Say "Hello" to Display Names!

Well yes, but my point is not just directed towards me. I’m sure other developers will have to deal with impersonation for the first time.

True, thats one of the down sides.

Not wanting to sound sarcastic here, with all due respect, it’d really help if you prioritized useful features rather than features which no one really has asked for.

Among useful features, there’s being able to clear your username history, follow users (see Twitter), filter games with more extensive filter options (see Steam), filter out UGC in the avatar shop, add more genre tags to your game (see Steam) and other useful information like supported languages and minimum system requirements, post customer reviews (see Steam) etc.

There’s still a lot to be done to the Roblox website before you, Roblox, start thinking of new ways of expressing oneself through “Display Names”.

I like the idea of this as I see it can be pretty cool to have custom display names, but I have a few questions/concerns over this idea.

  1. Can display names be optional? Meaning they can be turned on and off for certain games that do not want to use them and want to just stick with using player.Name in their games. I feel like this could also help settle certain problems some games might face if this was here.

  2. Impersonation As stated my so many others, impersonation is a huge troubling factor that a lot of people might have to take into account is now here. People will be able to get manipulated, and it can cause a downfall in trust. Especially with being able to use display names, you can get a lot of people who might try trolling/interupting games just joining a game with the same name.

  3. Ability to blacklist certain names Basically there can be certain names you may not want in your game, especially if you have an admin in it and you try to kick someone named “all” or “others” etc… But it could also take away certain custom names in your game like if someone tries to impersonate a developers name, it doesn’t work. And all of this could be reset to the original players username.

These are just 3 of my biggest concerns and questions I looked through the developer forum. Certainly finding a way to fix/implement these things can make this is a much better system and overall make display names a huge success across the platform.

Oh I’m sure as well, hmm, I guess the question, is will the display name be used on the majority of the website or only in certain areas or in-game? As for impersonation maybe devs could implement a system within their staff network, such as a codeword or security questions, that changes frequently in order to prevent memory and would signify that you are who you say you are. It’s not the best or even automated approach but it should be able to stave off many low-effort and some effortful impersonations.

This is assuming all devs will do this, which won’t be the case.

Not really the solution one would expect and definitely not what Roblox should be focusing on at this point.

The arguments for why this is not a good solution can be found repeatedly in this thread.

there should be added a feature for the leaderboard to show an icon to developers for owning items such as this Gold Crown of O’s - Roblox, in order to prevent impersonation by other players. starts with golden crown and ends with bluesteel.
thats how i’d see the things work good for somebody else, because while its hard to get alot of monthly users in ur games, it isnt impossible and giving developers this icon in leaderboard will very much prevent impersonation for smaller and bigger developers. i also think there should also be other ways to prevent impersonation by requiring the user to have a verified email, have a 6 months old account or anything that could prevent users from just making an alt and changing their display name right away.

Yeah, but it’s all I can think of and some may use it in order to gain a bit more security.

Obviously my perspective is a bit one-sided on the subject matter of impersonation due to it happening to me a few times in the past year. There’s always a risk of impersonation: think Discord, Twitter, etc. With that being said, that isn’t justification for allowing impersonation, but I think we should all calm down and wait to see how this feature fully gets implemented before making up worse case scenarios.

Can you allow a option for developers to disable display name in their games? Because for my free admin commands game display name will cause a confusion for the players name and display name to do commands on players.

Honestly, this is exciting! People who couldn’t get the username they wanted can use it has their display name and have that instead. This could do a lot of halt the people selling roblox accounts for their usernames. But this could also lead to impersonation of developers. Star creators have less of a problem with this because of the symbol next to their name. Maybe roblox could add something like this for non star creator YouTubers and a different one for well known developers. They already have this for the developer of the game when they play the game they created. Honestly, I think this update could work if roblox implements it in the correct way.

It shouldn’t cause any confusion to your scripts unless you’re already directly referencing the players DisplayName (Player.Displayname)

Display names won’t overwrite the players instance name because it’s stored in a property of Player.

So what is the point of this? This brings nothing but problems. Shortening your name? Then don’t chose that name to begin with? Adding this inside ROBLOX games as well? What was this team on when they thought of this?

that’s why roblox should add icons for developers owning the upcoming MAU crowns with their respective rank, gold, adurite, blusteel etc

I feel like this feature is a great way to express personality! Great feature, looking forward to it and some of the hilarious and creative ways people will utilize it. Hopefully no one abuses this feature to the extent of removal, but overall looking forward to it!

I wonder if some games that use usernames for datastores instead of user ids would be affected? I may be dumb though that probably won’t happen.

I mean with impersonation and all the only escape is to have a 23 character username. Because the max I think is 20

When will this be rolling out?

I feel that this is a good update, but have concerns as with the others on impersonation of people within the Roblox community. A system of checks should be taken into consideration and moderation of names to ensure that these problems do not happen.
