Roblox Curation: How Do We Consider Games for Today’s Picks?

Hey Creators!

It’s been over a year since we launched Today’s Picks on the homepage, and the Curation team’s had a blast featuring (and playing!) your incredible games. Today, we’d like to answer the biggest question developers ask us: How do we evaluate games to be featured on Today’s Picks?

Today’s Picks uses updated tags to inform users if your game has new content, events, or big updates!

Today’s Picks has a simple goal: Highlight relevant, fun daily content for our Roblox community to discover. While there’s no perfect formula, this post gives some updates from our previous post on what our team looks for in curated games and our review process. There are some key qualitative and quantitative considerations that weigh heavily on whether a game is selected to be featured on Today’s Picks. See below, and check out the FAQ at the bottom:

How does Roblox Curation decide what games to feature on Today’s Picks?

Qualitative Considerations

The Curation team reviews thousands of games, and we seek games that answer “Yes” to the following questions:

  • Does the game pass Roblox’s safety and brand guidelines? Every experience featured on Today’s Picks must pass our safety review process, and the Curation team works to ensure every featured game is safe and appropriate for our community, and also complies with Roblox’s Terms of Use and Community Standards. Be sure to also check out this guide to understanding intellectual property, and ensure your game’s content and thumbnails meet our policy guidelines.

  • Is the game appropriately tagged with the correct genre/subgenre/age/etc.? Players must know what to expect with your game, for both safety and transparency. That means accurately listing your game’s genre(s), content maturity labels, etc.

  • Does the game accurately reflect how it’s positioned/advertised? Does your game’s themes, aesthetic, tone, and mechanics reflect how it’s being depicted on description pages, thumbnails, promo videos/trailers, etc.?

  • Is the game well-built? A well-designed game makes all the difference:

    • Is gameplay smooth? Do bugs make the game unplayable? Can the game perform on low-end/older devices?
    • Is gameplay intuitive? Can any gamer, from seasoned players to first-time Robloxians, understand how to play your game on the first try?
    • Is gameplay player-focused? Does your game prioritize player enjoyment over monetization?Does it spam players with constant ad popups?
    • Is gameplay fun/engaging? This is clearly subjective, but no less important. No two games will be fun in the exact same way, but every great game will have something uniquely fun about it. Make your game the best at what it does, and give it a unique voice that resonates with our community!
    • Is the game original? Does the game bring a unique twist to its genre, or is it just a clone of other popular games?
  • Is the game a high-search genre or theme? While the Curation team looks for games across ALL genres, we’re especially interested in high-search genres (you can check out the genres page for more info). These currently include:

    • Role-playing games (Action RPG, Open World & Survival RPG, and Turn-based RPG))
    • Sports (American Football, Soccer/Football, Basketball, Baseball, Volleyball, etc)
    • Racing and driving simulators
    • Shooters (Battle Royale, Deathmatch Shooter, PvE Shooter)
    • Horror-themed
  • Regular Game Support: While updates can vary depending on the developer and their available resources, we prioritize games that clearly demonstrate active upkeep and engagement in events and updates, fixing bugs, and providing new content to players on a regular cadence.

In addition to featuring all types of games, we also highlight Roblox cultural moments and big content updates!

Quantitative Considerations:

You don’t need enormous numbers to end up on Today’s Picks, but we do consider a few numbers in particular which, all together, usually indicate engaging games that keep players coming back (and thus increases your chance of being featured!):

  • Retention (D1/D7): Are people returning to play your game? How many are coming back after days, weeks, months?
    • Daily retention (D1): How many people return to play your game after 1 day? Learn more about D1 retention here.
    • Weekly retention (D7): How many people return to play your game after 7 days? Learn more about D7 retention here.
  • Audience Growth: How many people are playing your game? Is that number growing/are more people starting to play? Do the people playing your game return, or is your audience shrinking over time?

Game Maintenance/Health Considerations:

We prioritize bringing users fresh, relevant content that consistently provides updates + fixes:

  • Share your new content updates as experience events. Registering your updates as experience events allows the Curation team to track—and time featuring your game on Today’s Picks with—your game’s new content. Experience events are a great way for us to find fresh content coming soon, so the more advance notice/information you provide, the better. Learn how to create experience events here.
  • Regularly update your game with fresh content. Games that provide consistent, regular updates (content updates, events, etc.) have a significantly higher chance of being featured. New content could include new maps, characters, abilities, items, season passes, etc. Typically we look for games that update in some way at least once per month, but that varies depending on the game and audience.
  • Engage with the Roblox community. Developers who engage with the Roblox community (be they fellow devs, users, or fans) and who use that feedback to improve their games typically have a higher chance at being featured. In addition, Roblox reaches out to every developer (via Dev Forum, email, other pre-existing channels) whom we would like to feature on Today’s Picks. This helps establish a communication line so we can better work with you in the future. Communicating with Roblox is a requirement to be considered for Today’s Picks.

Overall, there are two things to keep in mind:

  • There’s no magic spell for getting your game featured. We review thousands of games, and limited space means we can only feature a small number. Even if your game meets every guideline listed below, there’s no guarantee your game will be featured (but it still could be in the future!).
  • A game may appear on Today’s Picks for several reasons. The Curation team considers all sorts of things when deciding whether to feature a game. Maybe a spike in a key metric grabs our attention. Maybe we see a great update, a unique world, or an innovative game mechanic. Avoiding a rigid playbook allows our editorial picks to remain fresh for users and fair for featuring any game that stands out from the crowd.

While the Curation team looks for games independently, an additional (not required) way to be considered is submitting your game for review using our NEW form. After hearing feedback from the community, the Curation team is committing to responding to every form submission each month to inform them whether or not their game has been selected for consideration. For more details + other considerations, please check out our FAQ below.

At the end of the day, Today’s Picks is a mix of art and science. No single metric outweighs everything else, and the Curation team works (very) hard to ensure we’re considering every aspect of a game: developer, performance, mechanics, gameplay, creativity, and most important: fun for the Roblox community!

We can’t wait to review your game. :fire:

FAQ

What is Today’s Picks on Roblox?

  • Today’s Picks is an editorial space on Roblox.com’s homepage that features hand-curated games each day. From hidden gems and rising stars to influencer takeovers and updates from top hits, Today’s Picks was created to highlight relevant, fun daily content for Roblox’s 110M daily active users to discover.

How do I give my game the best chance to be selected for Today’s Picks?

  • The best way to get your game on Today’s Picks is to follow the guidelines above. Please note that there’s no guarantee your game will be curated even if it meets our guidelines, and games can appear on Today’s Picks for a wide variety of reasons (see above for more details).

My game hasn’t launched yet. Can I nominate my game for Today’s Picks using the nomination form?

  • The Curation team is always happy to consider games that haven’t yet launched, and we’ve promoted games on their first day in the past. Please note that the Curation team will need access to your game in advance for playtesting/review—if interested, we’ll reach out to you for early access (you don’t need to leave your game open to the public if you’re not ready to launch yet!). For games that haven’t yet launched, we strongly encourage you to submit well in advance of your launch date.

My game’s brand new, which means my metrics are small. Does that put me at a disadvantage?

  • Not at all! The Curation team actively looks to champion new and/or small games that we feel have high potential. Even with small metrics, your game has potential to be featured if your player base is growing steadily, players keep returning to play more, and your audience finds your game fun/engaging!

My game meets all the guidelines above. Why isn’t my game on Today’s Picks?

  • Meeting our guidelines is no guarantee of being selected for Today’s Picks. The Curation team reviews thousands of games, and there are always more experiences than we can feature. Even if your game ticks every “box” listed above, that doesn’t guarantee your game will be featured—but that doesn’t mean we won’t feature it in the future!

Can I nominate my game for Today’s Picks?

I nominated my game using the NEW nomination form, but never heard back. When will I get a response? Should I resubmit?

  • After hearing feedback from the community, the Curation team is committing to responding to every form submission each month to inform them whether or not their game has been selected for consideration. Please do not resubmit your game for consideration unless your game has undergone major changes since the previous submission.

How can I get my game noticed for Today’s Picks?

  • While meeting the above guidelines will always be the best way to get noticed for Today’s Picks, there are two helpful ways to help bring your game to the Curation team’s attention:

Does Today’s Picks favor just the top games on Roblox?

  • The Roblox Curation team doesn’t limit promotion to the most popular games. Indeed, we’re always on the hunt for new games, rising stars, and hidden gems to ensure quality games get the attention and visibility they deserve. Of all the games we’ve curated for Today’s Picks, 3 out of 4 are considered small- or mid-size games at the time of being featured. Any developer can appear on Today’s Picks!

Does monetization matter for getting chosen on Today’s Picks?

  • At present, monetization (i.e., Roblox spent) doesn’t play an impact on whether Curation selects a game for Today’s Picks.

Yes! We’ll be updating down the line. For now, these are the current high-search genres, so while there’s no optimal “release timing” for games within those genres, they’re always genres we’re interested in reviewing.

Today’s Picks is human-curated, not algorithm, but you can always check out the Roblox homepage to see what’s being featured that day.

Is there an exact reason why there can’t be like 10 curated games? 4 seems extremely artificial and restrictive for games that aren’t of the highest search traffics and activity levels

Was Today’s Picks fully released or is it still in testing? Because my account was never given access to Today’s Picks, it doesn’t appear on home. If I switch to a different account then it’ll appear.

Wasn’t the initial goal of Today’s Picks to further discovery of new/up-and-coming content? It recently just seems more like it’s reinforcing already established popularity.

Okay, so a lot of nuance and things that can disqualify or otherwise hurt chances. Communicating them to people is great, nice to see a new form and a written commitment to responding. I see how manually doing this is demanding; I can respect it.

drop-down to not clutter thread

That said, I say this program isn’t what Roblox needs long-term. I see “Curation team” here, “Discovery team” elsewhere, and many others that seem related. Nuance, the gray area of relevancy. In short, whatever would be better for search and discovery that the community has echoed for a decade, but that’s not y’all’s ballpark. Generally, and with specific products.

That said, I question whether this product (Today’s Picks) reaches its goals, what it set out to do. Is that at odds with what creators expected, or with what they want, or “need” even if it’s not what the “want”?

Roblox needs to reinforce popularity to an extent for platform stability and longevity. Or, that’s what I get from tech talks, RDC, etc. etc. And- things like this might go without saying or whatever. I’m just tired of the “any developer can appear on Today’s Picks!” and whatnot.

Like, I could present reasoning for why monetization does matter, whether systemically for visibility (like would a game with 10-100 CCU even be considered? I’m not saying it should be, cause I don’t think so, just saying there is a baseline.) or unconscious bias.. I could go on.

Why I don’t- I’m tired of caring about the platform. The problem is, I do still. I’m not sure what to do with that.

I can’t think of a more professional way to say it. That’s not a this-team thing, it’s more the company at large thing, from seemingly simple problems to hit-or-miss communication to all the safety stuff. I ramble, but I’m at a low point in terms of motivation atm. I’ve been wanting the conversation for so long that now that it’s here, I don’t even want to properly engage anymore.

you forgot to put “does it net us tons of money a day” in there

@Wheatly199 A good question! We’ve found in testing that putting too many games in a single sort (e.g., 10) causes significantly lower engagement/discovery for the games at the end of the line, particularly for games that aren’t the first 2-4 visible depending on your device (i.e., you have to scroll to view the hidden games). By no means a hard-fast rule, but in general we default to four to optimize everyone’s game being visible (on most desktops) + engagement for those picks.

Alright, now how does the recommended for you section work and why does it barely change at all for me? How often is that section refreshed?

Why has the continue section gotten confusing chronological ordering that triggers at pure random, can that behavior just be removed?

Furthermore, how come games around italian brainrot haven’t been marked as low quality? I don’t like this brainrot bandwagon at all
