Roblox 2019 Events Update

When the unofficial Discord announced this change, the Discord very quickly went into anger in regards to this change and the Twitter poll from @Ysko’s Twitter shows this.
The vocal community believes this is the wrong step and removing seasonal events.

Maybe Roblox should announce further information, there could be a deep underlying reason that the average player or developer doesn’t know. Maybe it costs 5k USD per event to host? Or the work is too much and this is what DevRel wants?

EDIT: After thinking about salaries and the work needed, I would think it would be more like a 6 figure USD cost per event; I think it may be a better idea to reduce the number of events.

I accidentally edited the poll which caused the votes to reset (sorry), but here was a screenshot I took a few minutes ago.

Out of 56 people, only two have voted that they like this change. Additionally, the discussions that I am seeing on twitter, discord here have all been negative.

I don’t think we should throw crap at Roblox, but I do think that they may wish to reconsider their abrupt and somewhat harsh decision.

I think that encouraging the developer community to band together and be more autonomous is good, however I think that going forward things will be very different. Change isn’t always bad, but I think this type of change isn’t exactly in the favor of the majority of the developers and community.

Q: Have any of the staff here communicated with us since this post recently regained activity? Has there been any sort of update on this situation?

They’re going through with it probably, I doubt they are changing their decisions based on this comment section.

BTW, I hate this update too.

i heard this from a youtuber since a few days that he mentioned about something that they are not going or planning to do monthly events, but there are going to be seasonal? isn’t that correct…?

(my apologies about the grammar, i’m getting ready for work tonight)

Nope, seasonal was removed in a edit.

Correct, this whole thing is scary, but it’s even more scarier that we aren’t hearing any information from staff members or anyone in-charge of announcing this change. I think the community would feel more understanding if we hear responses from staff members, rather than everyone here just making assumptions.

Hopefully they’ll respond here and let us know whats going on rather than abruptly editing the topic and sneaking in changes.

I feel like our only good chance at winning is proving the analytics to Roblox. We have had conversation on how greatly events benefit games and how poorly Live-Ops will, but nothing ever official.

We need graphs and numbers. Those who have had events in your game before, if you have recorded the player count before, during, and after the event, please disclose it. Show how much your game benefited from being featured in an event. Perhaps show how much income spiked. Basically, disclose any data that proves how beneficial events were to your game.

And for those of us who haven’t been featured, assist those who have with making graphs with their data. I personally recommend Google Sheets.

Roblox is a company and, by showing them the analytical evidence and how this change might affect income, we have a good chance to change their mind. I really hope we can cooperate as a community on this and bring about positive change!

I can see a problem with this. Example: Games that have levels in them and items that are unlocked by reaching a certain level. The games should at least allow players with lower level in said game or new players with no levels what so ever to unlock said prize. Whether it is a skin, weapon, or item.
What i’m getting at is at least feature games with this that are friendly to any new player or returning player to unlock the items the game offers.

Edit: This way if the player plays the game they wont be disappointed that the game requires you to be a certain level to play the event and never return to the game.

There have been some Tweets and YouTube Videos that are talking about this exact sentence. They are arguing, because they think that Egg Hunt is being cancelled.

Personally, LiveOps are a great idea to get developers more players, but I believe completely getting rid of events is really harsh for the ROBLOX Community.

I think if ROBLOX is getting rid of Events, they should at least let Egg Hunt last for this last year.

I think it’s best to wait and see how this whole LiveOps thing plays out, then start the criticism. It could be good, but we’ll never know unless we see it in action.

Yeah, because the best way to stop bad things from happening is to wait until they already happened.

Since @plasma_node accidentally edited the poll which caused the votes to reset I have decided to do another poll. :stuck_out_tongue:

  • I don’t like this change.
  • I like this change.

2 posts were merged into an existing topic: Off-topic and bump posts

Addendum:

My friend responded with a disapproval on the idea. This confirms that the idea will destroy the Roblox Community’s anticipation for free prizes.

The Egg Hunt is not cancelled. As it was already announced on the roblox twitter. It is coming out in the 18th of April. The live-ops will be starting somewhere in May.

Alright, now that I’ve read all the posts here, it’s time for me to drop my piece.

Live-Ops are pointless. A day of free advertising a month is worthless. These spots are also awarded to the games, not guaranteed. As a result, it will quickly turn to a conflict of interest for roblox; feature better updates, or feature more profitable ones? That said, I think I get what this is supposed to do; this whole thing is designed to get more money. By shooting their PR in the foot, they will increase and improve developers’ public appearances, making them more likely to sell items, in turn making Roblox more profit while minimizing expense. This shift was completely unwarranted and will likely lead to a decrease in profits in general; especially if better off developers disable microtransactions in protest.

The largest community affected by this, the players, is unable to comment on this. This is even worse. This kind of trend is leading me to question Roblox’s stability and is definitely cause for me to implement a killswitch for all my microtransactions.

I advise other developers do the same.

Such a killswitch would allow developers to not only speak their mind but punctuate it with a yellow dollar sign. Right now, Roblox is going with the thought that “devs will cover our policies, we just gotta keep them happy or tough it out until everyone more or less forgets”. This is because most developers aren’t going to do anything about it, other than potentially walk. They have your games and thus their income. A killswitch would speak volumes in this manner; they either have to get their mods to tamper with your games, reenabling your profits, or have to appease developers.

The former will likely lead to developers getting angry that Roblox violated their ownership of the IP to switch their profits back on. The latter is the desired outcome.

If they terminate the devs, of course, then that will just make their public image even worse. These malicious practices by Roblox need to see response. As others have said, the budget is likely not the issue. A few hundred grand means nothing to such a powerhouse of a company. The constant cycle of infrequent massively negative updates, like this one, make me believe roblox is not reliable or secure as a career and that I have nothing to lose implementing such a killswitch - in fact, such a killswitch will make free to play players happier.

Killswitching in this manner is actually comparable to this update: developers, by killswitching, would shoot themselves in the foot; but they’d use said act to instead send a message, rather than Roblox “supporting” devs.

Roblox needs to realize something; by cutting out things that make their community special in favor of making a Steam-Unity hybrid, they are probably driving players and developers away alike. With the heavy use of meshes now and the ability to export models, it’d be completely feasible for developers to turn and move to their competitors.

By removing Events, that’s exactly what they’re moving towards.

Communities need players. Especially the ROBLOX community. We are developers, we make games, we need to care for our players. That means caring for their interests. That means not cancelling ROBLOX events because of something like this.

It sounds good, but how many people that need to pay bills will follow through with this? Creators that rely on Roblox for support may not be able to do this.

Encouraging the developer community to band together is what should have always happened. But keep in mind that without the players, we couldn’t have been as known and successful for our game anyhow. The players are in favor of something, it is our responsibility to deliver it. Cancelling out these events were not a good idea as it kept people trying new games they never even heard of and promoting them greatly. Now they are throwing that away now? I hope this doesn’t become a forgotten memory. It was amazing to see these teams working on massive event games together and seeing amazing collaboration, in my eyes, it is art. This is something that should have never been thrown away.

Roblox is extremely profitable for high end devs and it’s possible for devs to open up patreons or PayPal’s or things like that and advertise on their Twitter or Discord asking for support (potentially even from other devs). Also, players, if they like a developer enough, will support a developer in any way possible.
