[Now a feature!] Quick Request: Ability to cancel join request to private groups

Long-time edit: This is now a feature in groups! I will not necrobump to add a solution checkmark, just updating an old post to clarify.

This feature request is based on a comment I saw on a recent feature request of mine.

The concept is simple, I don’t know about the execution though. Have a cancel function on the group page so you don’t have to wait to be accepted or denied into a group - you can deny yourself. It’s annoying joining empty abandoned groups, accidentally hitting Join Group or changing your mind about joining a group and not being able to back out. That join request remains until someone with appropriate permissions handles it; in some cases, there are no persons matching that criteria available to handle it, resulting in a permanent pend to the group.

They might have a list/array implementation for join requests for a particular group (alongside individual user’s join requests) so it might be more complicated (because cancelling join requests would be O(n) in the number of join requests) but will hopefully happen when the complete group revamp occurs??

If this is the case though, alternatively they could throw an error when you try accepting someone who cancelled their join request but still show it in the UI?

Why does it matter that you have a pending join request? It doesn’t use up your group limit.

You don’t get notified when you get accepted into the group, so sometimes you end up being in an extra group you didn’t mean to join or one that you no longer want to join.

If you no longer want to join the group, you won’t remember to go to that group and cancel your invitation.

I’d rather just know that I’m requesting access rather than joining the group like your other post suggests. A cancel button wouldn’t hurt but it wouldn’t be too useful either so I don’t think I’ll care if it gets added or not.

My question is why do you call these Quick Requests?

On Twitter, if you follow a private account, you can click cancel on the follow button again and it cancels your request. Same thing for groups?

The problem here doesn’t relate to group space though. I clarified this in the OP.

  • Let’s say you’re a “group pirate”, someone who tries to join abandoned groups to claim them. You’re met with a “Join Pending” instead of access into the group. You want to revoke that request but there’s no one to do so. This results in a join request permanently sitting in the group’s admin page and you can’t back out.
  • You find yourself on a group page after clicking an ad or because you found a group. You hit join and find out it’s a private-access group. Sometime after not being accepted or making a mistake hitting join, you want to back out but you can’t and thus have to wait for an administrator to decline or accept it. Maybe you don’t want to be accepted anymore or the group is one of those Serious RP communities where they blacklist you for sending join requests (it actually happens, sadly enough). A space of your groups or an avoidable community punishment occurs because you couldn’t cancel that request.
