and I have no reason to disbelieve them considering how rarely I see surfaceappearance used anyway.
Even if it did not have a performance cut, it is still EXCLUSIVE to meshparts, rendering it an unviable fix anyway.
An excellent summary of this imminent debacle. It’s a shame it will likely fall on deaf ears where it especially matters.
Almost: I would rather say that the big issue is that a different style is being forced upon us without us opting in, or being able to opt out. It’s the lack of choice in this impactful change, which also feels very odd considering Roblox has a long history of caring about leaving older projects unaffected in all of its updates, except for breaking but necessary changes, like scripting tweaks.
the only reason why we need to change style is because the materials all have entirely new attributes if they remained the same most things would still fit together just fine.
Elaborate on how these materials cannot coexist with the current ones, it is clear from the larger part of the responses of this devforum post that people would prefer to keep the older materials in some way.
That looks so good, I can tell that the materials have improved.
Can someone help me I have no idea how to get theses new things working
I’ll look even better if I mess with the textures and lighting more.
Yeah, I get your point, but I don’t think it would be possible to keep all current uses of all materials no matter the change. Any change of the sort would’ve gotten in the way of some uses we have of materials. Though, I’ll give you that it could’ve been much less brutal.
Everyone is mad because of how they are going to force the materials on all games. People didn’t realize that they wouldn’t have an option to use both the new and old materials and even on the feedback thread, people still explained how it was a bad idea to force it upon developers. But they still did it anyways.
