Say "Hello" to Display Names!

To be honest, it seems like it’ll ruin Roblox’s unique. Just personal opinion.
What I’ll be expecting is a lot of group raiding and trolling from people.

Very cool and good. I wonder if Groups will be able to have their own display names/name changes?

There should be a Verified checkmark/name reservation feature so people are not impersonated by their enemies, though.

As the new info is here I want to complain about one feature: moderation of display names.
As you can see my name is ‘Jermartynojm’ I want to set my display name to something better like ‘jermartyno’ or ‘Jermartyno’ or ‘jermartyno_jm’. The problem is that all my display names gets filtered.

See it here:

There should be a feature that you can set your display name to lowered, capitalized or similar string to your username. However other players (if the string gets filtered) should not be able to use it.
Example: I can set my name to ‘jermartyno’, even when it gets normally filtered, because it is similar to my username. Other player is trying to set their display name to ‘jermartyno’ but they are not able to do it because the string gets filtered for everyone except players with username similar to their name.

Also note that there should be restrictions for users that have similar name to popular creators. So MiNIToon2476’s display name (if he tries to set his display name to ‘MiniToon’) should still be filtered even when his name is similar to ‘MiniToon’.

My thoughts exactly. Some people are asking for a verification badge, but that just doesn’t cover everyone and everybody will be constantly applying for those for different reasons making the mods even more busy than they already are.

If we could just pull up profile info in game like someone’s ID, Username, and Display Name it’d be much easier. Maybe make it so we can send friend requests from that menu too as a way to encourage using it.

I know it’s work for the Roblox staff but over all that’s their job. To make the player as usable and friendly as possible.

You should always use a user’s UserId to identify that user. It’s especially important to use them when working with DataStore keys, as players have the ability to change their username.

I agree this would be super beneficial.

ROBLOX added a API that fixes that for very popular people but not people like us who have less than 100,000 total visits

Were can I test the Display name I want?

I remain both skeptical and optimistic about this feature. I think it’ll be easier to comprehend when they roll it out or provide some sort of visual.

I think this will be a unique challenge for anybody creating an overhead UI for the client. Will there be new properties within the Client’s humanoid that give the following information:

  • Display Name
  • Username

Like I said, I’m extremely confused how this will work out. (And I’m sure everybody else is confused as well.) So I’m going to hold all my judgements until I see this in action or in visual form.

I don’t understand why roblox did this update…

A lot of people are going to get scammed really easily, just by the fact that people can set the Display Name to whatever they want and impersonate whoever they want to. Some names are filtered, but you can bypass them so easy in many ways.

I’m not really sure if this update was made because the youtuber Poke wanted the username Poke in roblox instead of Pokediger1, and somehow that situation was really controversial. Personally I don’t understand why Poke couldn’t get the username Poke in roblox, because at the end of the day, it’s just a username; Also the account with the name poke is permanently banned and haven’t logged in the account for around 14 years.

In my opinion, I don’t like this update. I really hope that roblox remove this update, or at least add more precautions when people set the Display Name.

Hope this helps!

I think roblox has a good idea with the concept, but I can see several scams occurring from this… Perhaps you should make it so people have tags like that in discord?

I actually think this update is a terrible idea. Like who in their right mind thought this was a good move? Yes it provides the ever growing player base the opportunity to access a sane username, but it actually creates way more problems than it solves. Just because social media platforms like Steam and Twitter are doing it, doesn’t make it a good idea.

I think if the Roblox Team just invested a little more time into R&D, there could have been a much smarter way to introduce the fixes that needed to be added; this just feels like a quick copy & paste from existing identification systems.

Specifically, as mentioned in SO many other posts on the devforum throughout the years, purging inactive accounts would solve the issues related to the increasingly limited username availability. It would also clean up storage and space on their servers, saving them money AND generating them money because people will pay for username changes.

I also think that they should have limited the number of username changes a user can make instead of just sticking a price tag on it. This new system is going to make username changes pointless which just reduces the amount Roblox makes.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of anyone actually ask for this feature and yet it’s being introduced. Don’t get me wrong, I’m super glad that something is being done at the very least to control the finite username supply, however I feel as though this introduction is just a cheap Band-Aid. Who knows, but I think they could have done better.

Alright, after doing some skimming through this thread again, this update should not be rolled out based on the risk of impersonation. I will be forcing my games’ players to use their username as their “display name” through a script as a sense of protest against the feature being implemented.

Yeah this is what I thought about doing. I’m going to advise everyone I know to do the same. Unless they want to make scam cases and impersonation nearly impossible to trace or prove, this is the best way. It’s such a shame Roblox didn’t really think this through…

Thanks Roblox, another update that we don’t need and didn’t ask for, that will probably make using Roblox a lot more difficult.

Hi. This is gonna be a bit long, so read only if you have patience or are interested.

There are issues with impersonation, bullying, and to me it may seem kind of counterintuitive. Don’t get me wrong, this is a great feature. The fact that people can change their name without having to spend thousands of Robux and not spam it every 10 seconds like Steam is great. But we’re also forgetting this is a platform that many kids use. Plus, not everyone will be aware of the update until it’s too late. Might as well make an announcement on the Blog while you’re at it.

I think that if we’re gonna make this a feature, not only should that player’s username be under their display name when you click it on the player list… but also under their display name shown above their character’s head. Yeah, it’s gonna be kinda embarrassing to know that their former name is “coolgamer117”, but at least someone with a clear mind will know this person’s username is “Valorein”, therefore if their display name is “Valorein”, and they both match, then they’re the real deal.

Now, if you plan on keeping only the display name above the character’s head, that’s fine and all, but not everybody’s smart enough to check the player list to see x, y or z’s identifier. In that case, we have a few options:

  1. On the player list, also add that person’s username under their display name without having to click on it. Or, if you hover over that person’s display name, it will reveal that person’s actual username.
  2. People in general are gonna be really confused as to which “Vurse” or “mygame43” or “dued1” is real. 'Cause EVERYONE is gonna be x, y and z. Colored usernames in chat wouldn’t make a difference. They’re gonna be wondering which out of all the "Billy"s are their actual friend.

“The yellow one? No. The green one? No. The blue one? No! The pink one? Yes… wait, there’s 2! Not that one!”

I think that if there’s multiple players with the same display name in a server, the Roblox client should automatically restrict the same username to various colors to make it easier to identify which “Billy” you are.

  1. Impersonation and bullying. If someone named “Fred” were to exploit and you catch them on video, and it so happens that there are 5 people named Fred in that same server, it’s gonna be kinda hard to tell which Fred is the one exploiting. And if there are 2 Freds and both are insulting you, how can you tell which 3 aren’t involved? You might as well report all of them! This is where colored names can be useful. The color of that person’s chat name… should be the same in the player list to make it easier to tell the culprit apart from the innocents.

EDIT: Having a player’s display name color above their character’s head, on the player list, and in the chat all match, should also be considered.

As for the “counterintuitive” part, I have a few questions.

  1. The username will continue to be used to log in, and the display name is only gonna be visible in-game, not so? Then, is the same display name with that person’s username gonna be on the website?

— If not, it’s gonna be real confusing when I join bobcatgamer775, and turns out I’m friends with this new guy called Xtremely, and have to click or hover over their name in the list to see if this guy is the same one I joined. In an alternate setting, I could be joining one friend, and I have two friends in the same server. They both have different display names, I’m gonna be wondering which one is the one I joined, or did they leave?

  1. Is Robux still gonna be used to change your username? If so, good. It should stay like that. Will you charge less to change it? Even better!

— If we did like Steam and weren’t able to change our username, only for this shiny new feature called display names to roll out after usernames were being changed for years with thousands of Robux, and the display name wouldn’t even show up on the website, it’s gonna be real embarrassing if this guy’s name is SilverSmith, but their username is “i_like_turtles420”, and because they can’t change it they’ll be stuck with that for the rest of their life. The PTSD will kick in when they’re logging in too, and they’d just have to lie to themselves saying “My name is SilverSmith” just to feel better about themselves.

As one final suggestion, I agree that if we can change our display names to whatever we want, we should be allowed to use emojis. I don’t think they should show up in chat, but they should show up on the player list and elsewhere. Zalgo shouldn’t be allowed.

IN SHORT: There are many benefits as much as there are flaws to this update and to my feedback. I understand how unrealistic my ideas are. I’ve read other people’s suggestions, and they might have a better grasp on what can be applied to fix it in the shortest time span possible, even with more realism.

We forget that Roblox is like Steam, except the majority are young children. Unless there is a perfect workaround for every problem this update might have, we might as well not release the update. That’s all.

EDIT: I would like to add that I’m neither supportive nor against this update. I just think that despite no one asking for it, it can still be useful, but it can cause a LOT of problems on the other hand.

Will this update be released to the beta program early?

ROBLOX, Has always been infested with scams, even in the early days, and there is no way to fix malicious people, It happens to alot of platforms its really sad.

Just have your friends tell you what their username was before their display name, I do it all the time when I get a name change or when they get one, this problem is easily solved.

Hopefully, Cause I’m in the beta program and I definitely wanna test this early, it seems very cool from the description they gave us about the @'s and stuff.
