Participate in our first Builder Challenge!

Love this challenge idea. Since I’m a GFX designer, I would love to see a contest happen in the GFX community too!

This challenge is awesome! I’m really wondering what people will come up with after being restricted to only using studio.

We are not allowed to use plugins that have an effect on our game for example studio build suite or gapfill.

However we can use plugins for motivation for example the rock with pancakes for it doesnt have a change for our game and just shows an image.

Just reminding you that submissions open in August make sure to submit then cause it will most likely be on a different post.

You can’t use textures or images, only studio presets, would love to be able to use a image editing software though.

But since we can’t use external software or the toolbox how would we even do this?

No there isn’t a prize for money/robux etc, but the true prize is exposure in the community because you will be known for winning a Builder Challenge hosted by Roblox themselves.

Well really, the point is work with the limitations of the software…

Oh I know that haha, I was just hoping I could publish it as a regular showcase afterwards. It’d be nice if the work could still have a purpose once the contest completes.

Yep the point of this challenge is to see who the best is at making a showcase/build using roblox provided tools. (but make sure the build is following the build topic provided)

I’m going to participate!
What a coincidence that this day I was building a low poly land.
this is going to be exciting!

Yep indeed it is since plugin and external apps aren’t allowed this is going to be very exciting and challenging as the name of this topic provided.

I hope there will be clarification on this. Many things are unclear unfortunately.

In my opinion everything is perfectly, clear may I ask what is unclear to you cause I can explain if you’d like.

I don’t understand why people are complaining about the rules. Considering the theme is a ravine, why would you need external textures/materials? The only use case would be for buildings. However, if you really think about it, why would someone build a house in a ravine?

This project seems doable with just ROBLOX Studio. You’ll be surprised with what you can actually make if you go back to basics.

Completely agreed I have seen a lot of complains and yet it isn’t really that hard, unless they are used to external applications.

One thing I’m confused about is what they mean by “Cannot require plugins/tools to function
What does this “to function” refer to? I already started building but it would have been nice for them to clarify this so I don’t have to bulldoze my build :frowning:

Also they say to use the particle system and say that we could even make a waterfall with it, but to do this we have to use our own created assets, which includes creating our own decals. But we need to use something to make that decal in the first place – which would be a third-party software because roblox doesn’t really have an image editing feature.

The examples provided in the paragraph listed with the theme make it seem like we actually can do a lot more in studio than we can actually do if we were to follow these restrictions 100% in my opinion.

Basically they mean that you can’t use a plugin that makes your build well “build” for example no SBS (studio build suite) or gapfill (these were just examples) as they aren’t studio features.

I’m pretty sure the “no external programs” rule was to allow newer/less skilled builders to actually have a chance at participating. If the rule wasn’t in place, you’d have huge showcase places built by big names in the showcasing community, since this is pretty much their one shot at having their work actually seen by people. Besides, if you’re going to make 99% of the game with external programs, why even bother with the limitations of ROBLOX Studio? Just learn how to use game engines like Unity and open yourself up to the world of commissions that are actually worth it (cough cough DevEx rates).

Just because someone mentions a particle system doesn’t mean it requires a texture. If you play around with transparency, speed, colours, etc. you can probably make something that looks half decent.

Plugins can be installed as studio features though.
I thought the point of Roblox Studio plugins was that you could build into your studio with these plugins and thus they would be part of roblox studio itself.
Also plugins like SBS do build yes, but all SBS does is speed up what you’re doing.

…on another note, I already used SBS because I like their hotkeys so this is so sad… u_u
