A verified icon would just cause it to become a status symbol rather than a means of being the real deal.
not a huge fan of this. a lot of developers already created this feature in their games. however i wouldn’t be against it if it remained optional for game developers.
Where is it, is it disabled already?
Hey @pyxfluff,
The feature will gradually reach all players in Roblox. There should be another announcement when 100% of players have access.
Hm, ok. Kind of questioning this because I am a beta tester.
Hey @Tech_Man,
To be honest with you, I feel the same. If there was a way to script it or via game settings to disable the feature, I would set it false. If developers really wanted the feature they could easily script a system.
It should be available to you sooner then, though I’m not too sure.
It’s been said a lot yeah, unfortunately there’s nothing we can do except wait for a fix.
This is one of the greatest updates Roblox has decided to add. For years I always wanted to be Tmaster instead of Tmasterxtreme, soon we will finally be able to use the names we truly wanted. You can change your name from DarkWolf989658943027 to DarkWolf or there can be thousands of CoolRobloxFan users! It’s like a roleplay name that you can take into any game. You can express yourself by dressing up as a character and then changing your name to be that character, the possibilities are endless!
The only flaw with this system is that scammers may try to impersonate admins, though this can easily trick a lot of users it can also be prevented. Roblox can simply fix this by showing @username under the display name when the player clicks the user in the playerlist. You just have to be smart enough to check and tell the difference, also if they do not have the admin badge then they are not real admins. I don’t see the need for display names such as ROBLOX to be blacklisted, maybe some people just wanna roleplay as ROBLOX or builderman for the fun of it so not everyone will use these names for bad intentions. As long as that @username is visible when the player checks to see if the person is a real admin or youtuber then that should be good enough to prevent people from getting scammed.
A simple solution to impersonation would be to include a small tag or dot beside a username on the playerlist if it is a Display Name, and like viewing avatar outfits, you can click on their playerlist name to reveal their inventory plus actual username.
Other than that, I feel people are getting way too angry about this update. As long as it doesn’t break any existing scripts that reference playernames, I’m all for extra options!
FINALLY, we don’t need to pay 1000 robux to change our username!
Yall gotta chill… Certain names are protected (vague requirements) to prevent impersonation. Names that are similar to a “protected” name will be moderated. Visit this site for more information.
i totally agree with that, but kids who dont know any better about roblox just trying to have some fun on roblox can get scammed without knowing there is a feature like this.
So, it’s a cool update. In theory.
Impersonation. Big problem, especially for scam bots! Will this be limited to older accounts? I feel like you should have had your account for a decent amount of time before being able to change the name. 7 days is also way too little, and I think it should be at least a month to discourage misuse. I also feel like 3 to 20 characters is a bit too generous (mainly the minimum) and is a huge slap in the face to people with 3 letter usernames or usernames with spaces. Let them be special!
Also, will there be any sort of compensation for how much we’ve paid when changing our names originally? I get that your original username is still “yours” but I do feel kind of wronged knowing that the thousands of robux I’ve spent means nothing now. Anyone can walk around with the name “floofness”.
Other than those two issues, it’s a very cool change! I’m just a bit scared of what it may bring. The only other thing I’d like to know is if an option will be added for us as developers to disable these names. But it’s cool that the feeling of having your super cool name be ruined by numbers is gone!
Yes. That’s true. The filter right now, of course, it’s not released yet, but the filter right now does need some improvement, but for the most part, it seems to be ok, star creators usernames are considered moderated, staff usernames, etc.
DisplayNames are read-only. That’s not possible.
I don’t think this update will be good.
Impersonation will become a HUGE issue. Not only will players be able to disguise as ROBLOX staff or popular developers to scam players, but they can also frame these developers simply because the impersonator doesn’t like them.
They can say something rude and disrespectful while having the same avatar and display name as a popular developer and the real developer could get falsely banned while the impersonator gets off scot-free.
Unless the real username shows next to the player’s display name, scams and framing using display names will become inevitable.
incapaz it will be fine we can figure out if there fake its easy.
This is going to change Roblox for sure. Imagine groups of people raiding the server with bypassed names. On the other hand, communication will be much better, hopefully.
But to be fair, I’m not a huge fan of this as it kinda ruins Roblox’s uniqueness.
Just because most of the people on devforum can identify the impersonators doesn’t mean most 8 year olds can identify them.
They can’t, and about 75% of players on Roblox are kids that would fall for the scam without a second thought about if the person speaking to them is the real one or fake because they don’t know any better. That’s why people are asking about the measurments put by Roblox to prevent this type of scam from happening.
