Cannot believe it took this long to finally get this feature reimplemented. Sorting by genre was originally part of the functionality of the front page for as long as I could remember until it was inexplicably removed sometime around October of 2017…
I’m extremely glad that this feature is being reimplemented, I’m just genuinely curious as to why it was removed at all when its only intended purpose was to help users easily discover the kinds of games they were looking for.
Great update to see, I’m also excited for custom tags to describe games to become a thing, but… a three month cooldown to change the genre? That’s ridiculous, it’d make more sense if it was something like, 3 days to a week, but three MONTHS?
I assume this is to prevent people from abusing the algorithm by constantly switching their genre, but come on…
That’s gonna be torture for people who mistakenly set an incorrect genre for their game and want to correct it.
Disclaimer: I didn’t read this announcement in its entirety and only skimmed through it
Could you send me the link to the game? I could give an opinion based on the core loop.
Think of what actions the player does while playing. Explore a haunted house? Simulate working at a gas station? Fight against ghosts? Think of the main game mechanic. Hope that helps!
The act of developers choosing their genre and subgenre initially, aka this update, is Live right now. It takes 3 months to have access to change it though AFTER you do so for the first time.
I assume that’s what you meant, but you could be misunderstanding. As to why there is a time limit to change your genre, I’m unsure. Maybe to not overwhelm the algorithm/machine learning models behind the scenes, but idk.
In the meantime all of you can use this game to find stuff and I’m pretty sure it’s BETTER than this as players can rate the games and pick the genres. (shows %)
TL;DR rely on better discovery for this type of stuff, not developer-set genres (that is, assuming you aren’t against player set genres) especially since you can’t add multiple genres anymore from what I know, and:
Do genres and sub-genres directly affect the audience(s) that our games are recommended to on their home page?
This is a great feature though! I’ve previously had games go without genres for quite some time - which actually makes this an even more epic change if the answer to my question is any form of “yes”.
Thanks for reporting this problem. We identified an issue where some experiences cannot update their genre, and we’re are working on a fix right now. We will let you know once the problem is resolved.
