feeling so-so about this update personally

pros:

  • yippee i can upload ugc! very good step for developers personally, who wish to have merch other than shirts or pants tied to their game for example
  • id verification is good! forcing someone to have an id tied to their account lessens the chance of them uploading anything inappropriate, since they won’t ever be able to upload again if termed. still not zero, but hey, pretty good
  • according to the duration to approve assets, it seems that the moderation for this might actually be human instead of bot for once. this is good!

cons:

  • premium requirement is a bit dumb in my opinion and is probably going to serve as a way to make roblox extra money rather than empower creators. not the most terrible con out of this list tbh
  • inappropriate content. stolen ip. atleast we have the rights manager now, but i’ve already seen a few bypasses that i’ve had to report (not sure if that even works nowadays). might get worse in the long term, i’d imagine the moderation team is hard-focusing on the ugc market right now and that focus is likely going to lessen over the next few months.
  • 750 upload fee + 1.5k initial publishing fee is… yikes. a lot. all these fees everywhere, including the 100 per limited unit that was raised from it’s previous value seems like they’re just going to squeeze you dry. this might even encourage people to purchase robux from third party sites if they’re not a developer or a content creator of sorts, since you’d pretty much have to shell out between around 25-60 real life euros to upload an item. being a developer myself, these fees are not an issue for me but i can’t help but think of the less fortunate. compare that with the fact that you might need to reupload an item that had a mistake once or twice and that’s going to be a lot of money spent.

thankj you for coming to my ted talk :+1:

Worst update that roblox has made…

Tbh I don’t get the hate, roblox has shown that they have moderated inappropriate items up to now regardless of a few delays. This opens up the opportunity for smaller creators to upload their items whereas before you had to apply and only a few hundred people would be accepted.

Moreover, the items being uploaded that are limited ripoffs or inappropriate for other reasons were uploaded by people who got accepted through the application, so it’s something that is always going to be present. It’s impossible to completely control what people are going to upload but as long as it’s moderated I don’t see the issue with this at all.

Ofc theres going to be strict requirements to upload, that is part of how they are trying to moderate what gets uploaded and prevent rip offs or other issues that people were complaining about… :woman_shrugging:

This is such a bad take, these items should have never passed the approval/moderation system in the first place. We shouldn’t have to report something for roblox to take action.

You definitely don’t know how much sales these low effort items get, players LOVE buying items that could be considered a “shitpost” for example that grey cube that was being sold years ago when ugc was still somewhat new.

Why is everyone so mad about this? the catalog was already trash.

The roblox marketplace was already doing terrible, but like with this update y’all just doomed the marketplace, like lowkey y’all insane for taking such decision, giving so much trust on the users of the platform, I am not saying it’s a bad update, actually think it’s somewhat funny, but most likely y’all just opened the door to pure chaos that won’t probably be able to control, at least not for a while.

We’ll see what happens I guess.

There have been many points brought up in this topic, which in return most of them makes the marketplace already worse than it was.

After how many sales will the 10,000 Robux I spent get rebated back to me? “After you start making sales” isn’t a figure I want to work with. What is the exact number of sales you need?

If you upload an accessory for the 750 robux fee, can you wear it yourself in games without having to put it on sale?

Free UGC problems
Raising the price per free UGC copy is a terrible change from both developers’ and players’ point of view. Even the old price was too high in my opinion.

Having to pay a high price for every item you award to a player for free means that you need to either 1) keep the stock low enough to avoid losing too much robux or 2) ensure that your average earnings per user are high enough to cover the cost. This encourages people to create boring games that require the player to afk or grind for hours or tens of hours to get an item. As a result, most free UGC items have at least one of the following problems:

  • The requirements to get the item are tedious. Playing games is supposed to be fun. It’s not fun spending hours doing a repetitive task in a game you don’t like. Roblox shouldn’t expect people to devote all their free time to Roblox just to get some free items.
  • The item has a low stock that runs out quickly. This means that you can’t get the item a few days later like you could in traditional Roblox events. Even worse, you may not even have a chance to get it at all if it’s published when it’s night in your timezone and the stock runs out by the time of day when you have time to play. In addition to causing people to miss items they’d like, this may encourage players to play at night which is unhealthy. People can’t play Roblox 24/7.

These were already significant problems with the old price per copy, and multiplying that price will make the situation even worse.

Free UGC being expensive to create doesn’t make sense when UGC is public
A reason I can think of for justifying a high price per free item copy in non-public UGC is that being able to award free items would give the UGC program members’ games a competitive advantage over games made by people who aren’t in the program. However, now that UGC is public, that doesn’t apply anymore.

Solutions
One way to mitigate the problem is by reducing the price per copy to maybe 5 robux or less. However, I think it would be a better option to be able to buy availability time for a reasonable price instead of buying copies.

As I mentioned, one problem with stocks running out quickly is time zones. I think it’s unfair that you miss items just because the time at which they are published is bad for your time zone. Thus, I think the absolute minimum availability time for an item should be 24 hours. That way, it would be available during any time of day for everyone.

Even a 24 hour availability is quite short. Some days or weeks are busier than others. For example, you might have a lot of homework on Wednesday, but plenty of free time on the weekend. Thus, having a week or longer to get an item would be much better than a day. In any case, I think the availability time should be a multiple of 24 hours (24, 48, 72 etc.) to avoid the time zone problem.

The price of awarding free items should depend on availability time. The most important thing is that making an event in a game isn’t unreasonably expensive for anyone. If there is a desire to make the price divided by number of items awarded roughly equal for bigger and smaller games by making the same duration more expensive for bigger games, I do have a suggestion for that. Perhaps, in addition to depending on time, it should depend on monthly active users, since that way it could be roughly proportional to the number of people who get the item. There could also be a somewhat expensive (but not absurdly expensive) option to make a free item available forever.

The way Roblox event prizes have nearly always worked is that they’ve been available for players for a specific time regardless of how many people get them during that time. Only occasionally there have been special event prizes with a limited number of copies. The limited-time free item events have worked well for many years so why not allow game developers to make them? There have also been events whose prizes are still available years later, and I don’t see a problem with this either as it allows for new players to get free items without having to wait for new events.

Being able to create community events similar to traditional Roblox events for a reasonable price would enable a diverse range of events tailored for different audiences.

Conclusion
High prices on UGC copies encourage people to make boring experiences that require the player to afk or grind for hours or tens of hours to get a free item. Additionally, you usually need to do this in a short time frame because the items often run out of stock quickly. Free UGC could have potential for great community-created events, but such events are far from viable in the current state of free UGC.

In order to solve the problems, Roblox should ideally allow creators to award free UGC prizes for a specific time and for a reasonable price. If they don’t do this, they should at least significantly lower the price per copy to be even smaller than the previous.

If I unsubscribe from premium will my items go off-sale and will I lose money I’ve earnt from selling my items?

Yes you must keep paying for premium or your items will go off-sale. I don’t think they would remove the Robux you already have in your account.

Let’s just hope Roblox steps up their moderation efforts with the UGC marketplace now…

What does Roblox Premium has to do with anything creator related?! It’s the DevEx scandal all over again… You don’t need to earn more off your creators’ backs Roblox, you’re already doing a big enough bag at our expense
