Spammy "Friend Message Popups"

There has been a new Roblox feature recently added, which is very distracting when trying to concentrate. Each time a friend sends me a message, I’m getting an in-game popup, even in Studio. Yes, this also applies to game invites, but this is much more distracting as it is frequent. Imagine having a conversation with 20 in-game popups.

This seems to have been added yesterday. There also seem to be new setting options, but they are broken, clicking on the toggle does nothing (check image).

It is one of the rare instances where a Roblox feature disrupts workflow by causing massive distractions/UI overlap, depending on how many interactions a developer has with the community/friends. It causes me to quit my flow or close five popups, and not leave people hanging. (e.g. 20 Popups, questions / suggestions that I can’t just read later “leave on read”, once I have time)

→ I also literally have to tell my friends to not write me as much, as they are distracting me now, because of this feature
→ before some Tests I usually have to click “X” on like 5-10 texts for 30 seconds before being able to test

Expected behavior

You should not be getting friend messages / game invites mid studio, while trying to concentrate.

It should be opt-out or not appearing in studio at all.

I would also suggest the following with this:

  • It would be great if I could close the Friend Chat feature completely even on the website (without a popup/ blinking when someone writes), as I sometimes have to keep messages on “read”, while configuring game settings / testing stuff

Hi @sayer80 ,

Thanks for the feedback! The screenshot you posted is for push notifications so if you disable that it’ll prevent you from receiving push notifications on your mobile device. Unfortunately, we do not have a setting for chat toast notifications at this time but is something we’re actively looking into right now.

For app scenarios, you can “snooze” these chat toasts by either:

  1. Clicking on the snooze button (the bell icon) on the right side of the chat message toast
    image
  2. Going into an experience and opening in-experience app chat then hitting the snooze button

You’ll have options to snooze the chat toasts and in an upcoming version I’ve added a snooze “Until I turn it back on” option as well.

For studio, I agree this is probably distracting and undesirable for developers. I’ve gone ahead and disabled chat toasts in its entirety while you’re in studio
