The thing is: If you see a flying guy in your game, you instantly see their username and are able to report/ban them. With the new names this can get confusing a lot especially if user picks same displayname as another, innocent user. I am personally against this update and will most likely disable this in my games unless these issues are solved somehow.
I get impersonation might not be a problem on the site, because you can just check their actual Roblox username. However it is a different story in-game, where someone can just go around being toxic with your name and frame you… But other then that this is a great idea.
I love it! I see nothing bad about this except for two things:
-
Bots! There will be bots in avatars and display names of trustworthy people and will be scamming them
-
Code change. I will have to go through and change my code so that it shows the display name where it should and where it shouldn’t
This is already done, official Roblox Staff members & administrators have custom badges in-game, and also have a gold highlight to their chat if they are in a game that is using default chat features. There are also interns, star creators, etc, so I believe this update & transition overall will be smooth. Hooray!
You’re not required to use the DisplayName
instead – it’s just a suggestion for UX purpose.
This would defeat the purpose of the Display Name system. If I want my display name to be John - welp the roblox user “John” already exists.
It really doesn’t. If players are aware DisplayNames exist (they will since even new players will be prompted to set one), they won’t fall for that.
It’s not like only impersonators have access or are aware of DisplayNames. Everyone creating a new account will. Roblox is most likely prompt existing users to set a displayname as well.
As you said “similar” not the same.
WITH this update you can choose a display name of your like.
Remember that roblox has lots of kids in it and kids fall for a lot of scams. This update will make scamming a lot easier.
Already possible with false groups. Even then, since DisplayNames are easily accessible to everyone, it’ll be much less effective than a similar username.
It’s not useless. Let’s say you have an NPC talking to the player, they would now say “hello chris” rather than “hello chrisplayzroblox23423423”. It makes the experience alot more personal
Love this, yeah there is some negatives but hey its awesome.
I was already thinking of ways to combat this, such as a setting in-game and on-site to disable, reorder, or tinker with the display name feature; Reordering display names to appear below usernames in-game, or changing the way they’re displayed on default player characters (such as “(displayname) [(username)]”, or a combination of realistically anything.
I was thinking the exact same thing. This feature will cause a ton of problems for me and many people. If devs really want display names for people in their game, they can just add them! You already see this in RP games.
Yes, it has a lot of kids. But even a kid can realize everyone can have the same displayname when the game tells them about displaynames and allows them to use one.
I have a controversial proposal:
What if for all the extremely worried developers about impersonation, you could get a sort of “license” to your username for a large fee? Probably relatively expensive so people can’t go around sniping display names as well. Maybe 25,000 - 100,000 robux
Owners of large games could use this to avoid impersonation in any game
Also
There could be a feature that automatically hides any display names that are the same as the game creator of the place they’re in?
Again, Roblox already has special identifiers and unique badges to those who qualify for it, so the point of impersonation only applies to a small group of Roblox celebrities and developers. Either way, it’s pretty easy to identify an impersonator compared to an actual person via their username, so this risk is very minimal and does not pose much of a threat compared to other on-going problems on the platform.
I mean, the feature is a good idea, seeing as how you can now have a single name across the entire platform that doesn’t clash too much against your actual username. I understand the complaints also about how malicious actors can use this against players.
E: I also note your specific mention about social roleplay games having a display name feature.
Exactly. Especially when players are prompted to set one to begin with, increasing awareness.
Some children, don’t know official roblox developers have badges.
