Roblox's Blue Plaid Shirt is stolen

15 years ago - The original item, (ORIGINAL) DC Black Blue plaid jacket with gloves was created. Designed to match along with the collective appreciation for the “skater” aesthetic. This item, especially back then, was an instant hit. Users loved the design of this shirt, mix and matching it along outfits across the metaverse.

Now - Here’s where Roblox’s item comes in. The design for Blue Plaid Shirt was unfaithfully stolen from the source material by GPR3 6 years later, which not only had given no credit to the original creator, but now distributed this item to players for absolutely free.

As you can see, they already strike a pretty bearing resemblance to each other. But just wait until you see the two shirt templates aligned next to each other;

The original, created by Tophthetomboy:

GPR3’s ripped template:

Roblox should be ashamed to allow such asset theft to happen, and for such a high figure in the community to have not informed them that this wasn’t an original design.

If you’re too lazy to read all of this, here’s a 1 minute YouTube short which covers it all pretty well

Expected behavior

I expect proper credits to be given to the ORIGINAL creator of this shirt, and not someone who’d booted it into paint and affixed white borders along the sides of the template.

The current description is;

Designed and provided to the community by GPR3 the creator of so many top ROBLOX items. Be sure to check out other items made by GPR3 in the catalog.

Which is, obviously untrue, and proven to be fictious.

I don’t expect the design of this shirt to change, since I highly doubt Tophthetomboy is going to seek damages for the possible 50 robux they could’ve possible lost through this happening to them, though it’d just be nice to see Roblox have the correct history fed to players :man_shrugging: if possible I’d like the original creator to comment, though for now I’m just pointing this out.

I doubt @GPR3 would have any comment on this, however Roblox has put in their ToU that they’re allowed to steal all your work without giving any credit.

Except as otherwise described in Roblox’s Privacy Policy or any applicable Additional Terms,
[…]
(ii) you grant Roblox a nonexclusive, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, and fully sublicensable right to host, use, copy, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, run, create derivative works of, distribute, communicate to the public, and publicly perform or display including on a through-to-the-audience basis, such UGC and any related interaction data on the Services, throughout the world in any media for any business purpose in connection with operating, providing, publicizing, or improving the Services, including without limitation in connection with the training of machine learning and related models; however, Roblox will only share personal information that you provide in accordance with Roblox’s Privacy Policy.

This, and many other near-identical sections in the Terms of Use state that, more or less, “we are allowed to take your uploaded content and do as we like with it” - Roblox could absolutely just steal your content and you’d have zero recourse.

What they’re talking about and complaining about isn’t Roblox “stealing” the asset — it’s that someone who copied the original template with minor changes was given credit in the description, when the credit should’ve actually gone to the original creator.

It’s a pointless argument this is just how Roblox works.

Thank you for quoting what I responded to.

Roblox does not operate by giving credit to the wrong person.

Submitting a bug report regarding items created by Roblox, especially when it involves an issue with the item’s description, is completely valid. In this case, the user had a specific concern and submitted a bug report accordingly. It’s ethically expected that Roblox updates the item description based on this report. If you actually read the original post, they raise several valid points.

Right now, full credit is being given to someone who reused and lightly altered an existing clothing template, while the original creator—whose template was included for comparison—is overlooked. The differences are minimal, yet credit is still assigned to the copy.

There have been many issues with item descriptions corrected in the past. Assuming you’re new to the forum, I’ll include a few relevant instances below.

Ultimately, the final decision is up to the staff, so I won’t push it any further. In my opinion, the item’s description should be updated and the original creator should be mentioned, but if no changes are made, that’s fine too. I just shared my replies to better clarify the issue from my perspective.

Roblox should just credit both, since they both played a part in creating it.
