people like the username snipes because it gives a unique touch to their roblox name that nobody else can have

I really like this update. But this can be used to impersonate Reputable people, if there is something in place for this, why isn’t it in the original post?
Are display names searchable on the ROBLOX site??

I’m actually pretty exited for this update but just as many other’s I’m a bit concerned about the filter behind the names you can pick. But great change non the less, really exited for this to come out!

Oh, I know… What I’m trying to say is I don’t like the idea that someone I added might decide to change their username literally every week. No, once every 7 days doesn’t equate to spamming. But if everyone keeps on changing their names I’m gonna have a hard time differentiating who is who, and eventually wipe my entire friend list.
Of course, if it’s with someone who doesn’t change their name every weekend, then that’s the best possible solution. Honestly, I don’t think this will be a problem for me, but, it can certainly pose a problem for others. Just imagine 10 of your friends constantly changing their names per week. I can tolerate it for a week or 2, but after that I’d get sick and tired of asking them over and over. Perhaps making use of the notification bar that Player1 has changed their display name to whatever, or something similar would be nice. Still, it can get quite hectic when you have to remember this name means that they’re this person, and stuff.
One way to (kinda) combat this would be to limit the no. of people who can have the exact same display name. The situation would not be 100% resolved, but impersonation can be somewhat reduced.
For example, even if people wanted to impersonate a youtuber, there could be a maximum of 100 people with the exact same combination of characters. If another person tries to change their name to it, it would say something like “Too many people have this display name. Please choose another one.”
The whole point of carefully choosing a good username is gone, now being able to change it to whatever you want.
This would defead the main points of display names though. It would make the simplies display names unusable.
The issue is that little kids may not know that. They are the most gullible crowd on this platform, and they tend to be the largest crowd.
Yeah, unfortunately. I’m already working on a system that will detect display names that may be impersonating someone.
As for the scamming, Roblox hasn’t thought that through NEARLY as much as they should’ve.
This seems like it’d be a cool idea but like many above had said this runs the risk of impersonation, not just of developers but roblox admins and more.
It wouldn’t make it “unusable”, all it will do it prevent overusage of certain popular names.

And also, ROBLOX has been plagued with scams ever since late 2008 so scammers are everywhere, and no matter how hard ROBLOX tries, they can’t stop people with malicious intent, people will just have to learn who the real display name belongs to because ROBLOX can’t control alot of these malicious people who just come to this site to scam kids out of a lego account because for some reason some grown person wants to steal kids accounts and sell them. I get your frustration but these evil people existed for as long as the internet has, and unfortunately nobody can truly stop ALL of them.

They have dealt with scams since 2008, and there still are loads on the platform today. The reality is that, Roblox doesn’t do enough to prevent & terminate scammers, and they honestly think this update will solve it.
Listen, They aren’t removing past names / Usernames In fact when you change your display name your username is your @ so if you wanted to find who the real YouTuberBillyBlox is then you could click all of the usernames with YouTuberBillyBlox as their display name and check the username @ of them.
This is true, but display names are eliminating the purpose of changing your username, since they are free.
Is that bad…? There’s people who sell accounts just to have a username

if you buy accounts or sell them, you’re getting banned if you get caught, with this update less people will buy and sell accounts, another problem accidentally solved by roblox

Their “true” usernames will still cost 1,000 Robux to change. Just look at their true usernames on their profiles. “Display Names” and “Usernames” are still two separate things.
