Please don’t get me wrong with this post. I do like change and I am not saying that “change = bad”. However, over the past year, Roblox has been moving onto the new font, Gotham, which has the following issues, at least for me:
- Source Sans Pro, the legacy font, has already been used for 5 years, maybe more. It was Roblox’s signature font until they changed it.
- Many games, such as Minion Rush use Gotham already. Roblox should not be trying to “go with the trend” and rather be a bit original with their font choice, in my opinion.
- It is uneasy on my eyes. The font just feels like it’s SCREAMING at me and is a bit too flashy. Not a good font choice for when your eyes are tired and you want some rest.
In Roblox’s first stage of pushing the new font, it was only on the website. You could use some browser extensions to forcibly change the font back. However, Roblox is now trying to push the font on the client. This is especially a problem as you cannot change that on there and who likes “flashy” letters constantly on your screen?
Roblox’s latest attempt to push the font is the new BubbleChat. While redesigning the core functions of it is good, some people just prefer the older font that it used.
While I like Roblox’s efforts to make everything more usable by redesigning it, some people, such as me just do not like the new font that stuff uses, as I said, it can be a bit too uneasy on your eyes. It’s not “just a matter of getting used to it”, as it is still uneasy on my eyes since the first page to include the new font, which was a year ago.
What benefits could a font toggle give to us and Roblox
- An easier on eyes user interface, that uses a simple font that is not harder to comprehend, which would be a QoL feature just like dark mode. Imagine the whole site being in Comic Sans…
- Almost no effort for Roblox engineers to implement, as a font family doesn’t break code and is just a visual change.
- Users would stop criticising redesigned features just due to the new font.
I don’t see why does Roblox want to just force the new font on us. Not to mention that the DevForum’s Vincent theme uses Source Sans Pro as the font family, and switching from a simple font to a more “fancy” font isn’t going to be very easy on your eyes.
