This comment aged really well.
But they are adding more built-in materials, perhaps some of thoose new built-in materials are the old ones, or maybe improved versions of the current ones
My game’s aesthetic is completely based off of the old roblox materials, giving the games a certain look! I am new to development, but I am not sure if this is right for me now…
what??? you can’t be serious, the normal map of the new grass material is definitely obviously there.
Except they aren’t yet.
It’s all well and good saying they will add something at some point, but if they are expanding the material library anyway, there is even less of an excuse for them not allowing users the old materials, or waiting to release this update until this is possible.
A toggle will be completely removed eventually. As I’ve said before, importing the existing textures to the new engine is practically a drag and drop job and refusing to do so is significantly disturbing coming from a billion dollar company that won’t let us make our own materials without waiting 1 - 2 years for what will likely be a bugged & laggy system to come along.
All the excuses made thus far to not keep the old materials have made no sense and heavily contradict themselves.
Upon downloading the Beta and looking at several of my games, I am impressed with the textures, however I do NOT feel that they are an appropriate/suitable replacement for the current textures.
Exploring my games with the new textures, I realised how much I depended on the current textures while building. The new textures will seem to force me to update every and anything using textures as: sizing, orientation, style, (and sometimes even coloration) has been changed; ruining the current artistic style my games have.
I strongly feel that the new textures should be alongside the current, and not replace the current. I don’t believe anyone would be frustrated waiting slightly longer for a game to load, if it means seeing the game in its original envisioned and designed state.
In the unlikely case that maintaining both current and new textures is a real, justified problem, I believe the new textures should be postponed; or are changed drastically to respect and maintain the look and feel of the current, while introducing a more realistic look.
I’m not trying to sound harsh in this reply, just giving criticism and my opinion about this approach.
In regards to what was said in this post about the old textures being removed:
Most, if not all of the points stated are invalid.
Most developers are skilled enough, and I doubt there isn’t a way to simplify the process of making this work.
You guys actually endorsed us to give feedback to what textures should be added. Alongside that, there are going to be many more textures introduced as well. By doing that, you made it look as though there would be no problem with adding more and more textures on.
The best way to compensate this is a custom material list. Not like textures, but like actual materials. This would fix up all our problems with this update, and would make both sides happy. Instead, this is being done.
You’ll be ruining every single game out there who is oblivious to this upcoming update. It’ll come right out of left field for them, and will cause a lot of developers to quit, resulting in a catastrophe. This is disappointing, and I would like to see the old materials being kept in the game, even if it means longer loading times.
Much more “challenging?” The horror! The horror!
Well well what to say about this update. I do see where Roblox is going with these new textures but honestly it just to me feel we as developers as not getting any type of say. Yes Roblox owns the site but they are not the ones who it will mess around with and force to have to re texture some of the games.
Why can we not just have all of them or an option to choose; I honestly would rather it take a little longer to load then removing it. Right we may have time to update our games but not egnouth time for some devs who have lots of games which all may be affected.
Honestly some of the new textures in my opion don’t even really work that well in Roblox but that may just be me. Over all I just feel Roblox needs to hear the devs of games more as there where tons of feedback on the last dam post which just feels as completely egnored.
I do think it is a great idea for us to get new textures as we have had the old ones for a long time but still we should have a choose to use them or not.
Roblox ignoring the 1000 replies saying to make it an option, what else was I even expecting from them to be honest.
Ok so? It would be increased of what, like 3 seconds?
I seen the before and after images. For games that do not use Terrain voxels, you can use ViewportFrames as a workaround, as ViewportFrames can be used to replicate the old Roblox look and as a bonus, renders smoother, because it does not take into account dynamic lighting or skybox information.
Sure, you would have to replicate player models, parts, and animations, but it would help to improve performance, especially if you are rendering the scene only on that frame.
When the new materials are released, will these materials be rendered into ViewportFrames, or will the old material textures be preserved?
Also, is there going to be a property for Terrain called UseLegacyMaterialShaders
? This would also help developers adapt to these changes for Terrain. Mine only uses the Water terrain, so at least I have nothing to worry about.
Why? I think this is a bad choice. It really wouldn’t hurt to put a button to switch back to the legacy terrain.
I, and many others do NOT want this update shoved down our throats.
I’m working on a 2016 Roblox Client Simulation and these texture changes will completely make my Simulation inaccurate. This change will affect other Old Roblox simulations like RETROBLOX or Super Nostalgia Zone.
The new textures should go alongside the legacy textures instead of a flat-out replacement, in my opinion.
A good solution to this would be to have the more optimized textures show up in the game in replacement of the old textures, but just on cellular devices. This would allow for download times to remain the same, even though they did say that they would be adding more materials in the previous post regarding this.
A 2 year old would’ve done a better job.
A lot of the materials look either too clean or too dirty. I don’t want to add a billion more parts with decals or extra textures if I want them to look the way I want.
This update is forcing this awful “specific” artstyle on all games, which is a horrible idea. Old textures looked much more reusable and simple, allowing developers to add extra textures or other tricks if they want to spice them up or improve them a bit.
I was going to mention how it’d also not bother anyone downloading the Roblox App, Roblox Player on PC/Mac, etc. However I felt it wasn’t necessary. I agree with you it’s rather rediculous them being so concerned with an additional few megabytes of download, and also a few extra seconds!
especially too plasticy. roblox is trying to age up the platform, why do all of these look like plastic???
