It’s finally here! I have been looking forward to this!
However, some other textures are quite low quality and glitchy.
This is good but still needs a lot of work

Just to add one thing, for those who want to develop with these beta textures but are in need of some more I heavily suggest Texture Haven, as it has saved me a lot of time searching the internet for free textures that look good.
And for those who dislike the new sand I can suggest the “leather white” texture located in the fabrics tab.
(My roblox upload of the decal: Fabric Texture)
They look so different from the old textures. Make the old textures still available to use in parallel to these ones so that games that rely on the look of the old textures to shape the look of their game don’t have their aesthetic destroyed.
You then must be testing it at low settings if its mushy since at high setting they’re very high res and are not mushy.
The key thing they need to do. I have no complaints with any of these as long as this is done.
It won’t, if the new materials need to be explicitly switched on.

Roblox isn’t “breaking” anything. They’re updating the default look and feel of the platform.
Because that’s what Roblox wants the default look and feel of the platform to be?
Nobody is destroying anything.
Guys… Stop complaining…
The reasons your games look bad with the new materials is because your game was made with the old ones. Made FOR the old ones. Look what I managed to cook up!
A developer shouldn’t have to go back and change their entire game because roblox decided it’s better. A comparison someone made is if youtube decided that they were gonna drop support entirely for the .mp4 format, and any existing video uploaded in such a format can only be viewed in 360p. It’s not the developers job to deal with roblox, but rather the inverse.
We can use the Replace tool though. We can replace the terrain with terrain that fits better, and we can also change the color of parts if they look off. But I do agree, its kinda dumb that they changed them so much.
Thats the thing though. You shouldn’t have to change your style at all. another comparison I saw someone else make is if Unreal Engine decided that everyone is forced to use cel shading now. People would be mad, and rightfully so.
Yeah. Also, In this version, there are only the existing materials redone. We are getting like 15 or 20 more. Here is a list of all those materials:
Thatch
Wood Bark
Moss
Carpet
Tile Surface (ceramic)
Marshland (dense/sparse emergent)
Leafy Dirt Ground
Snowy Grass
Jungle Floor
Snowy Rock
Dried Leaf Ground
Gravel Ground
Plains Grass Ground
Stucco Plaster
Cardboard Paper
Painted Metal
Iron (refined)
Diamond
Fur (short hair)
Rubber
Full Grain Leather
Denim
Gives us so much more customization.
It absolutely does, and I cannot wait to get them. However, forcing people to use the new materials is b a d. My solution to this is this. New Terrain and Parts Materials Preview Build! Oh YES! - #241 by Blue_blockhead
But dear god, don’t encourage roblox to force people to change the style and feel of their entire game. Take my starship for example. It’s 200,000 parts currently. To go through and change all the materials to look good with the update, would quite literally require me to redo the entire ship.
How do I get this to work? I downloaded the github file.
I was excited for this but I was hoping they would be seperate to the old materials. Regardless I like the new textures, but I hope that the old ones will still be accessable, since the new ones don’t work in a lot of situations.
It will, because even then, those games cannot be updated or even touched later without switching, judging by how the original post was worded. (Assuming somebody is able to do that.)
I again direct you to the wording Roblox used. It is heavily ambiguous and we can assume it won’t allow new assets to be made using the older materials.
I highly advise you to reconsider what “breaking” means. If you have failed to notice all of the problems these materials have caused, ESPECIALLY in the second response in this thread, then I’m sorry, but you aren’t paying attention. I need to remind you we don’t even have a confirmed option to use the old materials.
So, why are we, as developers, supposed to sit down and take what Roblox wants when they’re supposed to be helping us with our livelihood? Should we have to gracefully accept that Roblox’s new materials would simply ruin our games if this ends up being non-optional? Does what Roblox wants matter to you more than what the majority of the development community wants? Does what Roblox wants matter to you more than the visual integrity of old builds and pre-existing systems that have been set in place for years by their creators?
I’m starting to question if you’re paying attention to the complaints and other posts that people besides yourself have made on this thread. If you had scrolled up, you would see exactly what I’m talking about regarding this destruction.
Something I need to make clear is that Roblox said old experiences could potentially, not definitely keep the old materials enabled, but they never said that you could create new experiences or update existing ones without making the switch to the new materials. Essentially, you can look, but you can’t touch.
I advise you seriously reconsider the rammifications of this update and the damage that it would cause if shipped without being entirely optional. Your mentality here seems too inconsiderate.
EDIT: Okay, I am going to rephrase my reply.
I dislike the people who say “Dude!! This Is ruining my bed made out of sand!!!” etc, and the low-poly game makers especially like dude you guys use plastic for most of your map they almost never change that.
If you want the classic and or cartoony style just set the color brighter, that’s literally how it is now, this isn’t changing studio to make it some magical realistic fairy land.
Just get over the fact your sand bed or your cobblestone cave, which already looked like a path Is being changed, and people complaining about older Roblox games getting ruined, they wont change the inactive games, they even said you have to edit the game for the new textures to even show up.
Just because Roblox released realistic textures doesn’t mean its the end of the world, In my opinion these old materials are holding me down and It would be nice for a change, these clunky materials have been around for years now sure, but It’s time for a change, everything changes.
You fail to consider that some games can’t be updated because their developers left the platform, or how much stuff some people have made with the old materials. Going back and reworking everything to fit the new style would take literally months for some, including myself. Am I just supposed to scrap the past 4 years of work and start over from scratch?
Why should I have to change my entire style according to what Roblox wants it to look like? Isn’t the entire point of the platform to be creative and make something YOU want to make, the way YOU want it done?
They would not be complaining if their creations were not being ruined by it.
You are right, but you’re also rather missing the point. Yes, older games were made with the old materials, for the old materials. This is the problem, if they were to forcibly replace all of the old materials it would ruin over a decade’s worth of builds. For the most part, people aren’t saying the new materials look bad, just that they do not work in the way people want them to anymore, which is a perfectly valid complaint to have. The option to use both the new and old materials is absolutely necessary.
Not sure if this has already been reported, but the new Marble texture has very noticeable seams at the edges of the texture.
The new Corroded Metal material also looks absolutely horrendous. There’s very obvious white outlines around the corrosion, making it look like a badly-designed decal.
