Love this idea and also can you please some how bring back Tix or something like that?
thank you so much.
i feel like this would be a problem for developer and video star creators because they could easily get impersonated by this. i like the display name idea but there would too many people impersonating.
I disagree with this greatly. I will be programming my own custom systems from now on to bypass this system for the sole reason that I find this unnecessary, clunky, and detracting from a player’s identity. There should be an option to disable this in your game.
“just by the fact that people can set the Display Name to whatever they want and impersonate whoever they want to” - No, not whatever they want, there are limits to what display names people can have. I’m sure there’s gonna be the same filter for display names that the sign up page for usernames has. I’m also sure that they’re gonna develop a system for blocking people from doing so. At least for popular and well known people.
Here’s a suggestion towards the recently announced forthcoming “Display Names”:
- Maybe adding a ‘verified’ icon next to usernames that can be easily impersonated/used for malicious reasons.
- Also, when a “verified user” is ingame, it would be good to have the icon next to their name.
- Star creators can remain the same with the shooting star logo, but other usernames that can still be impersonated (e.g. NobleDragon, Telamon, 1x1x1x1, etc.)
- The ‘verified’ icon can look like a “Cheezit” but instead of a hole in the middle, it could be replaced with a verified check mark to express verification. + .
No I meant you can like get the option when you have like 5k-10k followers or a place with 500k-1M visits.
I disagree strongly with this system being added in. This feature’s pros are cosmetic at most and are heavily outweighed by its cons.
The biggest and most problematic of all the cons would definitely be impersonation. Now yes, I am aware of how usernames of popular users will be blocked, but this doesn’t do anything at all to give security to pretty much everyone else, who can practically be impersonated for free.
Secondly, this also brings up the issue of harassment/bullying. People could take advantage of this feature to harass a user by copying their username or by using a similar, more mock-ish toned display name (yes names with insults or swear words could be blocked, but with the filters and moderation/lack of it this could easily be bypassed). In addition, users could also band together to “raid” or “troll” in games or groups with the use of these display names.
Lastly, there is the issue of scamming. With how Roblox scams in their current form get smarter and smarter as time goes on, adding display names allows scams to be WAY more affective than they have been. Younger users and the less informed have the potential to be exploited by scammers by tricking them with display names. Admin/moderator-sounding names or bypasses to actual staff usernames could be taken advantage of, especially in these scenarios.
Instead of adding display names, I would suggest lowering the fee for changing usernames. Bring it down to a price like 200-300~ robux. It would cost less than the overpriced 1K fee but also have enough value for users to seriously consider changing their name instead of using it for impersonation, harassment, or scamming.
hahaha, no.
Tix is longgggg gone. Robux is the currency method now. I do wish tix was back though, that would me cool.
To further my explanation, here’s what DisplayNames could look like:
Keep in mind that this is only an example and could definitely be improved upon.
How to kill traffic to your games 101…
All old Games that display names will use Player.Name, and create confusion over who is who.
What I mean is that people can bypass the filters really easily, you can change the letter ‘l’ for a capital ‘i’ when setting your Display Name. So there’s a few ways to bypass the filters and that’s what I’m talking about, adding more precautions when people set a Display Name would be great.
About this ^^ Do we have to use Player.DisplayName ?? Or can we still just use Player.Name, because if 2 playes have a same displayName it will like kinda bug out.
Why would it kill traffic? My games wouldn’t benefit at all from this update, and could actually be harmed. Most of my games use artificial aliases anyways.
You don’t need to use it. They just suggest it. Its going to take too long for me to do plr.DisplayName
in all scripts so maybe I will just add both (Obviously in future updates in my games), but use an @ tag with the username.
I’ve heard youtubers hate this update but roblox fixed it already, this is for me actually a good update because i don’t like my username and i can’t change it to, but with a display name it’s much better.
If you are worried of someone changing there display name to the owners do what I do for admin panels use somebody’s User ID that way unless the person has the same ID they don’t have the admin panel.
Woo, this is very cool, and risky. People will find a way to impersonate people trust me, and for people that are known in a certain community, not to roblox, very big F for them. I personally disagree with this update, to me i see this just as a way to impersonate more less known people to roblox, but maybe big people in the trading community or smth like that
Hello, display names
I’ve been looking forward to changing my name to “Hungry” as opposed to HungryBoy02
My opinion
This is obviously a controversial feature, which is often the case with the majority of huge updates in Roblox; as long as this feature is not mandatory and can be toggled by both the Developer and user, I find no issue with it.
For front page games, I believe this feature will be very beneficial for them, in terms of being able to allow their players to choose their own identities which can be applied to in-game environments. This being said, I do think group games with management and moderation will find little use for this feature as they rely heavily on specific and unique usernames to make identifications easily - perhaps if there was a way to include both the Roblox Username and the Display Name on the leaderboard, this could be a work-around for that (sort of similar to how Discord works with Nicknames and such, but they have a unique identifier at the same time).
In summary, the benefit of this feature is, obviously, that new people joining the platform can be displayed with a name which is less determinative and judgemental and due to the fact that there are roughly 150 million (could be outdated as of now) accounts on the platform. Many new players who are struggling to find a username will resort to inputting numbers or other methods in an attempt to choose a username which best identifies themselves, but then risk being judged as a “noob” because they have numbers after their name. It is important that players can enjoy the game properly, and I believe a universal option that allows players to make this happen is a positive thing.
