Now this is something I can get behind. The only problem, would group visits count as well? I work as a CEO of a game studio and have no interest in making any other games solo. Of course it could be botted but why bot a game just to reserve a name and possibly get banned?
I’m almost at 10k visits, so I can apply for name lock soon that nobody will impersonate me with the display name, I’m actually at 8.9k visits
Also I’m a small youtuber
PLEASE allow for spaces, dots, underscores, and more unicode characters to be allowed! Myself and many others would love for the freedom of this. I feel as if this would cause more creativity for names than the basic username criteria being enforced on Display Names as well.
As far as I know, this shouldn’t break anything at all. The only situation of Display Names with special characters unrestricted breaking something I can think of is the possibility of ruining some TextLabel/TextBox etc. fonts for characters that are unsupported within the fonts. You can’t reference a Player instance by their DisplayName property using scripts, so there should be no scripting issues with allowing special characters as well.
I think anyone who doesn’t want to be impersonated should be able to apply for a name lock. It’s crazy that just because someone isn’t “famous” means that they can be impersonated.
People would apply to lock popular names, like real people names. This would literally just cause for Display Names to suffer the same fate as the already-existing usernames… so many of them being taken.
If you make the restriction high enough then it won’t mean all names would be name locked. Say 10k you-tube subs or 10k+ MAU. 10k Visits was an example. Visits could be good but 10k is a little low. There should be some sort of dev/user verification or name locking feature so we know the real user.
There should be reasoning behind what name is locked and what isn’t. If the name is too “general,” as in a real life name, it shouldn’t be locked, because, for example, there are other people out there named Matt. Don’t lock general names like “Green,” “Matt,” etc. but usernames that are totally unique like “mrflimflam” should be locked.
