I like this update! It’s great!
Yeah, if you attempt to use a star creator, popular developer, or a Roblox staffs username through the API it will moderate the display name.
No its all about the look if youre name displays a rare username there is no more need to get an actual rare username
This feature is… risky.
Besides the whole “impersonation” factor that some have said above, there’s also this issue about roleplaying, it may be used for malicious purposes. What happened to the whole “Do not use your real name” thing? Certain players might do it. I mean, it’s already a rampant thing with regular usernames, it’ll just increase.
By “malicious” purposes i mean could be the whole dating thing, if it somehow bypasses the filter, alongside other issues like personal info. Will the display names be reviewed manually by moderator(s) or by an algorithm?
So when will this come out, Lol? I’ve seen lots of people talk about it I kinda just really want to know when display names are coming out.
I think this update is great because we can have nicknames and such that we like and no longer have to waste 1000 robux on a username change or worry about a name already being taken and having to use numbers, x’s, i’s, you name it.
My only concern for this update would be identity fraud/theft/confusion and catfishing and of course people falling for scams more easily due seeing a familiar (false) name.
But other than that I like this update and I’ll be making use of this display name feature likely, I just hope there is some sort of plan for the possible upcoming identity crisis/problems that may come along with it.
I actually like this idea that the Display-Names are actually planning to be an option, I don’t mostly agree with it being only available to users with account age 13+ since people can lie about their age all the time.
What I do suggest is make it so that only people who setup emails/phone numbers in the accounts (or both, especially if they are verified) can use Display-Names to reduce the amount of trolling.
Though, I’m frightened of the update being published. I do hope that there will be effective methods to control it’s downsides.
So big developers and youtubers get better treatment yet again…
Are smaller developers (like me) just screwed? I wouldnt like someone to name themselves after me and trick people in my game.
What counts as a ‘popular developer’ anyway?
I agree with this, that could solve the impersonation issues in a convenient way.
Now, here’s a problem, some users ‘might’ get annoyed by this.
A verified icon badge near usernames (In-game) and near profiles, would solve the problem.
Here’s a reference to what I mean:
I have no idea if I’m going off topic lol (reminder: roblox is solving this the other way by filtering popular people usernames, but i still like the verified icon badge idea.)
Make a custom player tag and use player.name instead of Player.DisplayName
For display names, there should be a list of names you could add, with a search bar and a name request.
Player list would show displayName anyway
Why not make a checkbox in the user’s settings they can check if they don’t want people using their username as a display name?
I use in my NameTags
`“|”…player.DisplayName…“(@”…player.Name…“)”.therestofmycode
To everyone talking about impersonation, a Roblox is locking off certain names.
As you can see, it returns 400 (error code).
That’s cool and all, but what about everyone else? Like the average player, or a smaller up coming dev? They could still be impersonated. I can already imagine the scam bots being made to fake accounts on other’s friend lists and DM the people pretending to be their friend to trick the person into trusting the bot.
I just don’t think a white list or black list is the best option. There needs to be something that covers everyone.
Pretty sweet update but how would roblox stop impersonation?
When will this update come out? When will this update come out?
Still won’t cover impersonation for 99% of the playerbase. All this does is give more security to well-known users and admins and nobody else.
On the topic of a filter, yes, abusive names will be filtered but considering how poor the chat filter is today, it’s likely that abusive names will get bypassed almost immediately. If you wanted a display name like “nicolasdevsisstupid” you could easily find some bypass like “nicolasdevsls5tuzpid”. The same can also be done for known users by using bypasses to find ways to copy their names.
