Say "Hello" to Display Names!

I thought about suggesting this feature literally yesterday but thought Roblox could never implement something like this. I’m shocked. Wow! Good job. But what are you going to do with regards to admin impersonators?

I think this is a good idea for people that don’t like their name and can’t afford to change it, but I can definetely see people impersonating others such as roblox staff, and using it to their advantage by posting free robux scams as a roblox admin, which would make alot of people fall for it because they think it is a roblox admin.

I believe that this is true. Will there be a feature to disable display names in-game for some games.

I am not well known, but me and my friends own a group with 1.2k members and its very active but, I belive in groups this will cause drama, with people bypassing they could send threats and other things pretending to be the owner and this should be disabled for games if you dont want to cause drama here is some links that might help:

For sure, this is one of the big downsides that this update presents.

Maybe the icons for developers and star creators should show in group posts as well, or maybe an icon for the group owner that shows when they post. Of course this wouldn’t work if they had a holder account holding the group, but maybe the group owner can choose which roles have icons next to them?

This looks like a very pointless and unnecessary update.

I don’t see the need for nicknames, and all I can see coming out of this is new scams and impersonators. It will be easy to trick younger players into thinking you are some sort of admin, or pretending to be a famous developer.

The only benefit I see, is that people with usernames they dislike will get a chance to change their display names without paying robux.

Good update in my opinion , but many of them might misuse it.

I totally agree, i always saw roblox usernames as unique identities, a way users could show their creativity. Rare usernames have value, this update is pointless and will issue more problems than benefits

I think there should be a way to identify reputable developers and players like a Twitter verified mark. If people will match display names, that opens up a whole can of worms for young kids to get confused in. The verified mark would help identify the reputable game owners.

Why exactly does Roblox need a way to show non-unique usernames? I see it as adding unnecessary complexity to security and identity on the platform.

The backend for programmers just seems like it’s going to get a lot messier. Since you can’t identify a unique username or user ID when provided with a non-unique display name. As I see it now the backend of game’s such as datastores will not have issues with this, but what about situations where Player A needs to types in Player B’s name? Developers now have to tell player’s to locate the Username of the user, and tell them that no, it’s not what’s shown chat. No, it’s not what is shown on the player list. And no, it’s not what is shown above their character.

Also, why keep Usernames at this point? Usernames would basically become less useful UserId if this update took affect.

There should be an option to disable Display names in your games to prevent impersonation. It’s also great that people who don’t have robux can finally change their name if they set it to something weird when they were younger. Even though i have mixed feelings about this update i cannot wait!

Yeah less than seven days gives more impersonating and this already seems to have lots of impersonating on it.

I agree with you, Roblox should add that to keep the community safe or this can cause drama and become a huge disaster.

Your 6th question yes, there was a some ancient exploit few months or even years ago that allowed you to change your ingame name to anything you want by changing DisplayName property on join request and it changed both overhead name and leaderboard name

If people changed their display name to “Duckzye,” I could see several kids that play my game getting crazy confused. I think the verified check mark is a must.

I’m pretty sure roblox has known concerns of all of these problems which is probably why they are releasing this in some months, you guys are over exaggerating too much

Don’t you think these problems are too “obvious”?

Actually no not just the role-playing crowd. For example recently on twitter Poke wanted to have the account name Poke because the previous user was banned. This is a use for displaynames as he can set his to Poke. My old account lonestarr101 got stolen when I was a kid, now I can have that name.
