Object Insertion Workflow Improvements [Live!]

Nice! Now I don’t have to go through loads and loads of stuff to find the thing I need.

How did you change the icons for the models in the window?

This update seems to have made my camera sensitivity too high. (I don’t know if this update caused it, but it wasn’t like this before). Is there any way to change it back to normal?

Can we get a small improvement to this where hovering over insert object opens up a small menu? Saving a click and a search would in particular make inserting stuff into script-only locations much simpler.

This update increased my CPU from ~6-7% idle on an empty baseplate to almost near 20% I have had to switch over to the avatar evolution build because of this.

Here are my specs:

This will be very useful. Nice job!

I dislike the update I wish when I right clicked and hovered over “Insert Object” the menu would open like it used to. This really hurts workflow and slows me down. I do like the new frequently used option that helps but it’s so annoying that it doesn’t open up when I hover over the name like it did for so many years.

This is okay i guess but the smooth scrolling as mentioned many times before is quite annoying. I wish you would actually listen to what the people who make you money actually want for a change and not waste time prettifying studio or forcing more limitations and moderation upon us. The developers are the life and blood of roblox without them it dies.

This is actually going to make things so much easier to operate specifically on any future deving workflow

I disagree the fact I cannot hover over the insert objects slows my workflow down. That additional click really is significant.

This is all good but I really miss being able to hover over the insert object button and get a popup list of objects to insert, but now I have to click the button. Its difficult to use right now because I had developed a muscle memory to hovering over it. I’ll probably get used to it but it would still be nice to let us hover.

The search filter is very useful - my favorite part actually. I was hoping something like this would come along. Thanks!

A hotkey, like “i”(in addition to the hover) after you right click, to open objects browser - would be a neat addition to look forward to.

Edit: I just realized Ctrl-I works to open the object browser, eliminating my right click. Excellent!

There are 2 thing that I don’t like and I think that most can agree.

  1. Now I can see much less objects in my view because the window is so small and the icons are big.
  2. The scroll smoothing feature needs to be removed or speed up 10x, because it just won’t stop and you go past the objects that you want.

Hey everyone,

We hear your feedback! Here is what we are changing:

  1. Improving the scrolling behavior! I will update this thread when this change is live. Apologies for this causing so many issues.
  2. We will hide RenderingTest

We have noted the desire for the context menu hover, but have no timeline on this.

Once again, we appreciate the feedback!

Greetings. I was using studio the other day and just noticed this change while programming. This is being called a “Workflow Improvement” but in fact for many people I have spoken to, this makes their projects take longer.

Now, instead of being able to see the list of objects we can add and just know where the objects we want are, we have to scroll down or search. This is not ideal to people like me (a programmer) who want to spend more time inside a script and not searching for an object to add. Obviously I don’t expect reverts or anything (that’s not how devforum works lol), but is it possible to override the “improvement” with plugins or just disable this, as for some it is not a workflow improvement, but a detriment.

Hi @Conmmander

Have you checked out our Expanded View? If so, what is missing in it, and is there any way we can improve that?

Maybe I just need more insights into your workflow. You should be able to have an object selected, hit Ctrl + I (with Expanded View enabled) and insert the object with no issues.

I just looked at the expanded view, and this is actually okay. Nothing is really “bad” in expanded view now that I have found this.

As for my workflow, I typically use the mouse to insert objects, and not Ctrl + I (I did not know this was a thing!) Obviously each person’s workflow is different, so it will be near impossible to cater towards everyone. Ideally something like how the old insert menu functioned, of just being able to navigate down to “Insert Object” and then go into the side menu would be good, rather than physically clicking “Insert Object” to open up the expanded view would be nice. (You know that extra click is so much extra effort.). The reason I used the mouse was because if I had to navigate to the object in explorer anyway, it took in my opinion too much extra time to go back to the keyboard anyway to use a keybind, and would be easier to just do a click and get a new object added.

If I was to suggest one thing for expanded view, it would be to control how objects are sorted. I’ve been using studio for probably 2-3 years now and am very used to an alphabetical organization. Perhaps the ability to put objects that can be sort able by category or alphabetical would be good. That’d really be the only adjustment to expanded view.

For now I guess I will get used to Ctrl + I I guess. Thank you for asking what could be improved though. I appreciate it!

Awesome.

Now how do I set it back to where it was before? This slows me down. T_T

Because previously I could fit everything into that window without needing to scroll via the horizontal sort in settings. AKA I always had the expanded view, and I can’t open expanded view and drop it back down to where I had it, it goes back to an annoyingly long list.

But why? It was perfectly fine the way it was imo. Now I’m gonna have to get out of the habit of just knowing where everything I used was. As someone else said, this was marked as a “workflow improvement” and while it may be to some, it’s not to all, especially since the old one worked well for the longest time and now it’s just replaced. Couldn’t we easily get a setting or just keep both? If you hover over it, it’ll pop open the old UI but if you click it it pops open the new one. Best of both worlds as I see it

I didn’t check beta frequently so I didn’t know this update until yesterday :0

Feedback on this update:

  1. The steps inserting a object is a lot longer than the past
In the past, it just need 3 main steps to insert a object: Touch “Insert object”, search the item you needed with your eye, click to insert it.
Now it need 4-5 main steps to insert a object: Click “Insert Object”, think of which category your object in, scroll and find that category or type to search the object you want, click to insert it.

Especially the clicking is really annoying because the past insert object window pop up when you touch.

  1. Search and categorize do help new developers to find objects
New developers may find it useful because they can search the object or find relevant object by going into category.
However, some of developers know what they need to find already and pretty sure they do not want to find the category first.
For example I need to insert BillboardGui, in the past I just need to search from ‘B’ and now I need to go to the category it is in which is “GUI” and this use a lot more time.

Suggestion:

  1. Popup the window when you touch it like the past instead of opening a new window, showing multiple column like expanded view automatically (probably optional in settings)
  2. A settings that could arrange them in alphabetical order without category.
