New Terrain and Parts Built-In Materials - Release Build

These are amazing, greatly welcomed update. Looks like all the angry people used all the textures for the wrong use(s) anyways, excellent update imo! :+1:

Hoping for decoration features on parts, ie. grass, have not been keeping up with this enough so I’m not sure if it’s already planned, haha! Very nice overall. Another thing I think would be cool is the ability to make parts other than neon be able to glow, etc.

I tried this out with my current maps and it’s not too bad, although I do have to make some parts of the map a little darker to resemble their original shade because some materials got much brighter. But that’s okay.

Did yall really listen to the community or just find the Questions that you can Answers? Developers shouldn’t be forced to update their builds, Who careful decision idea, was that to make that?

Just Imagine the pain of what developers have to go throw when they need redo their whole game.

I think we are lucky of getting a month to change our games. Usually Roblox doesn’t do these kinds of things. Unfortunately, Roblox needs to modernize.

Developers are their source of income, without us, the platform doesn’t exist, can’t get players without games. We’re not “lucky” that they gave us a month, it’s the bare minimum they should be doing when they make ANY significant changes.

They should be taking developer feedback into account much more than they already do. Roblox doesn’t -NEED- to modernize, they want to, and even if it did NEED to, maintaining old textures isn’t going to influence install times as much as we’re being lead to believe. We’re talking Kilobytes of file size per texture.

Authoring marketplace content doesn’t make sense either, as it’ll look and act exactly how the publisher intended, regardless of material. We can already cause this… “issue”? With SurfaceAppearance and the older “Texture” object. What difference would a material called “LegacySand” make? None.

If it’s actually going to cause a significant increase in install time, I’d love more information on how they came to this conclusion. But at this time, it feels more like a marketing decision that overrode developer voices, which would be disappointing, but not surprising. I’d love to be wrong on this though.

I’ve updated my post, tell me how to achieve the same leather-looking result with the new textures

The RC Build is a separate Studio to let you get access to the new materials before it releases. When the change rolls out, all you got to do is publish the changes to your live game!

This looks actually awful, not only does this screw over so many games (or should I say…experiences… O.O) and their styles, but the materials look both terrible and don’t match with the other new materials

I still don’t understand why developers can’t opt for legacy materials, even if updated into the new PBR pipeline those materials could stay as true to the old design as possible while we have the new ones to work with and tweak. But at this point you guys will enforce whatever you want and not take developer critiques or requests into play, so… :man_shrugging:t6:

I have a question:

Why is metal SO metallic?

Anyways, not the best, but not so bad :man_shrugging:

ok but still nobody wants this to be a forced change

I agree, this update was just shoved down our throats. It just seems like Roblox doesn’t care, they’re pushing these updates out, trying to modernize the platform. I like that they’re trying, but they’re not listening to us, and making this forced is not a good plan.

Big fan of the new materials, although no backwards compatibility with legacy variants of each material is quite worrisome. I have noticed many developers worried their games style and feel will be ruined because of the forced change and no backwards compatibility.

but what if i want to keep the old materials of parts and terrain even the update rolls out

Nice way to drop the ball.

No way at all to slowly phase them out in favor of the new materials?

Change hurts when you guys are set on removing or replacing things that made this game iconic, like trying to paste over it’s blocky avatars with rhtro, chasing uncanny realism (PBR with little real support), or this new update.

I’m probably wrong in my take on this, but still… making a lot of people dread new materials just does not seem like a nice way to introduce them.

(edit)
I like a few of these textures, which is why it would have been even better to have both old and new.
Not as if load times are already bad enough for my games, few more seconds extra for both wood grains is worth it.

Moment of silence for all the plants using the grass texture or sand texture.

THANK YOU!! I’m so glad you guys actually responded to the community feedback! I don’t really have much to say other than “thank you” a billion times, and I apologize for being so critical.

My previous statements (before this update was going to be optional)

Why can’t we have this permanently after the update comes out? Clearly you have already made (or will make) a system to swap between both sets of materials, so why can’t this just be the normal for Studio?
Here is a before and after of my game I’m working on:

Before

After

What happened to the grass and the dirt walls?

Look how they massacred my boy! How do you spend months reworking textures and produce a DOWNGRADE? I’m sorry if I sound a bit harsh but yikes, that is one ugly looking slate texture.

Pretty much all of the “earthy” textures (i.e. grass and slate) look like they are just slightly dirtier versions of the Plastic material. The new materials don’t even have very good looking reflections! At least the old Slate material actually looked like rocks, while the new one looks like those fake rocks you can buy at gardening stores.

I do have to say though the new Foil material actually looks really nice compared to the old one, but I would still prefer the old one just because the way it looks makes it have so many more uses other than tin foil.

The way the current new materials are textured makes their use cases very limited compared to the old ones. It almost feels like the materials can only be used to depict what they are named after, if that makes sense. For example, with the old materials you would use the Grass material for grass, leaves, and various other foliage; but the new grass just looks like a flat piece of plastic with some scratches on it (which is a common theme with these new materials). The same goes for the Slate material. As said earlier the slate used to look like proper stone that you could use for all sorts of stuff, but now the new texture only looks good in like 1 or 2 scenarios.

Also, don’t even get me started on how the community feedback was “handled.” From what I got from the post, the only person you listened to was @WoodReviewer, and everybody else’s opinions were thrown out the window! What is the point of asking for community feedback when you’re just going to ignore them anyways? If you look in the replies of the previous showcase and this one of the new materials you can clearly see that these new material textures were very poorly received, to put it lightly.

When writing replies to these update posts it feels like we’re talking to a brick wall; what’s the point if nothing gets acknowledged? I would feel a lot less mad (yes, I’m mad about this) if there was just more transparency with this whole thing, and with all the stuff Roblox does in general, because we’re constantly left in the dark about stuff we need to know more about as we’re the people MAKING YOU MONEY.

I feel like the biggest irony in all of this is that with these new materials, Roblox meant to make games feel more realistic, but they just made them feel more like LEGOs than anything! (Imagine this post gets taken down because I compared Roblox to Legos)

I’m sorry if I offended anyone who worked on these textures, as I’m sure you guys have done great work in the past, but these textures should not be forced onto every game in the state they’re in.

You can’t. New materials are forced upon every game.

The way you could do it is get the texture from your Roblox files and download it, then upload it onto Roblox and use a Texture.

“careful consideration”
You clearly ignored everyone’s problems. Do you think its easy for games to just change overnight with the snap of a finger? No, and adjusting takes time. I am disappointed in you. What will it take for you to realize that game that use the current materials will only look good with the current materials? Of course, thats not true for all games however you can’t use that as an excuse to back up well over 10,000 games, forcing them to wait till the custom materials update arrives which will probably take a year.

This wouldn’t work. They’re not standard PBR maps. They are .dds files and they look like this:

Diamond Plate Textures (Legacy)

With all due respect, I encourage you to do some research on these types of things so you avoid the possibility of misinforming others.
