Studio should not attempt to create a desktop shortcut every time it updates

It’s literally been almost 5 years with no answers on this, I find it absurd that this is even an issue in the first place. Why hasn’t this been fixed?

3 years and it’s still a problem

yeah, i really hate it because i like my desktop uncluttered. so, i zoom in my desktop to allow only a few icons fit but every update the roblox logo keeps appearing. disgusting.

Oh, I’m just totally convinced this behavior is intentional, especially considering it’s a four-year-old bug that keeps pestering you to play the game. And if you even think about deleting it, well, it magically reappears with every update!

This is not intentional, I asked some Studio engineer in person at some point and it’s a limitation of the way they register the application with the operating system. It’s because Studio is actually two applications, a bootstrapper that also handles updating, that then dynamically updates the actual Studio application. It’s tough to solve while also supporting a self-updating installation like they do currently.

Similar to it being added to the desktop, it should not be added to the dock as well on macOS.

Well, it’s actually quite intriguing how other apps with a bootstrapper and main app combination don’t seem to encounter this particular issue. It’s not as if there isn’t a solution available (ahem ahem, the Windows Registry).

I’m not going to pretend I know more about the Studio app than the Studio engineers themselves. These are pretty smart folks, so if it hasn’t been implemented yet, it’s likely because the opportunity cost of fixing this over working on other things that benefit creators is too high.

I made a small program in Rust that runs in the background and removes them. You can drag it in the Startup programs. Enjoy!

Get it here:

Hello from 2024. Still an issue. I have a ton of Roblox studio shortcuts in my trash bin. I’ve also noticed that if you put it in a folder, it’ll still create a shortcut on the desktop even if the folder is already on the desktop.

Yeah, it tends to happen every time it’s moved, not just when it’s removed. So if you have a separate folder specifically for development, a new shortcut will be created regardless.

Can we please get this already? How has this been lacking for all this time?

I have no desktop icons besides recycle bin - I do not want Roblox reproducing itself on my desktop every update…

I know a simple fix that can help with this problem.

Right click your wallpaper, go to View and uncheck Show Desktop icons.

This will make your computer have all the icons invisible, I haven’t got a single idea on how to do it with the recycle bin, but I think this is the only solution.

Well now you have the ROBLOX shortcuts hidden, good job.

NOTE: This doesn’t delete the shortcut so you still don’t have free space from deleting it.

EDIT: Sorry I said it wrong, it’s just a workaround.

Wouldn’t call this a fix, more of an flawed workaround.

Solution

I actually found an actual solution instead of just hiding every single item in the desktop. All you have to do it right click ROBLOX, click Properties, go to General and turn on “Hidden”.

Now do it on ROBLOX Studio too and go to File Explorer, View and turn this setting off.

Now you can have it hidden forever, you can also put files in the place it was made too like it doesn’t even exist.

One more thing, do not delete the ROBLOX files, I mean you can’t because they also won’t show up in the Desktop in File Explorer too.

Edit: Idk why but this doesn’t work or maybe that’s just me.

Please allow studio to be pinned to the start menu. My workflow uses the desktop and so I have to type “Stu” into the start menu search every day :sob:

If only Roblox Studio updates itself instead of redownloading a new version instead…

Or it does, I believe. It does pin to the Taskbar and stay there, but the Start menu is another question. Odd.

They’re both just links to the executable location. No idea why it recreates it but it’d probably a check which is more “if there is no icon then remake one”, not “if there is no icon and we previously made one”.

Please, I really dislike having Roblox place icons against my will, it’s almost like if I don’t have any control over my own computer.
