New Terrain and Parts Built-In Materials - Release Build

This isn’t about adapting at this point; I literally have to waste the very precious money I scraped together for my project just to take into account for some update nobody asked for (by that I mean no one wanted it to be forced). I’m insanely upset over this situation right now, and need to rethink all of our short-term plans just to get together a working color palette which suits our game - and some very specific color, mood and texture settings we spent hours discussing are literally no longer possible. Your comment is extremely hurtful to the studios that have spent a long time planning, just to get thrown under the bus.

The moment you commented, I found the textures and realized I was wrong. My mistake lol.

Thanks for listening to my feedback. Overall I feel that the wood and wooden plank textures are the best they’ve ever been. I have noticed that the wooden plank texture is slightly darker than the regular wooden texture.

But with that being said the difference is much less noticeable when the materials are actually used together than before.

Now they looks just slightly off, but still completely usable together.

I want you, the people pushing this update, to look me square in the eye on a voice call and tell me these new materials are an “improvement”. Max graphics, by the way.

No, I’m sorry but I really do not want to go through thousands of parts in builds in a live game to change them to make them look fine with the new materials. I can’t believe this was forced after all the complaints in the first thread. Please, take the complete destruction of visual aesthetics into account, and don’t force the new materials.

I think it’s an improvement. It looks more detailed and textured.

Don’t need to.

Sry, but I had to post this. Yes, its awful that it doesn’t look like a board anymore, but look on the 0.1 milimeter^2 bright side: It looks like a TV displaying a landscape.

(This post was intended as a joke. No disrespect was on purpose)

Because of this update, I’ll need to redo all my previous builds and games. This update will negatively affect more “old styled” games, but improve realistic games.

You and I both know that’s a lie.

I’m not lying though. Realism is a good thing.

Right guys?

If they released these as a separate textures, thats awesome. But who are we kidding? They clearly do not care about us and thats been proven MANY times, I hope i’ll be proven wrong but I highly doubt it.

I’m not joking. If you don’t like the new material, change it to something that looks bettter.

Not always. A little cartoony-ness or less realism goes a long way too, you know.

I agree. The tiling is extremely noticeable on most textures when they’re being used as ground or floor in large/open areas.

Very disappointing news.

…we concluded that supporting the old set of materials behind a setting is not viable.

The truth is that these new materials are simply not good enough to be replacements in their current form - they are not upgrades, they are just different materials.

Here’s an example of the massive difference between just a few materials:

Old:

New:

Mud is now extremely reflective, ground is now plain and blends poorly with grass. There are many other examples of the new materials failing to support how they were used previously, which - if old materials are not available - is not acceptable in my opinion.

The precedent that this update sets is quite disheartening, and truly I can’t imagine I would feel comfortable using any built-in visual aspects of Roblox in the future - am I safe to create a new game with these new terrain and part materials? Or will Roblox decide in 3 years that these too will be changed with no option to revert? What about built-in things like R6 characters? Will they be going too - should I just make only custom characters from now on?

No other professional quality game engine would ever push an update like this - having an entire game’s worth of textures change on a game released on Steam, Epic, etc. without consent of the developer would be completely unheard of.

Also, only one month before this update rolls out to live games? That’s not really acceptable either, considering it was only today that it was confirmed old materials would not be staying. Roblox devs often have a lot of other things going on in their lives, just like anybody else, and in my opinion one month is simply not enough time to assure everyone gets a chance to prepare for the release.

Very upsetting to see after the huge amount of feedback that was given in regards to not replacing old materials.

Realism isn’t bad, but having a platform forcing it upon their developers simply so that they can look more professional is pretty disappointing. Especially since they’re not listening to the thousands of complaints from people with common sense and actually worried about not their own games, but those who aren’t being updated anymore.

I don’t think you understand, this is a FORCED UPDATE that not many people want. Most games are RP games that just don’t want this forced apon us.

I don’t think you see the full story here!

I just checked every single material in the entire build, absolutely nothing looks even close to the desired effect.

I know you’re going to say, “just use textures!” That won’t work either because enough textures in a game will drop the framerate by a very serious amount. I have a 2070 Super and I still get drops on texture-heavy games.

“So just use surfaceappearance!” Meshparts only, rip editing anything I find problems with. Plus, meshparts would break a lot of scripting since Roblox removed meshes being able to hide meshparts.

Why is the water so thick? It looks like jello

Um… I can’t tell if this is a joke. This isn’t something I can fix by just slapping a new material on it. Builds are made with those specific materials in mind, and replacing them isn’t as easy as just choosing a new one.
