The removal of genres back in 2017 was one of my biggest social pain points, because the current categories on the Experiences page were not descriptive of the actual gameplay. Also discovery was easier back then; people itching for a fight could just sort for War games, or search Town and City to visit our roleplay neighborhood. We had daily visitors even without running advertisements, simply via the genre filters. So thanks for bringing this back! It’s been a LONG time coming…
Finally, all though the reasoning for not having horror as a genre makes no sense to me. Also, on the topic of genres, will we ever get a reason as to why the genre sort was removed or are you just going to continue ignoring it?
I don’t see genre selection for my experiences in the Creator Dashboard. Is this still being rolled out?
Roblox needs to pay more attention to the use of tags, they have a lot of potential.
For those wondering how the games api changed (https://games.roblox.com/v1/games?universeIds=0), new genre_l1 and genre_l2 fields got added, and the legacy genre is still there. The new fields are an empty string if the game did not set the genre with the new system
Though, question to whoever, is there a way to get the current list of available genres, as it was mentioned the list of genres and subgenres will change over time
It would be useful for my game Game Discovery Hub, although I can easily do without
Hi! I love the new feature that organizes games by genre it’s a great improvement! However, I’ve noticed some games are still misplaced in the wrong categories, which should be resolved. Also, popular genres like strategy and survival are too far down the charts, making them harder to find. Relocating them higher based on player interest would enhance visibility and reflect their popularity. Thanks for all the effort so far these tweaks could make it even better!
For instance, the music genre is ranked in the top 8, despite its smaller audience. While promoting it is great, genres like strategy, which encourage smarter, more engaging experiences, deserve higher visibility. Prioritizing genres with broader appeal could better reflect the interests of Roblox’s community.
Thanks, set the genre for my game!
Please do add “Difficulty Chart” as a subgenre to Obby, and let us search by genre.
why is your experiencing changing genres so frequently that this is an issue?
Idk maybe if you think the genre doesn’t fit
then why did you set it that way in the first place
Try to see if you can look at other games like yours and select a genre based on that.
my only complaint about this is that you guys removed the horror genre, which is something im not a huge fan of
it doesn’t really matter if you have other genres that fit into horror, i just think that it would be better to have a horror genre option with sub genres that already exist like survival or escape room.
just feel that horror genre needs to be brought back considering how horror is a massive stable of roblox, and there not being a proper genre for it feels like the horror games roblox has get neglected a lil.
Genre benchmarks on Creator Analytics are now updated to reflect the new genres.
I set the genre of my game after seeing this announcement and I’m starting to regret it. We have multiple different categories we could fit into, but I picked a category that a lot of story games belong to, so we’re now being compared to those really high average session lengths.
Prior to setting a genre, our session length was in the green. Now, even after increasing our session length by 2 minutes, we’re solidly in the red & I believe our impressions are paying for it (I know there’s more factors but that was the biggest change).
My question is, are there any drawbacks to just leaving a game as is without a genre? And what’s stopping people from picking the genres that their stats perform the best against?
Not to mention there’s a certain audience for horror and an audience for the opposite. This makes searching by genre–when released–less intuitive.
I appreciate Roblox’s efforts to improve the genre and subgenre system, but I believe this update has negatively impacted my game’s visibility. My team recently released a new game called Fashion Cats. I own a group with over 1 million members and have launched multiple successful games. Historically, our games have followed a consistent pattern: slowly gaining traction over a few weeks through sponsorships and eventually being picked up by the home recommendation system, at which point sponsorships are no longer needed.
However, at launch, Fashion Cats did not have a genre assigned, which I believe significantly hurt its discoverability during this critical release window. While we updated the genre as soon as the system allowed, the lack of a genre during those initial weeks may have irreparably affected the game’s visibility.
We’ve invested hundreds of thousands of Robux in advertisements, yet traction remains minimal compared to our previous releases. Given the timing of this update and our game’s unique challenges, I suspect the changes to the genre system have played a significant role in this performance discrepancy.
It’s frustrating to see such a stark contrast in performance compared to our past successes. Could the new system—or the time our game lacked a genre—still be affecting its discoverability? Are there additional steps we can take to ensure it reaches its intended audience? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated…
I’m late to this but several things:
Where is the Sci-Fi genre? I understand that utility & other exists for a reason, but it just doesn’t feel right associating a game focused around a super futuristic reactor with utilities
Why the extremely long 3 month cooldown for genre changes? There is absolutely no reason, technical or otherwise as to why it can’t be twice every 2 weeks, so just make it twice every 2 weeks
