Say "Hello" to Display Names!

Hello dev forum. If I already have display names disabled in my game should I be concerned about having to script new name tags based on display names? Thanks for reading!

Laughing Emoji,
funny.
Real belly gripper.

Is there gonna be a way to disable our display names? What if someone didn’t want their display name shown for a number of reasons?

I like the update but, how about exploiters because hackers are already a problem on roblox. I don’t want reporting hackers much harder then it is

Pretty sure this will be removed soon after release, there are a million ways to impersonate somebody even with moderation and alts will be made.

I think Roblox Should have a check or something like that on the side of the real account and nothing on the other account.

I am completely fine with this compromise.

The audience that Roblox has that is under the age of 13 are the most susceptible to being fooled by Display Names if someone were to use them for malicious intent, and USUALLY someone 13+ is smart enough to check for Usernames as well.

Display Names are already being talked about so much in Roblox “media” (YouTubers, etc.) that the majority of 13+ users already know what they are. The only issue is introducing someone who just turned 13 to Display Names. On their 13th birthday, you could do a “Happy Birthday! Now that you’re 13, here are some features that you can use.” pop-up message.

For some reason, I still have a display name. Like, it doesn’t show on my profile, it just shows “Zuki” as my overhead username inside of a game, you can like join me and you can see for yourself since my joins are on.

Surely was not long before people started using a VPN to change their location to Germany and get this feature early.

I believe you can get the player’s name by looking at the Player’s Name property. You can get the display name by doing the same thing with the DisplayName property.

With those, you can set the Humanoid’s DisplayName property to something like this:

Humanoid.DisplayName = Player.DisplayName .. " (" .. Player.Name .. ")"

@Ender1709 does this in Mortem Metallum and it works pretty well.

I have a few questions about this idea, especially about how it would impact ingame moderation. How would moderators for games be able to identify and eliminate rule breakers?

Theres this feature in Natural Disaster Survival where you can click on a player’s body and see their username, and the choice to friend them. That could be a way.

For me, we can see both display name and username in the tab list

That isn’t always available if players are simply screenshotting chat messages or are otherwise reporting players in external sources. Additionally, I think many moderation GUIs would need to be changed.

This is cool and all but I have a feeling that this could spark a ton of impersonators. They follow the same rules as usernames, no spaces, emojis, or special characters other than underlines. Roblox staff, YouTubers, rare names, and other things could be impersonated.

A filtering feature has been put in place to prevent a lot of this. Rare usernames on the other hand are pretty much doomed.

Did they remove the update or is it not available on my account yet?

Roblox would obviously have tools for Moderators in sourcing a user’s username from their displayname.
Such as the instance and time of the displayname used being linked to the username as multiple instances of the same displayname can exist, or quite simply sending the username in the report along with/omitting the displayname.

Yes, but I think that might only be available for official ROBLOX moderation. I am saying it would be difficult to identify players for in-game moderators that work for a community within ROBLOX (not official ROBLOX mods).
