Reason to fix: Item is a full on copy of the iconic Ghostface Mask from the movie Scream, Copyright Owners of the Ghostface mask has sued because of the mask’s design in the past
Reason: Item is directly copied off Judge Fear’s Helmet from the Comic Book titled 2000 AD, Rebellion Developments (Current Copyright Holder for 2000 AD) also has previously sent lawsuits for copyright reasons.
Not really a bug. If someone believes that content on the platform infringes their rights, they can issue a DMCA notice under US law. Submitting a bug report for each alleged infringement is not something expected in this category and cannot be used to resolve legal issues.
i mean they did fix this, and it’s posted in catalog bug reports, i don’t think there’s anything wrong with posting it in bug reports when its related to Roblox and could potentially get them sued (also i’m not the copyright holder to any of the sources of these items, and i’m just a normal roblox user)
These cases (Shriek, Knight of the Stygian Abyss/Violet Abyss, Eggfection, and Extinct Egg of Dino On Ice) are not bugs, and that’s why they don’t belong in Bug Reports. A “bug” would mean something like broken functionality, glitches, or technical errors in how an item works in the catalog or game engine.
What’s being raised here are intellectual property/copyright infringement concerns tied to specific catalog assets. Each case you listed (Ghostface mask copy, Judge Fear helmet copy, stolen DeviantArt design, Yoshi egg copy) involves design ownership and potential copyright violations, not technical defects.
These items do not copy or identically resemble other forms of media, they are transformative in their own right and shouldn’t be changed.
All of these are transformative, also Master Chef and Mario Fan are just words being used as their title, the items themselves are random and have nothing to do with a franchise.
This absolutely doesn’t belong here, but none of the first items are transformative enough to be protected if the IP holders cared or had the ability to fight for them. I couldn’t make the first video game recreation of The Matrix and claim it is transformative because the medium is different; that’s not how it works.
This is irrelevant and completely on Roblox for infringing on somebodies copyright, Roblox would be liable to reimburse the owners. I think this thread is a bit ridiculous, and I even used to own the Knight helmets, but making the notion that it is unfounded or incorrect is misleading. It’s pretty blatantly obvious that these items are in violation of copyright.
Most of the lawsuits you’ve provided in this thread either lost, such as the Scream and Knight lawsuit which was regarding the title of a product, and the other provided documentation from Nintendo, only one actually relates to the Yoshi egg design, and was a settlement and has literally nothing to do with copyright. It was regarding a health code violation after consumers were being exposed to lead.
I understand that, which is why I pointed it out as I feel like it doesn’t really help your argument. I do agree these items do violate Copyright but some better sources should be used.
If I were you, I’d make the inclusion of the Hockey Mask, that was an item that was entirely redone because of Copyright issues, and would serve as a great example to back up your point.
should’ve included that, but now that you mentioned it in the dev forum post, it’s a great point tho, i also do like how the new hockey mask looks (minus some weird positioning with the mask)
To be fair, with this item in question the texture was scanned and ripped directly from a licensed halloween mask of Jason Voorhees, so It’s a slightly different situation.
I think some of you have a bit too much time on your hands. If these items are deemed infringing, then the respective owners will reach out to Roblox. It is also not uncommon for some of these IP owners to have already reached prior agreements with Roblox regarding their IP, and these agreements usually aren’t public, especially if the items are 15+ years old and haven’t been modified.
If theres issues with items and you feel necessary to bring them up, then I’d personally recommend reaching out to the IP owners instead of making a devforum bug report.
I have to agree 100% with this message and some of these items are very big and notable items like Knight of the Stygian Abyss - Roblox for example
Knight of the Stygian Abyss - Roblox Last sold for 2M Robux which was only a month ago, huge changes to these legacy hats that are coming up on 15 years old is both catastrophic for the item (hockey mask is a good example) as well as unfair to the people who pay such a large sum of money or give it in trades to obtain the item and should be left untouched.
