Ah ok, well this would be something for game developers to implement.
Having DisplayNames even be displayed is optional to the game developer, they can display them in different ways and perhaps side by side with their username.
I’ll probably use my custom Name tags to still display their profile names since I think display names would just be annoying for my games
Also I think people could just do
player.Character.Humanoid.DisplayName = player.Name
I think there should definitely be a way to choose to block other users from setting your Username as their Display Name. For example if I did this people would be unable to make their name ‘CaptainWeetabix’. I know that it would decrease the user’s options of possible names if this was widely used, but nobody should have to worry about being impersonated. This would do more than a blacklist could possibly do.
They removed the ability to, but if you got a display name before the test got patched. It’ll be there possibly forever, from what I believe.
Honestly, I think developers should have the option to enable the humanoid’s display name to be their unique username or the display name. Many have said this and I am going to say it to. It will make banning exploiters manually extremely difficult. It will also make impersonations of developers, game staff, youtubers, and just average users unavoidable. In my opinion it causes more problems than it solves. Believe me, I like the idea of having a display name, but I think developers should have the option to disable it in their games. I have a starter character in my game, so idk how it will affect that. Overall, its a good idea, but it gives exploiters and trolls too much power.
It was removed from what I understand, but an easy way of doing what you mention would be to have a server script that waits for a humanoid to be added, then sets Humanoid.DisplayName equal to Player.Name, or if you wanted to be really sure you could disable the default chat system and craft your own that uses Player.Name instead of Humanoid.DisplayName
I agree that such a compromise sounds reasonable, but I would not agree that the majority knows. Several of my friends were completely confused when seeing my name different in-game, all of which were above the age of 13.
I don’t know what outlet Roblox should use, but they should most definitely make is absurdly obvious that this change is occurring. A change in the way that identifying who someone is, on a relatively anonymous platform, should be top priority.
They removed the Open Beta in Germany. This test allowed anyone with a German IP to change and use the display name function on the website. This open beta is now closed, and your DisplayName value most probably cannot be changed until public release.
Edit: A lot of people used a VPN in this limited time to monopolise on being able to have a free name change.
I think roblox should make it only 13+ can see display names but not under 13 because people that are 13 can know the difference but younger kids don’t.
I don’t know about that. There are alot of people who fake their account age on the site so they don’t have to deal with the <13 restrictions. It would not do much to be honest.
I disagree. I believe if there should be anything like this, it should probably be an option in settings to disable Display Names.
Not sure if anyone has proposed this yet, probably so, but if only roblox made it so the user can choose if another user can make their display name copyable. Young kids would probably not know how to do this considering the fact they will want to play games on the platform instead of getting technical, and if someone is worried about being impersonated, they can switch that setting on, and it would make it so anyone’s display name cannot be your username, because you had it before anyone else did, fair and square. Or, if Roblox really wanted to, they could make that a feature for people who have changed their username at least once, and has supported the platform. I don’t think any “verification” program is going to work out that well tbh.
This is due to the fact the Display Names were not truly released, they were only in a testing phase. I’m sure if Display Names were properly introduced with Roblox’s proper UI changes, they’d know.
I am prepared for this since my team at my studio already made a nametag that shows the players username instead of displayname. I suggest you guys do the same.
What website theme is this? It looks really nice and I would like to use it!
This feature is already being abused. My friend has set his display name to mrflimflam and it has been making people think he is actually Flamingo.
How will you be preventing impersonation of popular Roblox content creators & developers, as well as Roblox Staff?
They already have stated ( I’m going off memory ) that they are going to blacklist certain display names to prevent them from impersonating large youtubers / devs.
While checking the scripts, I found that you can edit display name settings in ChatSettings.
I don’t know if more will be added soon, but that’s all I know. You can change it to enable by replacing false with true.
module.PlayerDisplayNamesEnabled = true
Hello roblox.
Is there a rolling out date that is confermed?
Also, as a Roblox Beta Program member, shouldn’t this be rolled out to us soon?
Thank you.
