Alright, now that I’ve read all the posts here, it’s time for me to drop my piece.
Live-Ops are pointless. A day of free advertising a month is worthless. These spots are also awarded to the games, not guaranteed. As a result, it will quickly turn to a conflict of interest for roblox; feature better updates, or feature more profitable ones? That said, I think I get what this is supposed to do; this whole thing is designed to get more money. By shooting their PR in the foot, they will increase and improve developers’ public appearances, making them more likely to sell items, in turn making Roblox more profit while minimizing expense. This shift was completely unwarranted and will likely lead to a decrease in profits in general; especially if better off developers disable microtransactions in protest.
The largest community affected by this, the players, is unable to comment on this. This is even worse. This kind of trend is leading me to question Roblox’s stability and is definitely cause for me to implement a killswitch for all my microtransactions.
I advise other developers do the same.
Such a killswitch would allow developers to not only speak their mind but punctuate it with a yellow dollar sign. Right now, Roblox is going with the thought that “devs will cover our policies, we just gotta keep them happy or tough it out until everyone more or less forgets”. This is because most developers aren’t going to do anything about it, other than potentially walk. They have your games and thus their income. A killswitch would speak volumes in this manner; they either have to get their mods to tamper with your games, reenabling your profits, or have to appease developers.
The former will likely lead to developers getting angry that Roblox violated their ownership of the IP to switch their profits back on. The latter is the desired outcome.
If they terminate the devs, of course, then that will just make their public image even worse. These malicious practices by Roblox need to see response. As others have said, the budget is likely not the issue. A few hundred grand means nothing to such a powerhouse of a company. The constant cycle of infrequent massively negative updates, like this one, make me believe roblox is not reliable or secure as a career and that I have nothing to lose implementing such a killswitch - in fact, such a killswitch will make free to play players happier.
Killswitching in this manner is actually comparable to this update: developers, by killswitching, would shoot themselves in the foot; but they’d use said act to instead send a message, rather than Roblox “supporting” devs.
Roblox needs to realize something; by cutting out things that make their community special in favor of making a Steam-Unity hybrid, they are probably driving players and developers away alike. With the heavy use of meshes now and the ability to export models, it’d be completely feasible for developers to turn and move to their competitors.
By removing Events, that’s exactly what they’re moving towards.
