As a UGC creator the only way to upload Classic Heads and Classic Faces is by uploading them as accessories, or by bypassing Dynamic Head animation checks, however both of these have their issues:
Uploading heads/faces as accessories means that they do not support avatar colours.
Uploading non-animated heads to the Dynamic Head category makes it harder for customers to find real animated heads.
Uploading non-animated heads to the Dynamic Head category is technically against the guidelines.
Dynamic Heads do not allow makeup.
Classic Heads, and Classic Faces categories already exist. Opening these categories would create a whole new market for artists. It feels like a no-brainer to open up these categories to contribute to the marketplace, and enable more artists to earn on the platform.
If this is addressed it would:
Improve the searchability of the marketplace.
Make basic bundles easier for new artists to create.
Make heads and 2d faces that properly support avatar colours a possibility.
(might) Alleviate unanimated heads in the Dynamic Head category.
Create new opportunities to earn for the talented 2D, and 3D artists in the Roblox Community.
Since the accessory workaround requires you to pay a separate upload fee for every variant, many creators will only upload their faces in light skin tones. People of color get less options because some creators wonât spend the extra robux to offer an inclusive range of skin tones. This has been happening for over three years now, and could easily be solved from the ground up by opening up Classic Face uploads.
At RDC24, I pitched up the idea of custom or preset FACS interpolation types besides linear interpolation (e.g. stepped interpolation). I feel like if Roblox is really adamant about wanting to make heads/faces dynamic, this could be a decent option for bridging the gap of making animated 2D faces that donât look as jarring as they are. Aside from that there are still limitations with what is achievable and you make great points about not allowing makeup, searchability, unanimated heads in the Dynamic Head category, etc. I would like to see the support of actual classic heads and 2D faces on the avatar marketplace.
Completely sick of the dynamic heads category being flooded with pixelated ripped anime faces and generic emotes on a head mesh. If thereâs anything cool in this category, I canât bloody find it.
2D faces are not going away, it would be great if we could tailor the platform to the overwhelming desires of the artists and players using it!
I 100% agree with these changes and I would love to see these categories opening up for UGC.
We need these to be UGC categories. I donât know many people who wear dynamic heads unironically, or just because they have no other alternative. People who enjoy dynamic heads will have a better time finding animated heads and people who donât enjoy this feature, will finally have a market.
I really donât like dynamic and animated heads, and I have a very hard time discovering new static faces because they donât change skin tones, and they canât work on all head shapes.
I understand Roblox wantâs to have dynamic heads over classic heads, but why canât both co-exist? Thereâs people who hate animated heads, and dislike the uncanny vibes these heads have in-games.
We shouldnât be forced to use dynamic heads, perhaps, people would also enjoy dynamic heads more if it wasnât forced on them
A large collection of the heads in the âdynamic headsâ section arenât rigged up correctly (like the half-heads you mentioned) for them to be used in the way Roblox intends for them to be used - cluttering the category with heads that do not correctly support FaceControls, and making it harder for customers to find the types of assets theyâre looking for.
Itâs unlikely that this request will be fulfilled, but itâs worth a try!
I donât see the harm in opening up some categories that already exist though. Itâs more opportunities for both Roblox, and creators to make money.
Hi all - thanks a lot for raising this and agree that there are a lot of improvements we can make here Youâre right that uploading Classic Heads/Faces as accessories isnât a tenable solution here for a lot of the reasons you mentioned.
Weâre working towards a number of improvements here to resolve those four issues you laid out: supporting skin color, ensuring the Dynamic Head category has real animated Heads (and enforcing that), enabling increased customization on Dynamic Heads, and overall making this process easier on the creation side.
We hear you and are aware of these limitations today, and working towards resolving these issues you point out. Thanks a lot for the note, and appreciate you letting us know.
I think you should add classic faces in the âClassicsâ category, while still needing premium etc.
it would be quite simple as a lot of people (Including me) use static dynamic heads, if you want to delete some just check my inventory. Please add UGC classic faces at somepoint, it would make life a lot easier for many UGC creators and players!!
Not the OP but thanks for the response, since we havenât really heard much about Dynamic Heads in a long time.
Those improvements sound good, but I think the main problem is that a lot of people genuinely just want to use static 2D faces instead of 3D animated heads.
So why not just open up Classic Faces? The demand for them isnât going away. Instead of trying to force Dynamic Heads, both item types should be able to co-exist. People have been saying this for almost two years now.
I definitely agree when it comes to classic faces â uploading them as face accessories has never really made sense. But when it comes to classic heads, I really donât think opening that up is a good idea either.
There are thousands, maybe tens of thousands of UGC creators â but when it comes to head shapes, there are only so many directions you can take. Youâve got the cylinder, the default rounded head, maybe a diamond or tablet shape, and thatâs about it. After a point, everything starts repeating itself. Itâs just going to become a sea of low-effort, soulless meshes flooding the catalog.
Classic heads are inherently limited in form, and when you give that kind of limitation to thousands of creators at once, things spiral quickly into hot garbage territory. The same or a few iconic meshes will just keep getting spammed as everyone tries to profit â and in the end, that entire category will end up ruined.
Weâre already seeing a similar trend with dynamic heads. A lot of creators are uploading 2D classic-style faces as dynamic heads, but in reality, theyâre just reusing the same two or three head meshes repeatedly â the only thing that changes is the face design. So the variety isnât really coming from new head shapes; itâs heavily centered around face art.
And if even dynamic heads â which offer more room for expression â are being reduced to that, I canât imagine what the scene will look like when all people can upload are static, lifeless meshes. Honestly, instead of opening this up, Roblox could just re-release classic heads officially or bring back some of the long-offsale ones to fill that demand.
This does mention if classic faces and classic head options will become public for UGC creators, and I would like to point out that classic faces are just a decal. The fact that currently ugc creators are spamming low quality static faces on the dynamic heads tab makes it way harder to find dynamic heads that work with all the features dynamic heads can offer. Please add classic heads and classic faces to the ugc market so ugc creators who would like to fill that niche can use it, without spamming the dynamic heads tav.
This is not a good response. As many have pointed out, there is great demand for ugc creators being able to upload Classic Heads / Faces. Are you really working towards this? All you mentioned was improvements to dynamic heads.
The reason this category has so many static heads is because there is demand for this. If you do this, will you also open up the classic faces category so we can have the best of both worlds?
