Say "Hello" to Display Names!

Which is still a horrible idea for people who wish to set their Display Name to a real life name (not specifically their own). Names like “Matt,” “Amanda,” etc. would all be taken within seconds. This would also make the selling of accounts appear again for a popular enough name. Plus, there would be a botting issue on Display Names by bots that mass-set their Display Names to popular words.

What? I am so confused? Wouldn’t it make the update better? People would stop selling accounts just to have usernames? DisplayNames are non unique, which is the entire reason it’s a Display Name.

That doesn’t count, by popular we mean, popular people / known people, like Flamingo, Koneko, Chloe, star creators, etc.

Actual names won’t count as popular.

I quite like this update. We’ll have to wait and see how impersonation will be dealt with, but overall this is a wonderful change.

Two possible scenarios:

1
ROBLOX: Okay we have reports of an impersonation scam bot let’s track it down.

2
ROBLOX: nonononono you have it all wrong. there are only a few bots that scam people.

To be honest, there is no way to tell which one will be the reality, just gotta watch & wait in the meantime.

I agree, however Roblox decides to layout the in-game player tabs they should definitely include the user’s actual username. The scamming problem possibility, as @DevTigerr was also talking about, most likely won’t be stopped too much by listing the user’s actual username. However, there could be another way along with the listing of the username’s that could work even more with the prevention of scamming. This idea that I am talking about is something that role play type sort of games will use sometimes, it’s very simple, in the games users can choose a name that will replace their username, if a user is to hover their mouse over another users “role-play name” it will reveal that users actual username. Usually this is just used in the chat box, but it could also be made to work with the over-head player-tags.
I’m not completely certain how this could possibly work on mobile, perhaps the user could just tap on the names in the chat box, and tap/hold on the over-head player tags. Or perhaps if game developers would like to implement it, developers could add a little dot in the middle of the screen for mobile players, and then if they hover that dot over the player tags they could see the actual users usernames, it could also be used to select or operate things in-game but that’s beyond the point.

I personally see a big issue with this update, impersonation. First of all, it is well known that there are a lot of scammers, and bots on roblox. For example, there used to be bots all over group walls posting sketchy websites to either steal your account, or have you fill out surveys, promising “Free robux” which is not the case. Now with the display name feature, all scammers or hackers have to do is change their display names and avatars to something like “mrflimflam”, “kreekcraft” etc… and little kids would obviously believe them, and they are at high risk to get scammed, or hacked. A way to fix this would be to add their username under their display name as an @ to see who it really is, so that if someone were to impersonate a popular person, it would be a dead giveaway that its not really them. For example, the layout would be
Cool Jake
@CoolJake1234
you could make their username smaller than the display name, as long as it’s still their so its obvious its not them. also in chat you should make the chat feature display names as something like
CoolJake(@CoolJake1234):

Although I like the idea, im not sure the way you guys are planning on executing it is the best way to pull off display names. Im sure you guys have already thought of impersonation, and im curious to see as to what display names are going to be like.

Will Player.Name still return the unique UserName? Reason being, since I’m using a custom leaderboard I wanna display both the DisplayName and UserName just as a small security measure (kinda like how Discord has a unique ID attached to your display name) against impersonation.

This sounds like it’s going to be problematic. That being said, I have a couple of questions.

  1. Could you have a space in your display name?

  2. Could you change the color that your name appears as in the chat box?

Yes. .DisplayName and .Name are separate.

I can answer these both off the bat.

  1. No, if you check if the name is allowed using Roblox’s API, you can see that spaces, dots, more than one underscore, stuff like that aren’t allowed on DisplayNames.
  2. No, there’s no endpoint for it.

There should be an option where you can’t allow other users to change their display name to your username.

That’d pretty much defeat the whole purpose though, if someone had the username “Jack” and someone wanted to changed their name to Jack, as well, they would not be able to. Now think if everyone enabled that feature…

At the same time, would you want someone impersonating you out of all the people?

It shouldn’t just be disabled for large YouTubers or streamers; people in the start program. There should be an option either way

Since this is a feature to change your name to anything (even if that user has the same name, it will work)

I’m afraid that if this does comes out. I’m gonna expect some trolls, impersonators (roblox admins, known devs, etc), and even more with this feature.

At least people can change their display name instead of the username for Robux

He isn’t referring to developers or more senior players on the platforms. Scams are targeted at young children who are so desperate for robux (or any good).

Another thing to think about:

Raiding.

Multiple people with the exact same display name might join a game and spamming or something like that.

I SO MUCH WISH I HAD THIS
I would love to have this feature although people will use it to impersonate popular people I’m not gonna tell my friend I may just copy his name LOL and he will be like wait whatttttttttt and also I don’t have much Robux so I would change my DISPLAY name to a better username!

It’s not disabled for only large youtubers or streamers, I am guessing they are going to pick some popular devs on the devforum or roblox who people & pop yts played their game and have lots of visits (basically all I am trying to say is that some pop devs names & roblox admins names will be filtered)
