We’re excited to announce we’ve launched semantic search for your model inventory within Studio Toolbox, making it easier for you to find models in your private inventory!
Last year, we announced semantic search in Creator Store as part of some major improvements to the Search and Discovery experience. However, we know that developers still struggled to find assets within their private inventories whose search relied on matching search terms with asset names alone. For their own inventories, Creators often use names based on projects or non-descriptive words and when inventories can contain thousands of assets this can become a real challenge!
With semantic search you can now find models in your inventory without needing to remember exactly what you called them. Instead, you just describe the asset and it will show up in the results. Additionally, semantic search better supports long queries, queries with additional visual details, and multilingual queries.
You can see an example of what finding your shoes is like without and with semantic search.
Before
After
We’ve started with semantic search for just models within inventory, but stay tuned as we will be extending this functionality to other asset types in your inventory later this year.
Please let us know about your experience finding what you are looking for in Studio Toolbox and if you have any suggestions on ways to improve it.
FAQ
How does semantic search work?
Rather than just matching search terms with asset names, semantic search understands the intent behind your query to find assets that match its meaning.
Can I still find my models based on their asset names?
Yes, you can still find your models by searching for asset names.
So uhh, is there ever gonna be a fix for a lot of models in my inventory not showing up in the toolbox? Because that’s been a problem for a long while. (I haven’t checked if that fix came with this update)
But still, it’s gonna be nice finding things easier in my inventory
Oh, you have no idea how frustrated I was when I had to scroll through 750+ items in my inventory three times only to find that the item I was looking for wasn’t even in there.
Holy crap, this will be extremely beneficial.
Thank you so much to everyone who helped make this.
Can text filtering be removed from the search bar already? I type in something like “ghost” and it turns it into ##### and returns no results. Idk how its even blocking the word for me since I can say it in game chat just fine!
Imagine this with sound effects. Quite often when searching up a sound I get a ton of results that arent even related to what I searched for, although not sure if that could be do to Audio Privacy update.
Most likely. It uses an algorithm for sure. How Anupam Singh (VP Engineering, growth at Roblox) describes semantic search, in a podcast, is that there’s a connection to ML (machine learning).
does this work on audios? because whenever I search up sfx I’m usually treated with the unpleasant library of roblox uploaded sounds instead of what I was looking for
Yep, it is made possible by matching the words you are searching for with machine learning embeddings based that include information about the content of the models themselves, rather than just relying on a match with the text of the asset name.
