This feature should be an opt-in scheme. I know more games than less that will not want a feature like this within their games, respectively and most importantly community and group games. For normal front-page games which serve as the minority of content on this platform overshadowing the large amount of other content on this platform this may be a welcomed feature. But for alot of smaller games that deal with community based content or roleplay that involves the slightest bit of trust in the player it will make moderating this content a headache. All my games will actively seek to disable this feature.
Sounds like an interesting feature but I find this to be useless. Most games already allow players to change their usernames as like a role-play feature. I don’t understand why regular games would need this, and I’m sure most people don’t even pay attention to small details such as their usernames. I can already imagine scam bots, using this feature to impersonate people such as the Roblox account, or big developers.
I just don’t see a practical use for “Display Names”.
Nice! even tho I won’t use it , it will be very good to other people use it, just like what steam do.
This seems like a feature that would be heavily abused. This is a lot of privilege, and almost any community would abuse it.
apparently some kid made a account with the exact same name as my username but they used capital i’s to make it look like a L lol
I’d like to see the implementation take place, however I also want to see some security measures to be put into place to prevent abuse of the new feature (primarily concerning “impersonation”).
Developers should be able to toggle a switch in the Game Settings window in Roblox Studio to show either usernames or display names to prevent confusion amongst players in the chat (similar to how developers can switch between R6, R15, or both).
Ignoring the possibility of potential defamation amongst popular players on Roblox due to the possible abuse of this system, I can see that this will used more instead of changing actual usernames. People WILL take advantage of one free display name change per week instead of spending 1,000 robux on username changes at any time.
On the positive side, I do agree that this is an interesting feature and one which many players will enjoy. We’ve not seen anything like it on Roblox before and I think it will allow users to display themselves in a way in which they feel comfortable.
However, one thing I do wonder if these Display Names will show on assets created by a user. If the creator of an asset is displayed as the user’s display name, I feel this is only going to make the ongoing malicious assets situation on the toolbox and developer library much worse as people will attempt to impersonate popular asset developers and infect their assets such as models and plugins with malicious code.
I think the whole impersonation issue is something that Roblox are going to need to consider and address with these display names, as at the moment I feel this feature only makes it easier for users to impersonate popular influencers and developers. I’ve seen many suggestions for possible ways to address this, though I still believe this won’t be 100% avoidable and it’s inevitable that we will run into problems with users impersonating others in the future.
I like where this is going but, I do have a concern that I haven’t seen any conclusive answer for yet:
Won’t this make moderating your game difficult? Let’s say there’s two or more people playing with the same Display Name, or you’re looking at a screenshot of the chat (for example) after the fact, how will you know who is who? How will you for sure be punishing the right player?
No, materials service is for sure gonna top this.
I hope these displaynames will be able to be turned off in the game. If not then good job roblox, it’s now e ven easier to break your ToS
This doesn’t matter, many kids will still fall for impersonations easily.
probably they should make it if someone uses a nickname to either display as ~MiniToon
or give developers icons in playerlist so they cannot be impersonated. for example, people that will own the upcoming MAU (which stands for Monthly Active Users) crowns by the rank they have. this way they can fix the impersonating.
As I said, no matter how obvious the scam is, kids still fall for them. Instead of dealing with scam bots, roblox decides to make it even easier.
thats true, the only way to prevent this is adding a ‘~’ at the beginning of their nickname in the chat and leaderboard as i said earlier.
As I said earlier, kids won’t think too much. If they see [~mrfilmflam]: HEY GUYS I JUST EARNED ROBUX AT THIS SITE, they will just get hyped and go there.
maybe add a verification system while changing ur displayname? and adding restrictions like, a verified email + have an account that had atleast 1 purchase of robux or premium, or 6months old account
This can help but it will significantly limit users who have access to that feature. I myself have never spent money on robux, all the robux I have is earned by developing.
then they should make it like having atleast 50+ robux earnings on your account, either via purchase or gamepass/clothing sales
that’s just my opinion, but there are alot of stuff they can set as restrictions in order to allow free display names to everyone
This is not a good idea for multiple reasons but some people will be mad for username snipes and people impersonation changing their name to “Kreekcraft” HEY GUYS I GOT ROBUX AT bruh.gg, and it should cost maybe a LITTLE of robux because it would be better because scam bots are just bots and if they dont spend robux because they aren’t going to spend robux.
why would people be mad for username snipes? imagine not having to snipe a username anymore and just using whatever u want?
im pretty sure people that care about username snipes will be happy about this. if they like 3 letters names they can finally have them with no struggles. impersonating is what’s im concerned about. anything else seems really good with this update and im really interested to see how this goes for roblox and how appreciated this update will be. it sounds interesting and all, but as i said, impersonating is the main issue with it.
