Hey, let’s stop arguing about badges and go make games!
The fact that people think RBXDev makes you trustworthy is the first problem. Being in RBXDev doesn’t make someone legitimate suddenly.
Twitter does this because like @NoahWillCode said “To make sure that its operated by that entity” while ROBLOX is where almost 100% that entity started so its uneeded. (Unless its some famous developer outside of roblox, but its only happened once so its not relevant right now)
you all act like having the badge will solve scamming problems. but it could do the exact opposite. The person with a badge could scam more easily with the badge since users believe that it somehow means they are trustworthy.
And again like @NoahWillCode already said forever ago, Staff and moderators have badges because THOSE are the people you are suppose to go to with issues. Not devforum members that get selected by work you have done. You are NOT selected if you are trustworthy or not.
i support the badge because it will make more people want to sign up!! i want the devforum to be bustling with activity!!
I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or not…
Personality is a big factor in RBXDev nominations and acceptance, but I still wouldn’t want people going around with an RBXDev badge acting like they’re invincible.
It’s an unfortunate truth that the dev forums are seen as a status symbol. Those of us on the inside know better, but to the outsiders, it’s a magical world behind a thick veil out of which only rumors come. “Wow, you must have to be pretty good to get in there,” those on the outside find themselves wondering; “I can’t imagine Roblox would keep someone in that exclusive community if they didn’t absolutely obey the rules,” they may think to themselves.
The issue here isn’t a matter of what RBXDev is, rather a matter of what the average Roblox member (who knows of RBXDev) thinks RBXDev is. As Echo pointed out, RBXDev members do have status outside of these forums just for being in them, and it’s not even something that’s advertised. When someone finds out you’re in an exclusive, invite-only community, they’re more susceptible to blindly trusting you. After all, RBXDev is intentionally secretive.
I’ve seen RBXDev used as a status before to scam users - someone who wasn’t even in RBXDev was going around saying he was and using that to get users to think he was more trustworthy or had some status outside of these forums because of it.
I’ve had users come to me asking, “is this guy in RBXDev he’s doing a deal with me,” to which I always reply that they can check themselves whether or not the person is a member (and do give them their answer just in case), and tell them that regardless of status they should never perform trades that aren’t sanctioned by Roblox.
The fact of the matter is that whether we want it to be or not, RBXDev is a status symbol among those Roblox users who actually know of its existence. Whether or not we deserve badges for it is obviously a point of interesting debate - both sides have pretty strong merit.
I think that the deciding factor in this debate would be whether or not RBXDev should be a status symbol, and this is something determined by Roblox. Not RBXDev. The next step would then be to decide what to do about it. Frankly, I don’t think it’s a big enough issue to warrant much change at all. After doing some reflecting upon the issue, I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t really mind either way whether we get RBXDev badges. Frankly, they’re inconsequential to me. I do know, however, that I would be very upset if I found out a user was abusing such a badge to scam users or boost their ego. RBXDev is a resource and not really a bragging right. I wouldn’t be upset just because I hold you all in high regards and think of each of your actions on these forums as my responsibility in a way, I would be fundamentally upset as a user of these forums myself because such actions would reflect poorly upon myself and all other members, and even Roblox just for inviting such a person.
Imagine yourself in a situation where RBXDev users do have profile badges or a verified check mark and suddenly RbxDevUser666 starts using it to scam users by making them trust him, and posting things on the forums like “i’m better than you because i’m rbxdev lmao” - it would reflect badly upon all of us even after this user is removed from the forums (which I assure you they would be).
So yeah, to summarize my inane ranting, I think it would do more harm than good to have RBXDev profile badges and I don’t support the idea. I don’t want some snobby edgelord punk getting on here and making us all look like asses. It’s up to Roblox to determine how they want to handle RBXDev’s status - and my opinion is “do nothing.” It really is fine the way it is.
My hope one day is not to get some special badge, but to have this forum open to everybody.
That will be the day the forums dies, unless of course it is kept read only. The regular forums are a “cancer” of their own as it is.
It might be manageable if we could flag posts or something like that and once they got enough flags their account was frozen so they couldn’t post until the issue was reviewed and they could either resume posting or they where banned from posting. Also, if you’re able to see who flagged and they where wrongly flagged then punishing the people who flag posts with malicious intentions. Not sure this would completely work but since there aren’t too many people who frequent here besides us members there hopefully wouldn’t be too much of an in-rush and legitimate budding devs could start to participate.
EDIT: I was thinking of a public section to this forum in this case, though I agree that at least some of the forum should remain private to members only.
Can we just lock this thread. Badges won’t, and shouldn’t, happen.
Edit: sorry, ignore the above statement
Why lock it? The discussion has been pretty constructive so far.
If the thread is locked I want to add my two-cents.
Badges were made for the intention of giving recognition to people who make significant achievements, from excellence in battle to attracting a gaming audience; even inviting people to roblox - this is here to make people good for hitting achievements.
I think my admission to RbxDev was an achievement in itself - being able to see everything behind the lines and get information first, being considered worthy of that feels good. If I had a badge to show that, I wouldn’t mind at all.
Realistically people targetting RbxDev users for their badge is a silly concept; a lot of people won’t even notice it unless directed to it. And miss-identifying the badge as a status symbol on behalf of the ROBLOX staff would be impossible because all badges have a very well clarified description.
I wouldn’t mind at all; I don’t think impersonation of an rbxdev member is a problem because it brings no authority; but showing your achievements is the idea of a “badge”.
What if DevForum members could link their DevForum account (if they are an actual user with posting privileges) to their Roblox profile like Twitter/YouTube/etc?
Not really a badge or an honor, just showing that it’s there. Nowhere near the admin badges or anything like that either. No implications of authority, only making it easier for even new users to verify information users could already see if they took the time.
I think calling for a thread lock is the least constructive idea in this thread. Trying to force your opinion on others is not the right way forward. I’m not saying I agree with the badge idea, my opinion has changed over time admittedly but I still would like to hear any arguments for or against it that may remain.
As for opening these forums as a whole, that is completely ludicrous in my opinion. Bigger developers would feel less inclined to be here as they would be swarmed, right now that doesn’t happen because most of us are mature and constructive in this community. However, I do agree with @EndorsedModel that the current Public section should be changed to an Announcement section and maybe a new Public section opened where users can post and communicate with our community.
I apologize. Wasn’t trying to force my opinion. I understand the different sides and just can’t see it happening. However, calling for a lock was not the right way to go about that.
I agree with that, I can’t see a real reason for it to happen. @Emporerj’s idea is probably the best one here.
Not sure whether this would be a bad idea or not, but it would work.
Devforum members can add their profile to their roblox profile through the social page on settings. It could come up as a button, like this:
Just my 2c.
I have always believed that the dev forums should be open to everyone eventually and I hope roblox believes this as well, and this just seems the opposite direction for that.
I feel like instead of badges, we should open the forums and have some form of point system to allow users to see the updates section after so many points and to be allowed to start threads. Find a way to restrict new users, but still allow them to discuss in topics and view them.
As much as I would like that, I feel like the quality of the forums would drop significantly. If we open it to everyone, it would require a stricter moderation team and more moderators. The ROBLOX forums already has that. I feel that would punish us, because then we are going to be set on stricter rules than what we have now.
I think what makes this community great is the restrictive access. We don’t have those random trolls that come on just to cause problems. Everyone here are remotely friendly to each other. Any arguments are generally handled and worked out.
If anything, I would think access to this forums would be more flexible. You’d still have to be approved, but the requirements are a little loose. It will allow newer developers to get in, but keep those random trolls out.
And I like the idea of a point system. Newer developers can get accepted in at a low rank, and as they post and gain reputation, they eventually “level up” and gain access to different categories, eventually becoming a full member.
To add onto @TigerCode’s post I think you’re really underestimating how low quality and garbage the forums are. It’s often that attention seekers who post poor quality, off topic, and sometimes provocative forum posts. I’ve been on the Clans & Guilds forum (alongside others) and I can fully attest to how terrible those forums are.
And honestly, I’d rather not run into leaked child pornographic photos left and right on this side of the website (unfortunately this happens more often than it should on the main forums).
And the lounge here isn’t?
You people act like its not possible, but there are ways I feel we could make it way less restrictive. I never said “Lets open the forums and anyone can post or comment or create threads” TigerCode basically repeated what I said but better.
